Re: No Sound Issue
Agree it's probably not the document. Check MIDI Thru before contacting MM.

Re: No Sound Issue
MIDI/Audio->Device Setup->MIDI Thru
is where you control the sound you get when inputting notes. "Smart" should give you the sound of the instrument being entered.

Re: 4 measures per staff on Score with hidden measures
Use "Collapse," not "Cut-away," and put the first four measures on their own system.

Ah, very good.
Or you can use "s" (spaces) as a suffix.Peter Thomsen wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 6:28 amWhen you use this option it is useful to know that

Re: extending beams over rests for selection only
That's what I did above, changing the notehead to a blank and putting the rest in another layer. But with a rest as the notehead, you're constrained where you want the rest to appear vertically.

Re: extending beams over rests for selection only
Here's another idea: use an eighth rest for the notehead. I don't know how to shorten the stem, though. The Stem Length tool shortens it from the wrong end!

Re: extending beams over rests for selection only
The "stemlet" can be done, but it's a whole lot of trouble. Here there's actually a blank notehead where the stemlet is (an E). The eighth rest is supplied in layer 2 with others hidden beneath the first two notes. Probably not worth it!

Re: Clicking on a chord symbol inside a measure often selects the measure
I don't use chords, but do you mean the chord symbol is on the staff lines? When I try it, you need to click right on the name (in red here) in order to select it; otherwise, it selects the measure.
Do you have an example?

Re: extending beams over rests for selection only
It's unclear what you want to do--extend primary (eighth) beams over rests? Secondary (16th and smaller)? Do you want the beam hanging out over a trailing rest, or only rests between notes? There is a discussion here that may or may not pertain: https://www.finaleforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=15117 Be s...

Re: page and measure numbers
The default document has page numbers. Maybe you should use that as a model. The page numbers start on page 2, as is customary, so create a default document, add 100 measures, and have a look.

Re: No Sound Issue
It seems very likely that something on the computer changed rather than the file--Audio settings are not per-file--but it's worth a try, I guess.

Contextual menu works for me, too, so I don't know what the difference is. I'm happy to learn about that way of hiding, though!

Re: Hide Staff not working
I was able to hide percussion on pages 9-11 by selecting those measures of that staff in the Staff tool and using Hide Empty Staves on the Staff menu. How are you trying to do it?

Re: JW Staff Polyphony suddenly not working
I wonder if the dialog window is completely off the screen. Look in C:\Users\Jsc101\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale 27 substituting your Windows user name for Jsc101. AppData might be hidden, so you'll need to select it in AppData and unclick Hide Selected Items on the ribbon. In the Finale 27 fold...

There are also myriad settings in Finale to experiment with.
Sometimes Finale is mysteriously silent when I launch it, and simply quitting and restarting fixes it, or perhaps rebooting, so we're dealing with fragile and imperfect software, I think.

Re: Artificial Intelligence to convert flat pdf's to MusicXML
The current AI stuff in the news has to do with mining huge quantities of text posted on the internet for information and language patterns. I'm not sure how useful that is to music recognition. I do think that software can eventually replace music engravers. There's been progress there (e.g. Finale...

That doesn't fix it for me. But select the bars in question (whole stack) and press Ctrl+5 (apply beat spacing) and that seems to work.

Looks like you've added a blank page at the end, which is what's causing it. Delete that first (same menu) and then Redefine.

Re: Writing a book of short piano pieces - separate Finale files or one file?
I find as I go along I add expressions, articulations, make Document settings, page formatting, etc. If everything is together, then all pieces automatically benefit from that. If they're separate, then you have the chore of making the same changes in many places. As far as my worry about too many m...

Re: Writing a book of short piano pieces - separate Finale files or one file?
I don't know that there's a right and wrong answer, but I guess I might do one file. I don't see a reason to split it up, and having everything in one place would likely be more convenient. Assuming you want to show measure numbers, you'll need a measure number region for each piece. Is there a limi...
