Re: Should I get Finale 26?

That's too tiny to read.

I've never had a problem with blank pages, etc.

Re: Should I get Finale 26?

The problem about the expressions not being note-attached is that if you nudge them they can jump from beat to beat, bar to bar or even staff to staff. After generating the parts I frequently discover odd expressions in the wrong system or even in the wrong part! This didn't happen if they were not...

Re: Finale v.25 and Mac OS Catalina

I was at the Macworld conference in Boston where Finale debuted (1988?) and I remember chatting with the developer there. Windows at that time was version 1.0 or 2.0 and was very crude compared to the Mac. PCs also had 16-bit processors, which had limited memory, compared to the Mac's 32-bit process...

Re: Text block snafu

I reported this and they acknowledged it today. In confirming something for them I also noticed that all the other text handles on the page disappear when the bug manifests itself. The MM guy pointed out that Ctrl-U brings them back.

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

I guess it depends on the shape, whether it's something that you'd adjust or something that's always a fixed size. I think this would be better implemented by having whether to duplicate it or not be an attribute of the shape or its assignment. It seems odd to tie that to whether it was applied with...

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

If you apply it without a metatool, I take it it's not duplicated but rather shared? You can probably avoid the metatool with a keyboard macro or script.

Re: Should I get Finale 26?

Yes, I still have version 2005b installed and it seems to work with Windows 10, but I only use it occasionally to make a minor fix here or there so there could be problems I'm not aware of. But it reads and writes files and plays back. I don't miss note-attached expressions--expressions and notes ar...

Re: Replacing rests with notes

Tapped the left arrow again, to set the cursor to the left of the rest. Ah, therein lies the secret. Except after tapping left again, it moves to the previous measure, so you have to then move right; only then is the cursor to the left of the rest. The dotted quarter rest is somewhat unfortunate, a...

Re: Replacing rests with notes

That seems to work for MIDI entry but not mouse or QWERTY: with the mouse, an eighth note replaces the half rest entirely and the rest of the measure shifts right. With QWERTY entry, it enters a half note instead of an eighth.

Re: Adjusting playback volume for piano left/right hands

Finale is very complicated and it can certainly be hard to know where to begin, but once someone has given you pointers like they did above, I think that would be the time to explore the manual and understand what's going in in the Score Manager.

Re: layout problem – horizontal accidental position layer 2

I always advocate giving each instrument its own staff for the parts, then combining them into a separate staff for the score. This eliminates issues with cues and the bugs surrounding part voicing.

Re: Replacing rests with notes

I strongly suspect my picture above illustrates what he's complaining about. He wants Finale to behave like pencil and eraser, which is not unreasonable, but it just isn't so.

Re: Replacing rests with notes

My interpretation of what he's saying is that if you start with this 0704.png then go to replace the half note with four eighths, you get this after entering the first half note. 0703.png He would like B-C-D-E to stay beamed at the end of the measure, with a hole to fill in where the half note used ...

Re: Replacing rests with notes

That's right--if you delete a note or rest, the following notes will shift left and possible rebeam. When you've inserted enough notes to replace what was deleted, things should usually right themselves, but I can envision situations where you might have to redo manual beam breaks you may have made ...

Re: Replacing rests with notes

To the purpose of changing a rest into a note--isn't that what you were asking?

Read up on the repitch tool. The way it works is you select the tool first, then click on notes or rests to change them.

Re: portamento

When you quote someone and then respond to them, type your response outside the <quote></quote> tags. Otherwise, you can't tell the quoter from the quotee. If you want to respond to only part of it, edit out the chaff.

Re: Won't hide cautionary clef

It turns out that, rather than a cautionary clef, there was a clef change on beat 4.999 (of a 4/4 bar), so it looked like a cautionary, and that's why the staff style was able to hide it. I don't know how this happened. I had selected the measures in the clef tool and pressed 3 to change from bass t...

Re: portamento

That's interesting. Would you say that this is different, or less common? What you wrote is different, because the D (treble clef) would be articulated. Starting the slur on the previous note and putting the legato line only on the first note would be closer. But if you wanted the slurs to match in...
