Re: Disassociated handles

Thanks, Perotinus. I am indeed working in Page View with multiple pages. But I need to work in Page View with multiple pages, so I will try switching to another style and back to see what happens next time it happens.

Thanks, Anders, I may try that.

Re: Disassociated handles

"It" happened again today and I tried all of the suggestions above. None worked (except Peter's regarding the text block, which I tried yesterday, but decided I preferred to stay in the editing frame on the page.) The file opened and the dynamics jumped around crazily when I tried to edit them. Swit...

Re: Disassociated handles

Didn't happen today, wouldn't you know it. Thanks, BuonTempi, I thought that it might have to do with opening a file too soon before Finale is completely open. But I just tried that and there was no problem when I clicked on the file immediately after starting Finale. Anders, I use a template that w...

Re: Disassociated handles

Thanks, Anders. No, I didn't know about the measure numbers; or if I did, I forgot it long ago. That is another one to try. You would think I would have tried scrolling, but I couldn't swear to it. Now I am actually looking forward to it happening so I can try all the suggestions! But it only seems ...

Re: Disassociated handles

Thanks, Peter. I will try that. Motet, I don't ever have handles persist so you may be right about the platform. And I am using 25.5 so my articulations are stacked the old fashioned way. Other ideas about the original issue? Hope it isn't my relatively new Mac. I haven't seen anything like it with ...

Re: Disassociated handles

Hi Mike, great idea. I need to try that next time it happens. I have also noticed similar disassociation issues with text blocks. All of sudden the cursor doesn't appear where I click in the block but somewhere outside of it. Yet the editing proceeds as if the cursor were where it would be expected....

Re: Disassociated handles

There are no artifacts or anything like that. These are the legitimate articulation handles that are all in the wrong place on the screen when the file first opens. the handles don't go where they belong until I close and then reopen the file:

Disassociated handles

Sometimes when I open a 25.5 file for the first time, it looks like this:

Closing it and opening restores it to normal. Anyone else experiencing this and/or know what is going on?

Re: a strange bit of voice-leading

I agree with Anders. However, I can imagine some preferring a more "normal" look, since the voice leading is clear in spite of the change of stem direction:

Re: trill tie

If you want the final G sharp distinctly played on the first beat of the last measure, don't tie it to the previous trilled G sharp. if you want an amorphous conclusion to the trill, the tie might be a good way to get that point across. And actually what you wrote in your OP was fine. But you could ...

Re: Hairpins crossing systems - A Lament

Thanks, Anders. Yes, new notations will be accepted or discarded according to the same evolutionary process as before, by common agreement. But reinventing the wheel will never succeed in an art form that is so reliant on a universally-accepted notational language.

Re: Hairpins crossing systems - A Lament

I am not trying to pile on, RVS Lee, but I am in complete agreement with the previous comments and do urge you to follow what has been standard practice for two centuries. Our notational system in all its many details represents the collective wisdom of many musicians and engravers over many years a...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

Must be user error. At least, I've never seen this in many years of using FInale. I can't imagine how else one can enter a slur other than what N Grossingink describes. The slur doesn't appear unless you double click on a note and it automatically attaches to the next note, or one of the following, ...

Re: Hairpins crossing systems - A Lament

Don't think there is, and there probably should be a setting for that and others too for hairpins. But what Finale does is pretty standard, at least according to examples in Gould and my experience. But I'm curious about your special preferences. An illustration?

Re: Space before mid-measure clef

I've dealt with this one for years, David, and have found no solution but to re-space the whole measure for every occurrence. it's more obvious when the music is widely spaced. One of those things that makes one look longingly at other software.

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

I mostly use the beat chart, but also need the Note Position tool at times. Experience has shown that for my editing work, which stays very close to the composer's manuscript, fingering is best applied as an articulation.

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

The problem is that expressions don't attach to notes. This is fine for finger numbers that fall between notes, like those for turns, and I used to use expressions for those, but not for most finger numbers. I've found that the JW Change plugin offers several features for adjusting the position of f...

Re: whole note in 7/8 bar

A better keyboard shortcut might be a dotted half note without a following eighth rest, especially since many keyboard players might shorten the note a little anyway. And it will fit in the measure.

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

Thanks, Motet. I meant that I can't set the articulations to "above note", "below note" or any of the other options, because of the complexity of the fingering, which is sometimes over the notes in various positions, sometimes under the notes in various positions, sometimes next to the beam, sometim...

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

motet, I do use metatools for fingering, but I can't rely on any of the default positional settings because the fingering I insert is too complex, so they are all set to manual. I tried expressions for fingering quite a while ago, but ran into issues that escape me now. I may try that approach again...

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

Thank you for your patient explanation, jan. I am not looking for anything detectable or automatic, but simply the ability to align the finger numbers as I wish on command by selecting them in groups. I thought that Perfect Layout might possibly have some relevance, and it may, as you mentioned, hel...

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

I am not familiar with stacking in Finale 26 since I use Finale 25.5. But I need to be able to select any group of finger numbers and perform a horizontal and/or vertical alignment without this affecting any of the other articulations. For example, one can do horizontal alignment of smart shapes lik...

Re: Perfect Layout free update v1.2 released (more than 80 improvements and new features)

Jan, I would like to be able to easily align a horizontal series of finger numbers that I select. Also to align stacks vertically. There is a plugin to do some of this, but it is cumbersome. I was thinking that since Perfect Layout can avoid collisions between articulations, there might be a mechani...
