Re: OT: Finale and backing up a new machine

Audio Engine failed to load. Please restart Finale. Error Code 7. I get that error quite a lot (usually after the laptop has gone to sleep), and after pressing OK (often several times), it just carries on regardless. If it doesn't work, then you may be able to get Finale running just by ensuring th...

Re: OT: Finale and backing up a new machine

Naturally, I've not tried to install Finale on it, as it's running Sequoia 15.5. Finale runs perfectly well on Sequoia. I haven't tried running the installer on Sequoia, but I don't think there have been reports of problems. My question is - what are people doing with their older, FInale-dedicated ...

Re: Lyric height baseline and height adjustment not working properly

Dorico's new versions are usually every 2 years, and $99. A Sibelius subscription is $199 every year, by comparison. The list of new features and improvements in version 6 took me 6000 words to outline in the Scoring Notes article. Of course, you don't have to upgrade; though when you do start using...

Re: Lyric height baseline and height adjustment not working properly

After importing the file and opening it in .musx with, say 10 voice staves, the lyrics are nicely positioned under the notes in the first staff, somewhat lower in the next staff down, a good bit lower in the third staff down, and so on until at the bottom they're nearly off the page. I suspect that...

Re: .musicxml vs .mxl

Dorico often warns that you don't have a particular style of a font, e.g. if something is asking to be in Italic for a font that doesn't have an Italic. If something is set to be in Helsinki Bold, or Italic, (being a music font), then Dorico will flag that. Dorico's result does look pretty good, and...

Re: .musicxml vs .mxl

Since Dorico does a lot of hand-holding and auto-correcting it could be that it ignored whatever the Sibelius MusicXML file said about fonts and point sizes and that's why it looked better In Dorico, you can choose whether or not to import text style data from XML, or whether Dorico will use its ex...

There is now another update (1.981), which fixes some issues with CFX instruments. Hurrah for the continuing development of software!

Re: Graphic shifts in PDF.

I also seem to remember that there was a problem with particular types of TIFFs (saved using LZW compression)...! It's possible that re-saving the TIFF removed the compression. (It was used years ago to reduce file sizes, but nowadays that's not a problem.) Whether it's that issue causing this probl...

Re: Any way to print top halves of multi-page piece?

Some PDF software may offer "Tiling" in the print menu, which is basically printing a large page as 'tiles' of smaller sheets. Alternatively, printing to "100% Scale" will ensure that you get a cropped image at full size. The trick will then be to see if you can adjust the orientation to get the bot...

Re: Graphic shifts in PDF.

However, I'd like to ask: is this a known problem? There have been issues from time to time with images moving if you used Page Spread View, vertically. Because the first page is a single page shifted to the right-hand side, images would 'stay where they were', further to the left. You say it was O...

Re: Mac OS Tahoe

It surprises me that something like clicking buttons quits working from Apple update to Apple update. I can't think of any reason not to make such things upwardly compatible except laziness. Or maybe it's a marketing philosophy to make you keep buying new software. Of course, it's possible that the...

Re: Mac OS Tahoe

My understanding from Apple is that Rosetta 2 will still be there in macOS 27 but will disappear after that, so it’s not going away for a bit. Apologies: you're absolutely right. Apple often uses "deprecates" to mean both "removed" and "advised against" in their Dev Release Notes, which is why I am...

Re: Mac OS Tahoe

Actually, a few problems have been reported with Finale on Tahoe. Some of the buttons don't work when you click on them: e.g. the Stop button in the Transport; some Cancel and OK buttons in some dialogs. Under some circumstances, menu items can gray out and be unavailable. Key presses, like Enter fo...

Re: Is this a solution for the demise of Finale?

You can carry on using Finale on an old machine for years, but you need to be prepared for it to suddenly stop working at any time. Your current hardware could fail, and a new machine might require a new OS that isn't compatible. (Even a future build of W11.) I would make sure you have XML files and...

Re: Piano Sustain Pedal

What instrument are you using? Garritan/ARIA? At the very least, CC64 should trigger the pedal (assuming you're using the 'Notation' bank of instruments, not the "Standard" banks found in some Garritan libraries.) ButI would have thought that if you've added a Pedal mark, then HP should deal with it.

ARIA Engine update !!

Some users will know that when MakeMusic ported ARIA Player to Apple Silicon on the Mac, they changed the version number to 2.0xx. However, they left Windows users on 1.959. (Although both are actually the same codebase.) The ARIA engine always checks that the data it loads (e.g. saved VST plug-in s...

Are you looking for a platform where you can sell your arrangements, or where you can buy arrangements? MuseScore.com is basically the 2000 lb gorilla in the marketplace, as they have bought Hal Leonard, so the rights are already covered. You can download all kinds of arrangements of all kinds of mu...

Re: Comparing files opened in different versions of Finale

The first thing you should do is to make a PDF of your finished version in Finale. Firstly, that means that you can print copies regardless of Finale or Dorico. A PDF will also be ideal for comparing the original while you're working in Dorico. I'd advise learning how Dorico works BEFORE attempting ...

Re: Finale with 5K Monitor?

My memory could be wrong, but I think the issues with resolution have been on Windows. On Mac, the OS handles the screen scaling, so there's not much that the application needs to be responsible for. (In fact, you haven't been able to set an application to be "low-res" for several years.) In short: ...

I decided to try a full reset: uninstall Finale and then reinstall it. That seems to have worked. But I still don't know how some setting got changed that cut off playback..... If it's a settings issue, then Uninstalling and Reinstalling is a massively unnecessary waste of time and effort. (And not...

To be brutally honest, there is absolutely no point in paying money to learn Finale now. If you're going to spend time and money learning and using notation software, then realistically you should choose either Dorico or MuseScore.

Re: Mac Sequoia: any known problems with F 27?

You should be able to access phone text messages on the Mac's Messages.app. There is also a Whatsapp Mac app (if you're into that) on the App Store, which syncs with your phone.

Anyway, glad you're up and running.
