Re: What is wrong with MM and Touchscreen devices!!??
On the other hand, had the thread been entitled "Are there others like myself who would like the ability to use a touch screen with Finale?" the responses might have been quite different. Certainly there would have been a few who replied that this particular feature was of no interest to them, but ...

Re: What is wrong with MM and Touchscreen devices!!??
I think the OP's question is totally valid, and I agree with him that there is a tendency by some users to dismiss posts like this out of hand as unconstructive complaints. Even though this is not an official forum, I think it is a totally legitimate arena to spike some debate about what's going on ...

No, I'm not speaking of the shorthand P mark.
Henle scores available online are pretty sparse, but here's one as well as a Schott score from the 1860s:

Re: sostenuto pedal markings
I agree with Ere. Given the amount of information that we keyboard players have to take in, it is good that each of the pedal indications has a markedly different appearance. Music notation has evolved the way it has for generally good reasons, even if they are not immediately apparent; and for thi...

Re: font kerning anomaly
I've seen this with Type 1 fonts in recent versions of Finale as well. I don't know the cause, except that clearly Finale is unable to read the AFM files properly. I also remember seeing a related oddity where Finale disregards the kerning if any tracking value is applied to the text. Do you have tr...

Re: sostenuto pedal markings
But as regular roman styled text expressions are otherwise virtually non-existent in piano scores, I can see what you're saying. I'm trying to understand this comment. It's quite possible that I'm confusing it somehow. But in 50 years I have never, ever come across a sost. pedal marking that was an...

Re: sostenuto pedal markings
To me, it would be beneficial to have all pedal instructions in the same font style No. It is most beneficial that the various pedal instructions are in different font styles, so that they can be visually distinguished as easily as possible. It is very good that the good old Ped. (which is the peda...

Re: sostenuto pedal markings
I think this symbol has been invented by the makers of SMuFL. I've never ever seen it used in any score ...yet, I suppose...! I have mixed feelings about the symbol... I've never seen it either and don't care for it. Ugly. Ped. has at least some tradition behind it; this seems more like a wannabe. ...

Re: OT: Baerenreiter edition created in MuseScore
I should clarify that I'm not a proponent of curved beams in the cases that John mentions above, which unfortunately would require me to disregard some of the cross beams in Bach's music when re-notating it on the computer. The only other way around this is to use a thinner beam, which can be just ...

It doesn't have to be one or the other. Indeed, more often than not, the two are interconnected.MikeHalloran wrote:Most notation apps promise, at some point, beautiful sheet music... For a couple, that's the only promise that they make.

Re: OT: Baerenreiter edition created in MuseScore
Thanks Knut for taking these tentative ideas of mine so seriously! I must say that I found your comparison with serif fonts quite convincing. Also, I think you are right about the likeliness that curved beams could create disorder in polyphonic, complex music. You're welcome, Anders, and I'm glad y...

Re: OT: Baerenreiter edition created in MuseScore
The more I think about it though, the more I find the straight beams of standard engraving unnatural and ugly. Isn't that just a concession to old-times limited, rather clumsy printing techniques? Maybe now, with the help of software, we can make the revolution - the revolution back to aesthetics. ...

Re: Notation question: grace note values
I had assumed that OCTO was saying that the note values of small notes should be in proportion to the tempo, so that larger note values should be used for fast groups in fast tempos. Therefore his example was to show a way of notating fast groups in both fast and slow tempi, not how to notate a slo...

Re: Notation question: grace note values
Thanks, John! At least in this particular work, they seem to be a way to make sure that the grace notes are not to be played too fast, which seems to be a sensible way to implement them. If my understanding is correct, I would modify my last post by saying that it would depend on the intended execut...

Re: Notation question: grace note values
My impression of this is that you may use whatever value necessary to get the intended lenghth of the grace notes across within the given context. In other words, the main indicator for which value to use for grace notes is the value of surrounding notes, especially the main note that the grace note...

Re: JW Change Beams>Resize Separation Problem
I see. In that case, wouldn't a combination of decreasing the beam width as well as the distance between them be a better solution? At least it would leave a more even visual impression.

Re: JW Change Beams>Resize Separation Problem
John, may I ask, why would you want to do this? Normally, the distances between beams are global, and if anything the distance is increased to prevent wedges. Your edited beams however seems so tightly spaced that they almost meld, and even if this is what you want, I don't see why you would need to...

Re: English Horn in German
I am a horn player and this is indeed correct (for F or any other key). The "French" seems to exist only in English and only as a layman's term; classical musicians and orchestra rosters (such as printed in a concert program) use simply "Horn." I will sometimes tell someone I play the French horn i...

One of the beauties of Finale is its flexibility. To take another example: currently, you can put a lyric on a rest. Dorico doesn't let you do that. Not true, you can put a lyric on a rest in Dorico You're right, but I think the point about Finale's flexibility still stands. The fact that you can d...

Well, here's a feature request: perhaps Articulations should have categories like Expressions, and the options should include a tickbox for "can be on a rest". Re: MM Feature requests
I have just come over from MakeMusic's forum and discovered this discussion. I could not agree more with Spence's remarks. Finale is flawed, but it does what it does better than any other product. It is too bad that those who try to defend Finale get slammed mercilessly because of their "overzealou...
