Re: Finale v.25 and Mac OS Catalina

I remember the days when Finale was only available for Mac. It took awhile to get a Windows version.

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

I guess i missed the detail that you were talking about loading a library. Now, my approach is to delete all the shapes or expressions I don't want in the library before saving it. To be careful, save a copy of your your file that has the shapes you want in the library, and then delete all the shape...

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

I just opened the default file, created a Shape Expression, duplicated the expression, and in the shapes, there was the first shape, slot 119, and then the second, slot 120. If I choose to create a new expression and choose a shape, and select shape 120, the new expression now uses shape 120. If I l...

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

Since it's hard to understand exactly what you are seeing, it could be we might need to see a sample file to examine. Possibly there's corruption going on.

Re: Finale v.25 and Mac OS Catalina

Not to flame the Win vs Mac debate, this is one advantage we who use Windows enjoy: very old versions of Finale can run on the most recent version of Windows. Another advantage, of course, is the cost. Sorry to insert this here, but sometimes it helps those who are needing to run older versions of F...

Re: Changing playback styles mid-song

Swing is an easy one. Create an Expression to do that. There is one warning. Due to what I consider a bug (MakeMusic agrees that there is a problem), you need to make sure all the parts are selected in the Part column in the Score List. When going back to straight, use a matching expression to do th...

Re: Note-head color for selected notes

Well, you do have colors for the 4 layers. Those can be changed, if you want. However, it's one color for the entire layer.

Re: Note-head color for selected notes

Since Finale doesn't quite have the control one would want on a note by note basis, I think most users suggest doing the "coloring" outside Finale with a pdf of the file that is then "doctored" in the program of choice. Since I don't have a need for that, I'll leave it to others to make suggestions....

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

The problem with a shared expression is that adjusting it in one place adjusts it in all places. I know your suggestion is not concerned with that, but how to apply it without duplicating the shape. Copy/paste with the filter might also be considered, I guess. But my reply gave the underlying philos...

Re: how to stop Finale from duplicating shapes

When you've created a Shape Expression, and then assign a Metatool to it, there is an advantage: each occurrence can be independently adjusted, and all the other aren't adjusted. This is an extremely powerful level of control. Another option is to duplicate the Expression itself, and apply each dupl...

Re: Should I get Finale 26?

Actually, Motet has good success running older versions (2005 for sure) on Windows 10. I hope he reports here to give his findings. There are changes with v26 that would make changes to any files created in earlier versions, especially with the new Articulation paradigm. Also, files, for many versio...

Re: Adjusting playback volume for piano left/right hands

Back to the question at hand. I finally found the page I was looking for in the Documentation: http://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/FinaleWin/Content/Finale/Instruments.htm?Highlight=instrument%20list This discusses the way to access the separate staves of the multi-staff instrument. You can even reor...

Re: Adjusting playback volume for piano left/right hands

Yes. You were able to change the lower staff to channel 2. That is what you were trying to do. I wasn't necessarily suggesting that this specific issue might be covered in the manual, but many of the things that one would like to know how to do are covered in the available materials. In another topi...

Re: Adjusting playback volume for piano left/right hands

Actually, I couldn't find anything in the Documentation that discusses splitting a 2 staff instrument into 2 channels. it comes close, but not specifically about 2 staff instruments. If anyone can find that page, I would like to see it.

Re: layout problem – horizontal accidental position layer 2

In my test, I created a Staff Style using Blank Notation with Rests. I see that the stock Blank Notation Layer 1 uses Blank Notation. Create your own style using the option Blank Notation with Rests and see what happens.

I'm trying to replicate the problem and I'm not getting the same behavior. To better help, I would need to examine the file in question, or at least a sample that manifests the behavior you are describing.

Re: Adjusting playback volume for piano left/right hands

In the Ch (Channel) column, for Staff 2, click on the 2 and change it to a 3.

It sounds like you might need to spend time with the Videos, Tutorials, and reading the Documentation. This is there for your perusal.

Re: portamento

This is a piece for piano, so bowing technique would be irrelevant. There isn't a need for glissando. It is all about the connection, or lack thereof, from note to note. No sliding involved.

Re: Replacing rests with notes

I've attached an example bar where if you try to replace the rest with notes, the figures to the right of it will immediately attach themselves to what you're doing; that is: they don't maintain their position in the measure.....I'm sure this is a BASIC principle/function/concept I should know, but...

Re: portamento

Years a go I had a very talented genius piano student who would report to me often as to what composer he had been communicating with each week (Schubert, Mozart, etc.). I think we should all do the same and then we could ask them how to perform their music, and not have to sweat over what the notat...

Does it only not make sound when playing through the keyboard? What happens if you click notes onto the staff with the mouse when in Simple Entry? Also, try Reload MIDI Driver in the MIDI/Audio menu.

Re: Won't hide cautionary clef

And yet in my case, the exact opposite is the problem. I do want to force show a clef, but it doesn't display it (see screen capture), be it cautionary or regular clef. In the rest of the score, it all works well for the other instruments except for the bass clarinet. Could it have something to do ...
