Layer 3 Controller data not sending in Finale 26

I am not sure if this issue is specific to Finale 26. It seems that the latest update to 26.1 actually overwrote my copy of Finale 25.5, so I don't really have a way to check. I use Vienna Ensemble Pro hosting mainly VSL instruments for playback. I use controller 1 for dynamics (using VSL's "velocit...

Re: Best practice for wind parts in large orch piece

This makes sense - and basically conforms to what I've been doing - was just hoping maybe there was a better way!!

Best practice for wind parts in large orch piece

Greetings, Been using Finale for 28 years or so now, but still haven't conquered this one and I wonder what the collective wisdom can offer. I am writing an orchestral fanfare for large orchestra - winds are in 3s. As is traditional, I want to have my Fl 1+2, Ob 1+2 etc. on one staff in the score (i...

Re: secondary beam default settings?

Thanks both of you - sounds like a pretty complete answer. Yes, I noticed Dorico did it right from the start - weird that Finale hasn’t ever fixed this, but glad to know the proper workarounds now.

secondary beam default settings?

Here's a thing that's driven me crazy about Finale for many years, and it occurs to me (and has often occurred to me) that I must be missing a basic preference toggle somewhere. If I write, in a single quarter note beat, 2 sixteenths and then a 16th note triplet, Finale defaults to beam them all tog...

That worked!

So weird - this really has nothing to do with quantization, but thank you!!

rests in compound meters

This is a question to which I, as a 26-year Finale user should know the answer but...

Is there a way to make finale default to dotted quarter rests in compound meters such as 6/8 and 9/8, rather than rest plus quarter?

If not, is there a quick way to change these in batch?

Thanks!

setting up two-line bongo staff

I am having some trouble getting my two-line bongo staff to look correctly. I've got it so my notes are appearing in the right places, but the clef and the time signature are too low, and the time sig is oddly spaced. Not sure how to proceed. I am attaching two graphics - one to show you what the st...

some keyboard shortcuts suddenly stopped working

Not sure what's happening. A lot of my meta-tools have stopped working, including very basic ones (like pushing numbers for dynamics, or holding down S w/ the smart sharp tool selected to create a slur). The keyboard in general is working, and other pre-programmed tools work (like the keyboard short...

Tempo changes don't work when viewing staff sets

Am I the only one who experiences this?

In Finale 25.5, if I'm viewing a staff set in scroll view, my tempo changes don't play back.

If I view all staves, tempo changes work as expected.

Percussion Midi Maps xml files

Greetings I am moving Finale to a new computer. I've got everything working, but I can't seem to copy over the percussion midi map xml files. Even if I navigate, on the new computer, to the networked drive of my old computer, and get to the MIDI Device Annotation Folder, I do not see all xml files f...

Re: Dorico, Finale, and crystal balls

I finally bought Dorico when 2.0 came out. I've spent a bunch of hours over the last week starting to learn it. Finale is fine, and I can do everything I need in it. But formatting a large orchestral opera score, and all of the parts, was so, so much work. Finale lets you customize absolutely everyt...

Can I insert images into my score?

I'm surprised I haven't had to deal with this before.

Writing a piece for solo bass clarinet, and I want to insert fingering images as PNGs (or some other file format).

Is there a way to do this within Finale, or do I have to go graphic?

Re: Is there a way to temporarily disable hairpin playback?

Hi Zuill and Djard, I am not fully following, I think. First - I always use smartshapes to enter hairpins, is this not standard? I suppose I could enter as an expression, but I haven't tried that yet. Also, I use almost all VSL instruments. I have their velocity xfade on, and assigned to controller ...

Re: Is there a way to temporarily disable hairpin playback?

Thanks, Just to be clear, I DO want the hairpins to play, but I'd like also to be able to override the ones that aren't performing correctly. I do notice that I can place hidden dynamics that help matters. I don't want a separate playback and print file for this particular project (14 scenes of an o...

Is there a way to temporarily disable hairpin playback?

Greetings, I know you can turn human playback on and off with expressions, but I've discovered that that does not affect hairpin playback. I would like to be able to temporarily disable hairpin playback, so I can enter in my own controller-based scaling (i.e. to make dynamic changes more or less dra...

Re: Some thoughts and questions about Note Velocity

Ah you're right. That DOES affect the velocities shown when you look with the midi tool. So BOTH of these settings, play a role in what velocity is actually played? Maybe it's just important for them to be set to the same number, so that inputted velocities actually match the desired result. Still g...

Re: Some thoughts and questions about Note Velocity

Nope. In Human Playback Preferences, in the Dynamics/Volume Tab. There's a setting for: Base Velocity. It defaults to 80, which seems a decent place for it to be (64 would be very soft). But if you look w/ the midi tool, even with the base velocity set at 80, it shows all velocities at 64. So the re...

Some thoughts and questions about Note Velocity

I notice that when you look with the midi tool, Finale sets all velocities to 64 as a default. However, my HP preferences have 80 set as their base velocity. It seems that if I create a midi file with Standard Human playback, the velocities get somewhat randomized, but hover around 80 (when I look a...

Re: Saving Human Playback Preferences

Yes. That solved it. I guess having it attached to the first file made it so that that HP prefs set didn't update? Strange. I WOULD like to keep it attached, so that every time I open the file those prefs are there, but I guess I can live without doing that. Seems like there should be an option to b...

Re: Saving Human Playback Preferences

Just to clarify, I haven't lost a set of preferences - they still exist on the file for which I made them. But I'm finding that while the NAME of that set of preferences is available to me in the new file (not actually a new file, but one I'm editing), the content is totally different. I DO have "at...

Re: Saving Human Playback Preferences

I haven't reported it yet - I thought maybe there was something I was missing. There doesn't seem to be a way to actually save a Preferences set. You can hit "Apply," and you can save the overall Finale file.

Outside of that, I guess I'm not missing anything and should file a claim?
