Re: Notation question about using sfp within a dynamic context

I think that yang wants a percussive attack and immediate drop off, which is what one gets on every note on a piano. sfpp or even sfppp without the accent marks should do it.

Re: Freezes

Thanks, David. I, on the other hand, never have crashes, just freezes and quite a few of them.

Freezes

I get occasional freezes in which Finale 25.5 (Mac) is totally unresponsive and can only be Force Quit at the Apple icon. It happens only after I select a whole measure very quickly in the middle of some other editing process. I haven't been able to isolate anything else that leads up to it yet. Won...

Re: Music spacing at page turns

This doesn't answer your question, but such a wide multi-measure rest measure looks unattractive to me. I, personally, would redo the layout of the two pages to avoid it.

Re: New Version of SmartScore?

Thank you, Mike. I didn't expect that you would take the time to actually edit it! Nice job. That's what I do too, just the notes. And ebiggs1, that is a great example of the power of music scanning and how far SmartScore has come. It's miles better than what I got with SmartScore 10.2.4 when I scan...

Re: New Version of SmartScore?

What a kind offer, Mike. Here is one. Just a page or two would probably be sufficient:

Re: New Version of SmartScore?

Thanks, Mike. My needs are the same as yours except it's mostly piano music. Fewer errors would probably make it worth while. It might make even more or a difference to me since I'm currently using version 10.2. And thanks, motet and ebiggs1. As you say, the SmartScore direct to Finale thing was jus...

New Version of SmartScore?

Anyone using the new version of SmartScore? Has the OCR improved? Thinking about upgrading.

I do understand that it doesn't load directly into Finale any more, but in my experience the older version of SmartScore only loads into versions of Finale that have SmartScore Lite installed.

Re: Any good books re: placement of divisi rests

Hi Hector, I think your desire to get this right is laudable. Various good editions past and present show that there does seem to be concensus. But I'm not exactly sure what that is and do it entirely by eye. As RVS Lee suggested, you might pose this question at notat.io. It is a really good one and...

Re: Ped. symbol

Thanks, Anders. I think you are right. I may start a thread on pedaling over at Notat.io. Actually, there is a previous thread at https://notat.io/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=75&sid=0bbce2f8ec52db00759c53486d41a3c3 There is another benefit or having two completely different systems of pedal marks. In Urtext...

Re: Ped. symbol

I can't see that it really matters exactly where the instruction indicates the pedal to be depressed. As I tried to say before, all experienced pianists take most pedal instructions merely as a suggestion. I tried to answer that in my last post, Anders. In educational editions one is showing less e...

Re: Ped. symbol

Anders, I am not completely sure where the pedal is actually depressed in your last example. On the first note or on second note? And suppose one wanted to show that the pedal is depressed between the two notes? That's my issue with text as opposed to a simple line to start the bracket: it lacks pre...

Re: Ped. symbol

Thanks, RVSL. That's an interesting point. Could you post an example or a url? Another possibility occurred to me later. If the composer uses brackets above and below the staves to show something special, then some other form of bracket pedal notation might be necessary. In that case I think a P in ...

Re: Ped. symbol

I agree with your first statement, Anders, although it is hard for me to imagine a case where the text-bracket system would be preferable to the all-bracket system. But not with the second. I think that utility, clarity and simplicity should decide matters of music notation, not fashion. The thought...

Re: Ped. symbol

Hi Anders. Like you, I was pointing out the advantages of the all-bracket system over the the text-bracket system and that it works for any kind of pedaling including fractional without explanation. It is widely used in the US but less elsewhere apparently, because Elaine Gould didn't even mention i...

Re: Ped. symbol

I think that the all-bracket system is best for intricate pedaling where the exact start for each pedal mark is important and there are many such indications in a row. Such exactitude is not possible when text rather than a line starts the bracket. pedal example.jpeg A small fraction can be placed i...

Re: Ped. symbol

Yes, the FInale default position is standard. I hope you are not going to combine the Ped. symbol with a bracket. For me, that is the worst possible pedal system because it clutters up the music so much more than the simple Ped * without the increase in accuracy possible with all-bracket pedal notat...

Re: Question on symbol

Now, the OP needs to put us out of our misery and tell us if there is a footnote or other explanatory note to which the asterisk refers. I would love to know if my original guess was correct: the grace note should be played simultaneously with the chord and then released quickly.

Re: Question on symbol

Were it a kind of asterisk, which is a good guess, one would think the OP would have seen the footnote at the bottom of the page. So perhaps there is an explanatory note that is being missed or was not supplied to the OP.

Re: Question on symbol

Just a guess. Since it appears to be a jazz arrangement, it could be the arranger's way of indicating a grace note that is to be played simultaneously with the chord and then released quickly.

Same strange behavior here. Maybe input a dotted quarter note and then a dotted quarter rest each time the situation occurs?

Re: Is it notation standard for the pedal on/off symbols to not follow a horizontal line?

The Ped. without a * is the way some have indicated overlapping pedal while still using the old system. It's interesting that Chopin never hit on this way of showing overlapping pedal and this has created many issues. The few times he uses a Ped. without an * it means other things. After the first C...
