Re: Odd Visual When Opening

I also saw some strange large blanked-out areas (such as seen in your example) on opening Finale 25 documents in Finale 27. They would disappear on the first edit or operation. But I never saw an enlarged glyph like that. It must be unique to Finale 27. Other more problematic things keep me editing ...

I started seeing them a few days ago. Figured it was a necessary evil to keep the forum running.

Re: Export Manuscript Texture Setting to PDF????

Thanks, Wess. Interesting. On my desktop monitor, the evenly spaced parallel lines of the paper grain compete with the staff lines. The effect is anything but restful on my eyes. But maybe the effect disappears in a different environment.

Wess, is that pattern only for demonstration purposes? I hope that it is not actually being requested. It is both disturbing and distracting.

Re: Note mover tool

Regarding the notation of the passage. The way the notes are positioned on the staves shows the division between the hands while also showing the collective rhythm more clearly than if rests were used. It looks correct to me. But the positioning of a dotted value in the middle of a beat is usually b...

Re: simple but baffled

In case it makes you feel any better, musicus,I used to have to painfully "figure out" page numbering in Finale every time I did it, which was fortunately infrequent, because page numbers were included in my main template. Way over-complicated and unclear.

Re: "Legacy" Articulations

The short answer is "No", if you have used only simple automatically-placed articulations like staccatos, accents etc. But if you have used manually-placed articulations, like the complex fingering that I use in my editions, the answer is "None of the Above." Both ways make a hash out of the articul...

Re: Finale 27.4 is here

Better late than never for the font and triplet thingies. But unfortunately, they didn't fix the main reason I can't use Finale 27 for old files. The articulations (fingering mainly) are still moved out of position if one choses to retain the original manual positioning. And the finger substitutions...

Re: Dorico?

I never used the provided metronome or an assigned key as the beat source. Using the pedal, it is easy to even slow down or speed up the beat as convenient, and it will still be accurate if the notes are played fairly steadily between the beats.

Re: Dorico?

I never used it for notating an improvisation, just for inputting composed music, so that could be the difference. And I would do each hand or voice separately with the sustaining pedal as the beat source. Under these conditions, it is very accurate rhythmically if one plays in time against the beat...

Re: Dorico?

Does Dorico's version of Hyperscribe work better than Finale's? The problem is that we don't play the keyboard absolutely metronomically. I could see software ("AI"?) trying to accommodate for that, though. Never had problems with Finale's quantization in Hyperscribe. Haven't tried Dorico's yet but...

Re: typeset small notes

Sorry, definitely easier to use the change note size Utility to change the note size as suggested. However, if they are all beamed together as in your example, you can click on one (stem or beam, not note head), and the resize tool will resize all of them at once. The original has all the left hand ...

Re: typeset small notes

You enter them as regular large notes first. You will have to count them up and make them a tuplet, in this case x number of 16ths in the time of 12. Then select the notes that you want to make smaller and use the resize tool to reduce their size.

Re: Keyboard Maestro?

I've used KM for several years and found it to work pretty well for keyboard commands in Finale, Mike. That's all I do in it actually. As you said, it's a pretty complicated program. You might need this macro that I found online for KM to find Finale again after leaving it for another application: M...

That's interesting, David. Actually, I've not had the impression that she is adamant, just hard-pressed to squeeze everything in; so a lot of provisos probably got lost on the cutting room floor. It is a shame, however, that the many corrections like yours that she must have received are not going t...

Re: Extra barlines before repeats

Behind Bars tries to define Music Engraving with pure right and wrong when describing a lot of content. I don't think it's good. Well said. Gould was (is?) a music editor and editors want to nail everything down in black and white; the born adversaries of composers, who want to express themselves f...

I vote Traditonal. This is not a good look:

Bad look.png

Never saw the "Gould system" until the advent of computer engraving. Perhaps it is easier to program. Dorico can't do the traditional automatically either and requires a rather complex workaround.

Re: Would you do anything?

That's just what ledger lines do on a high second. If you don't like the look of it, you could put the final chord under an octave sign. There is a setting for shortening ledger lines, but it is project-wide and would effect all the ledger lines.
