Re: Finale reason for being

congratulations. I had a very similar experience a few months ago, where my "Hymne" for strings was performed in a concert for Ukraine. A doctor, visiting from Ukraine, came to see me after the concert and told me how much it meant to her, and how surprised she was to hear composers from so far away...

I don't know what is nightmarish about the last one you list.
Once you understand how the feature for moving notes/bars from one system to the next works, it's actually quite simple.

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

It is not my intent to enlighten anyone. The fact you all still use Finale is proof enough. so you're just going to make all-encompassing sweeping statements about Finale's capabilities and then not justify them at all? the fact that we all use Finale isn't proof of anything. it's simply demonstrat...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

yes, cutaway scores is one thing Dorico doesn't do... yet. It's coming, it's been asked for many times by many Dorico users. And the devs have heard the calls, and responded. what type of staff style changes? as for the "funky" shape manipulations, I did ask to see a list that would directly affect ...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

Bottom line still is, none of those programs can do what Finale can do. You keep saying that, but you haven't said what it is that only Finale can do. And there is plenty that those apps can do with one click, which in Finale are time-consuming fiddly manual labour. Flat, S-shaped, or segmented slu...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

The solution seems so simple if MuseScore, Dorico, Sibelius, Lilypond are so much better why not just switch and be done with it. ebiggs: be honest. if you could prepare your orchestral score, then spend 5 minutes with each part just making sure that your page turns are in the right place, wouldn't...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

I've always been an ardent defender of Finale. If you've read any of my posts in the past you will know this. however, I made the "mistake" of trying out a competitor's product that happened to include a significant portion of my "Finale wish list" features. If MakeMusic assured me that these featur...

I'm not sure.
I'd have to go back and check. we're talking about 50 some pages of music.

Re: Finale lifeboat

in my case, there was a good 20 minutes of music left when it started deleting noteheads and everything. deleting tuplets was most definitely not a possibility, either. (which is why I opted to simply learn how to use Dorico on the fly, by re-entering the entire concerto by hand.) And yes, I'm assum...

Re: Finale lifeboat

for now, from what I've read after posting about an issue I had with XML import into Dorico, D. seems to have some issues with longer files I think. I imported the XML of my violin concerto, and about halfway through the 2nd movement noteheads started disappearing, leaving only beams, dynamics, some...

the thing is, I'm not talking about the people on this forum when I talk about my experience. I'm talking about the students and staff at the university here (I can only speak from experience about 1 out of the 4). I also speak from experience talking with the composers I know, internationally. Ther...

"...doesn't address a single concern of the company's oldest users" You don't get any older "user" than me. The fact remains and is, most or even all the bugs some of you "oldest" users see, do not hampen most users old or young. Finale has almost run perfectly for what I do and I suspect I am fair...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

So in other words, if some MakeMusic employee writes a "blog post" that is nothing more than corporate jargon marketing gobbeldygook that says nothing and doesn't address a single concern of the company's oldest users, we have to cut them some slack because we might hurt their feelings?

I don't know if I'm alone in having interpreted the "blog post" in this way, but it definitely gave me the impression of saying "engraving isn't that important to our customers, so we're going to concentrate on social media type features".

Re: notation: cues in divided staves

thanks all.

I don't know why I was having so much trouble with this system.
I ended up pushing some measures over, and then doing a bit of down-stream juggling with measures, and I was able to have my 1st system as only one staff.

notation: cues in divided staves

Imagine an orchestral movement. It starts with 5 measures of silence in the 1st violins, but then at the 6th measure immediately splits onto two staves because there is divisi material incoming. In the score there's no issue, just blank measures for the 1st violins until the notes come in. But in th...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

all of that is editable, just like in Finale. the only place I've come across some resistance on the forums and from the development crew, is when you require notation details that might be outside the norm. there IS a bit of an "I know what's best for you" attitude, at times. There's also a tiny bi...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

how they work?
you'll have to be more precise.

in Engraver mode, you simply select the item you want to move. In that mode you cannot delete or add items, but anything (well, almost anything) on a page is moveable.

Re: O/T orchestral parts question

Unfortunately, I don't remember what type of tape they use at my printers'.
I've made performance material in the past that required fold-out pages, but they've always been sent directly to the orchestra librarians, so I don't have any lying around the house.

Re: O/T orchestral parts question

I was finally able to add a "fold-out" page to the middle of the violin solo part. And it actually helped a lot. It turned the middle movement into a 3 page layout, then the verso of that fold out served as the 1st page of the final movement. There are still some rather tight page turns, MOST I thin...

Re: O/T orchestral parts question

thanks John, I'll have to look where exactly the "impossible page turns" occur in the part. Maybe using a larger paper size might work. I know the publisher can do this.
Right now all my orchestral parts are on standard 9x12.
I could try 9.5x12.5 (standard keyboard score size here.)
