Re: print publishing file types/specs

The specs are sometimes posted on their website Searched, but couldn't really find anything very useful ... might you have some specific links? I was referring to the printer that will do the actual job. You might have to give them a call. It might not make any difference how the PDFs are configure...

Re: print publishing file types/specs

The printer usually has the final say on the exact format ("job options") of the PDF files they use for printing the job. The specs are sometimes posted on their website.

"write beautifully engraved music for two instruments". yup, limited to two instruments.
You could copy some of the Kodály Duo for Violin and Cello. At least your time learning the very basics of Dorico would be pleasantly spent.

Re: Can Finale open at a specific measure?

No, not directly. If you make a Bookmark before you close the file, when you open it again you'll have to access the bookmark in the View menu. Not what you want but close.

Re: recover

Look in the Documents folder on your hard drive. If you did a default installation of Finale, there should be a folder called "Finale Files" there. Inside this folder is a folder called "Backups". All of your backups should be in there.

Re: Sixteenth note runs

Apparently the only way to write a cadenza in Finale is to count the total number of beats (like 64/4) and use that as the time signature. It gets very, very messed up if you try to do that. Did you get that technique from the Make Music folks? If so, you received the correct answer. I've never had...

Re: greyed out repeat behavior

You can hide an individual repeat ending with a Staff Style applied to the measure the repeat appears in. In the style designer box deactivate "Items to Display - Repeat Ending".

In Preferences > Edit, there is an option for "Automatic Instrument Family Group Brackets". Might this affect how added staves are rebracketed?

Also, you can only use "Insert" with a "Stack Selection" (first thru last score staves). Use copy and paste on single staves.

Finale Allegro hasn't been offered since 2007. Where did you download this from? It sounds like you have an illegal cracked version.

Re: music being copied automatically in score

I know of no feature within Finale or no known bug that does what you are describing. The only suggestion I can give is to use a specific workflow. What I do is to enter all of the music on the score, then go to Manage Parts and regenerate the parts. If you do any copying and pasting, do it on the s...

Re: Spacing

One way: Use Special Tools > Accidental Mover to move the flat on the A so that it's even with the flat on the E. Respace the measure. You're going to have to reset the flat on the A to its normal position. I'd leave this until you're completely done because this trick is not spacing-proof. Turn off...

Re: cannot move system because of lock...

The lock symbols have nothing to do with your problem. They signify that the number of measures on each system is locked - they will remain as you see them. I'd approach the problem like this: With the Staff Tool, highlight all of the measures on the last 4 systems. Go to Staff Menu > Respace Staves...

Re: Problems with ScoreMerge

It looks like you are trying to merge separate parts. Do you have a score for each movement? It might be worth trying to merge the scores. Then each part will be complete, as a linked part within the score. Desperately trying to come up with parts by combining PDFs is not the answer. Finale can deal...

Re: Please see my post under Playback Issues

Very interesting. A bug in the software. How do we alert MakeMusic about such things? It's not a bug. Whenever you have a rit. or accel. you need to state a new tempo at the end of that direction, so Finale knows what to do. As far as I know, no software is capable of mind reading. If you don't wan...

Re: Hairpins crossing systems - A Lament

Dorico allows adjustment of hairpin openings on both sides of a system break. This is not to recommend the software, which is another big can of worms altogether. Still, you could try the 30 day demo. Maybe the concepts of Dorico will appeal to you. Go to the Dorico Forum and do a little lurking.

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

I've seen this before. It is always caused by improper entry of the slur(s). The anchor point at the starting note and/or the final note has not been established correctly. Here's how to properly enter a slur: √ Double click (hold mouse button on 2nd click) above the first note. The note will highli...

Re: Please see my post under Playback Issues

You solved the problem by going out of your way and re-entering a new file. That's fine, but it might have been more valuable to have diagnosed the problem and fixed the original file. It probably was an easy fix and would have added to your knowledge of how things work in Finale. Attaching a file o...

Re: grace notes

If you want 2 grace notes, they should be 16th note value. In Simple entry, select the 16th note value then the Grace Note value. You can then enter them as usual.
