MIDI keyboard key loud by definition

Unrelated to Finale, but totally annoying within Finale, is the fact that one key (a♭', but I think that's immaterial) of my touch sensitive M-Audio KeyRig is loud (and I mean: LOUD) by definition. I don't use the keyboard for performing (public or private), just for entering notes in Finale, but th...

Re: Viola solo playback not in tune

I could imagine a MIDI pitch bend on the note I inserted at the moment this problem arose. Suppose I touched that wheel accidentally when inserting notes. Not sure how that could have happened, but suppose. But how could that affect the entire stave from measure one on? I was almost one hundred meas...

Re: Viola solo playback not in tune

Erasing MIDI data had no effect whatsoever. So I finally did create a new stave for the viola and manually entered all notes. I hesitated to copy and paste, because I might copy the problem along. The new stave behaves as it should, so I deleted the old one and so far everything is back to normal. I...

Viola solo playback not in tune

I'm pretty sure I have read something similar on here, but I can't find it. So forgive me for possibly doubling an already presented problem. I've been working on a file for a few weeks now and until today there was no problem with playback whatsoever. All of a sudden to day the viola plays back a f...

Re: Troubles with Garritan

Usually it's sufficient to repeat the dynamic setting of the start of the passage right before where the audible diminuendo starts. You can hide the when marking you don't want it visible in the score. Human playback will have the start of the last (two) note(s) at the same volume as the start of th...

Re: Pizz doesn't switch to Arco

I regularly struggle with the same problem. There are two things you can do that very often (but not always) help (but not solve the underlying, as of yet unknown issue): Check the piece for incomplete or overfilled measures (Plug-ins>Note, Beam and Rest Editing>Check Region for Durations…). When th...

Re: Smart shapes not too smart

Forgot to mention that, sorry, but I had tried that as well: changing HP setup to 'standard', 'none', whatever, no difference. The file should play though as it uses standard GIfF sounds (bassoon solo, 2x violin section and viola section.)

Smart shapes not too smart

Quite often Finale decides to not play back smart shapes as it supposed to do. Well, frankly, Finale quite often decides not to play articulations (accents notably) or expressions (pizzicato and arco mostly) either, but that's for a next time. In this case Finale refuses to play the diminuendos (see...

Option-click on the Glissando tool. A window will open in which you can choose what your glissando line should look like. Not sure how a ritardando line got in there, but simply choose (or create) a different one.

Re: Fermata on default whole rest

Let me rephrase it: whether it is or is not convention to write a breve rest for a whole measure rest in anything above 4/2, cq. 8/4, I think it's a dumb convention that needs to be abolished asap. And if I would happen to be the first one (but I'm not) to abolish this convention, so be it. There is...

Re: Fermata on default whole rest

Yes, I did read the discussion, but as I said, I can't find any text book or score that confirms this. I strongly disagree with Gould and Ross (not the only thing on which I disagree with them) and see no reason why a breve rest should be used for a single measure full rest of whatever length. And I...

Re: Fermata on default whole rest

Thanks for your input, miker and motet. Placing an expression above the default whole rest is what I'm doing now, as said near the end of my post. The positioning and break a multimeasure rest options though are very welcome, motet — thanks. Hadn't thought of them. Only set back indeed is the fact t...

Re: Why are expressions not note attached?

If expressions and smart shapes were actually attached to notes, it should not throw anything off. Whether that note remains in the original measure or is moved to a next measure (because of the rebar cq. change of note duration), the expression/smart shape would still be attached to that particular...

Re: Fermata on default whole rest

Apply to any measure or measure stack the "Change to Real Whole Rests" plug-in and then apply the articulation Fermata wherever you want, and it's centered on the rest (also in the parts). At least that's how it works for me. I'll do that. Thanks for the suggestion. Downside is, all these measures ...

Re: Fermata on default whole rest

Thank you for your response. Yes, that's what I initially did and it works for one single measure on one stave (as I had hoped to having described properly, sorry for failing), but that is not copiable. In an orchestral work with lots of individual parts and many fermatas that's a horror to even thi...

Fermata on default whole rest

I thought i had asked this before, but I can't find it on here; might have been on the old MM forum. Situation is: I have an 4/2 time signature and need to place fermatas over empty measures. Finale will not allow me to simply enter a whole rest and pretend the measure is complete; Finale will add t...

Why are expressions not note attached?

Wouldn't it make more sense, or rather: wouldn't it only make sense if expressions (and smart shapes when set to be note attached) were actually note attached instead of beat attached? They may seem to be note attached, that is: when you place them, they visibly attach to notes, but when you do, say...

Re: Finale graphic absent from PDF

Jay, If you can play that chord with 1, 2, 4, 5 and have "small" hands, I wish I had your stretch between 2 and 4. I have average hands and can span a 10th on the white keys, but can only play the chord with the thumb on the bottom two notes. And I always thought myself unlucky for only spanning a ...

Re: Finale graphic absent from PDF

For what it's worth: when exporting pages as a pdf from within the graphics tool, on my system Finale never places the graphics correctly on the page or even doesn't show them at all. Relaunching Finale makes no difference. Creating the pdf through a printing command will have the graphics in the co...

Re: Finale-Can-Do-Anything Department

All the more a pity Finale so miserably fails at performing the simplest tasks. Try this: enter the tuplet without the 16th and allow Finale to complete the measure with rests. Never seizes to bewilder me, those wonders of 'computing'. And then copy that tuplet and paste it onto other measures or st...

It stands indeed for the alternative bowing, as boldest06 demonstrates. "Opp." is rarely used. More commonly used are "ossia" or "ovvero" (ovv.)
