Re: Help with Sibelius Conversions/Note Performer

Have you tried exporting a document in XML format then opening it in Finale, wherein you can then save it as a *MUSX file? Articulations and expressions get scattered but at least the file is converted, and you can edit the scattered articulations. Back up the document before attempting file convers...

How to EQ Garritan Acoustic guitar?

Has anyone found good EQ settings for the Garritan Acoustic guitar sound, so that it does not sound muddy? I analyzed the frequencies and found that the 100Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz and 600Hz dominate. I know the 400Hz band is the "dull" frequency and that perceived loudness is not determined by the amplitud...

Re: Corrupt Files

I had issues converting .MUS files to .MUSX. What worked for me was was firstly exporting them as *.MusicXML files then saving them to MUSX in the new version of Finale. The procedure scattered the fingering, articulations and custom lines, and took several weeks to correct as I have many files; but...

Re: Are these known bugs?, am I doing something wrong?

If the issues you describe do not appear in a fresh document then the document is probably corrupted. In such case, I create a new document with the same key, measures, etc. then (after clearing the MIDI Data) copy and paste the music from the corrupt document into the new. To date, this approach ha...

Re: Fingering articulation plays back as a mordent

Peter, I thought you were showing me another method of transposing the playback pitch of an instrument, without altering the key signature or notation. You had already kindly showed me how to figure out the Interval and Key Alteration. Thanks for your patience.

Re: Need help transposing pitch without altering the key

Can you tell me where I can find the "{Staff Transposition}" tool that lets me keep the notation unaltered but play back in a different pitch, such as one semitone higher? I selected the staff -> Staff tool -> Utilities -> Transpose -> selected "Up" -> Other -> selected the Interval as 1. The playba...

Re: Need help transposing pitch without altering the key

Yes, calculating the steps in this procedure had my head spinning. But such cogitation is good for the brain as it promotes dendritic sprouting in the cortical region of the brain, and it slows neuronal pruning that comes with age. If I click on the "Display in Concert Pitch" icon, the score gets tr...

Re: Fingering articulation plays back as a mordent

Yes. HP is the culprit. Looking at my notes, I see that I experienced this problem before. Peter's suggestion to edit the 'character' and make it a 'shape' works. I used Bookman Old Style, Light Italic 10pt to more-or-less match the other fingering in Maestro Times. Unfortunately, editing the positi...

Re: no play

When you say that you "installed a headset and microphone," do you mean you connected headphones with a microphone to the audio jack on your computer? Click on "MIDI/Audio) in the upper text menu, point to "Device Setup," select "Audio Setup." Post a picture of that appears in the window that pops up.

Fingering articulation plays back as a mordent

I created an articulation "m" as a fingering indication. When I attach the "m" to a note, Finale plays back the note as a mordent. In "Articulation Designer," I set the "Playback Effect" as "None." But the note still plays back as an ornament. It seems that the articulation I created works as a macr...

Re: Need help transposing pitch without altering the key

Peter, you are gifted! Your calculation works. Thank you sooooo much. Yes, the guitar is written one octave above concert pitch; and Finale automatically assigns the pitch when a G-clef is selected for the instrument. But when writing for guitar with use of a capo in an ensemble, the staff must be s...

Re: Expression Selection Dialogue Box opens reduced every time

Try closing the document, exiting Finale then re-opening the document. If the problem persists but does not appear in a new document then it is corrupted. Finale is a wonderful program but very unstable: the more I edit a document, the probability of running into the issue you describe multiplies. T...

Re: volume

Another option is to assign the instrument to its own bank (in Score Manager) and raise the volume of the instrument in "VST Banks & Effects," which lets you increase the volume to 200. If the Bank is below 100, you can simply drag the slider up to 100. If the instrument of one Garritan's, you can g...

Need help transposing pitch without altering the key

I am able to assign an independent key signature to a guitar part with capo on the 2nd fret, so that the notation is in C major but the concert pitch is preserved, playing back a major 2nd higher (D major). I firstly use the Key Signature tool to transpose the guitar track up to D major then in Scor...

Re: Can we write text on top of a placed image?

Thanks for the creative ideas: I will keep them in mind for future projects. The image I have is for the cover, 8.5" x 13" and placed on a blank page; so, without a staff, I cannot attach a pic or add an expression/shape. PaintShop Pro let me add text to the PNG file. Thanks again for the valuable i...

I always save the distributable copy in PDF format. But I don't have an app like Adobe Illustrator to enter text in the PDF file. I managed to create text in Corel PaintShop Pro and past it on top of the existing image.

Re: Capo Chords & chord names

Do you want to write a guitar part in, say, the key of A Major with capo on CIII but have Finale play the notes in concert pitch, which in this case would be C Major? I have a method that permits this configuration. The chord diagrams also appear in A Major. The key signature of other instruments in...

Re: How do I get a grand staff for marimba and still pick all the nonpitched perc for later sections?

In Score Manager, select an instrument with the staff system you want (Instrument drop-down menu); then from the Device drop-down menu, choose Garritan, SmartMusic or a plug-in you might have installed. From the Sound drop-down menu, choose any instrument you want. If you expand the system in the Na...
