Re: help entering score (time/space issues)

Firstly, disable automatic measure spacing and use the Measure Tool to manually adjust the length. You might be able to create the graphics as an articulation, expression or in the Custom Line Tool. Do you want playback to work?

Re: Is it possible to "attach" chords so they stay put?

I lock the staff systems in every work, since the auto spacing, for me, creates a number of issues, such as the one you experienced...grace note spacing and other annoying matter. It seems only occasionally do I need to lengthen or truncate a measure that takes only a second with the Measure tool. I...

Re: Is it possible to "attach" chords so they stay put?

Did you customize any of the chord settings, are you using the same library file, and does the problem occur is all documents? Try locking the staff systems in Utilities.

Re: portamento

Regarding the difference between glissando and portamento, I spoke with a professor of music at the Newcastle conservatorium of music, also with another at the University of Tasmania, in Hobart. Then I read all the assertions on the topic at The Vienna Symphonic Library. There seems to be no clear c...

Re: portamento

Taking a second look at the OP, I get the impression that the composer is trying to abbreviate the phrase, perhaps to simplify reading. If I wanted to ensure this particular section is played as later described, I would write the individual notes, except for the larger interval, where I would use gl...

Re: portamento

If Finale honored slurs in playback then we could compare the sound with what we wrote and correct any discrepancies. I was taught to write what I hear; but such practice often results in unnecessary clutter and difficult-to-read passages. In an imperfect world, some credit for intelligence is best ...

Re: portamento

IMHO, you would add a gliss. mark between each note for playback, since a true port. is not possible on piano (unless played at blinding speed). The slur terminating on Db indicates that the gliss ends smoothly. In the second instance, the Db is played at the end of the sequence (to me the use of th...

Re: Windows 10 - Sound Too Low in Playback

There are at least two settings in Windows that regulate output volume: one is in the Control Panel and the other in your soundcard software. If both are boosted above "normal" then the Finale output will be affected.

Re: Finale vs Audacity

Another option is to use a quantizer plug-in to synchronize the waveforms. You can do it manually with the TimeStretch tool in Audacity, but that is very time-consuming. Yet another option is to use a DAW with quantization for synchrony, or use a watered-down version just for the synchronization the...

Re: Windows 10 - Sound Too Low in Playback

In the sound settings of Windows, you can boost playback volume; it is in the same place where the microphone sensitivity can be boosted. In Finale, I set the lead instrument in the mixer to 127. In VST, the master vol. can go up to 200 without clipping. If using ARIA player as the device, I always ...

Re: Can we enter a pedal mark for both staves?

If I recall correctly, I experienced the same issue of not being able to start a new thread, many moons ago.

Keep participating. It did not take long before I was able to post my first question. Then again, I might be confusing forums.

Re: Pitch Bend/Glissando/Etc.

 I too am interested in learning if a pitch bend is controllable. The most common issue for me is a bend not reaching the pitch of the subsequent note. I often have to write a separate score for playback with incorrect notation for correct playback of a bend. There might be a setting esconced ...

Re: Customizing duration of sforzando

Aha! I see that playback is set to "None," otherwise subsequent notation is affected. I had assigned a key velocity to mine, so that the sffz would be distinguished when added after a part in "f." I'll just create some as articulations that apply playback only to the note or chord. Thanks for lendin...

Re: Play-back issue

I experience this problem often. Below is what I do. 1. If my score is simple, click on MIDI/Audio -> Reassign Playback Sounds. 2. If my score is complex, I either change the device of the problematic instrument in Score Manager, from Garritan to SmartMusic or vice-versa, playback a few measures the...

Customizing duration of sforzando

I understand sfz to apply only to the note or chord where written, interpreting the mark to mean suddenly louder than what precedes it and what follows; so I treat sfz much like an accent. But Finale regards it as a dynamic expression with playback continued with the increased velocity, until anothe...

Re: Can we enter a pedal mark for both staves?

RSV Lee, you have fully understood my situation; and yes, I would not care about sustain when auditing notation in a particular staff. Miker, I carefully read my posts again and just cannot see where I even intimated that I wanted to add pedal marking under the treble staff. I had considered adding ...

Re: Can we enter a pedal mark for both staves?

Did you mute staff #2 in the mixer then play back staff #1? For me, the pedal marks apply only to staff #2 in Motet's example. Attached is a document I created, using the Setup Wizard. The same issue appears: the pedal marks apply only to staff #2. If I want the marks to apply to both staffs, I must...

Re: Can we enter a pedal mark for both staves?

This is surreal. One would think MakeMusic engineers would consult a musician before developing software for an instrument. Pianists that use Finale must be very tolerant people. When you say, "Try putting both staves on the same MIDI channel," do you mean in the "Instrument List" of Score Manager? ...

Re: Can we enter a pedal mark for both staves?

Gould also asserts that pedal marks are placed below the F Clef, and I follow this convention. But pressing down on the sustain or release pedals on my piano and electronic keyboard always affect all the keys. So if in playback I want notes in both clefs to sustain/release, I need to enter marks for...

Re: Playback Issues in Pre-2014.5 Finale

I once resolved an issue in Finale by uninstalling a Windows update. Three weeks later, I reinstalled the Win update and all was well. Upon direction by MakeMusic, I also had to reinstall a Finale update--twice--before solving a problem. I now delay Microsoft updates 30 days, since too often, MS rel...

Can we enter a pedal mark for both staves?

Is there a way to write pedal and release markings that affect playback in both staves, without duplication? For instance, if I enter a sustain and release mark in the G clef, I don't want to enter the same markings in the F clef then hide them.
