Re: Missing some plugins!

Personally, I have found Windows 10 to be far superior. It’s much more stable and a vast improvement over Windows 8. I think this is the general consensus as well.

The best version was XP, but that ship has sailed…

Re: adjust syllables moves note spacing in v27

Oh my goodness, that’s a disaster. For those of us who work heavily with lyrics, changes to workflow like this (whether intended or not) are HORRIBLE.

Re: Where is export to EPS in Finale 27.1?

Hi bkshepard, Yes, this works with PDF too. But what you are describing is converting a font to vector. That may have its purpose but not for someone who wants to preserve fonts. In any case, I don't see how this is relevant, especially since it is adding extra steps. When I export a graphic, I’m a...

Re: Where is export to EPS in Finale 27.1?

That’s very strange, considering that the last 26 update fixed some issues with EPS exports.

I know EPS is sort of becoming obsolete. MS Office stopped supporting it about 3 years ago.

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

When I mentioned “garbage,” I wasn’t meaning the 3-quarters-in-6/8 example. Rather, I meant the sort of amateurish mistakes or egregious collisions that make a score look just plain bad. Finale excels at those. Of course in Dorico you can quite easily write 3 quarters in 6/8, as I said before. But t...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

Dorico also sometimes seems to go out of its way to limit the user to "what is generally done", or what fits within a vision of the way the user is supposed to use the program. I found this very confining. Well, I don’t think it’s fair to say the program “goes out of its way” to limit users. It’s t...

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

what type of staff style changes? Well, any of them. You can’t change a staff style, short of faking it with an instrument change. I personally don’t usually need this, but it’s one of the more common limitations. Also, Finale allows much greater local control of font styles and changes in lyrics. ...

Thanks Wess. Actually Finale on Mac has supported OTF since at least version 25. Windows is the problem.

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

It’s a short list. Cutaway scores. Staff style changes. Some funky shape manipulation.

There may be some valid reasons, if something like this is at the center of what you do. I had that with hymnals. Then version 3 came along…

I don’t have version 27, and I’d rather not take the time to purchase/download/install it just to check.

Re: Does 27.1 offer support for OTF kerning and ligatures?

Sigh. Finale (on Windows) is the only notation program that still doesn’t support advanced font features. Version 27 was supposedly going to fix this. Sibelius, Dorico, Musescore… they all render OTF correctly. Come on, guys.

Does 27.1 offer support for OTF kerning and ligatures?

I know this was on the radar and was hopeful 27.1 had fixed it.

Does anyone know if this update now lets Finale correctly realize OTF, including kerning, ligatures, and CALT?

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Finale lifeboat

If you keep both the PDF and the XML, the latter will get you 95% of the input, and the former will allow you to add the last bits.

Dorico generally does fine with XML imports. Sometimes more complex tuplets are a problem. I generally delete tuplets before importing.

Re: Finale blog: 27.1

Ouch. I just read all three blog posts, and while I try to be pretty empathetic to the Finale team these days, I have to admit it was pretty difficult to get through. It could have been far shorter without sacrificing any real information. Dear team, if you’re reading this: 1. Fix the bugs. I mean t...

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Hi Pete, that’s great. Don’t hesitate to get help on the Steinberg forum if you get the least bit stuck. Dorico is completely different from Finale, in my opinion, and requires a re-wiring of the brain.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

Yes, cutaway scores are completely impossible unfortunately. Depending on the piece and your workflow, it may be worth it to export it to something like Illustrator and finish the job, but there’s no pretending that you can accomplish it in Dorico.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

No, it’s not a workaround. That’s exactly what a bar number change is. It means to explicitly display the number. I guess you say it could be called something slightly different, but it serves the purpose of either displaying the measure number explicitly, or changing the number displayed if desired.

Re: Finale AND Dorico (maybe MuseScore, Notion Sibelius, etc. also)

To mention an earlier question: Dorico does have an option to reset manual note spacing. I estimate I’ve logged something like 4,000 hours in Dorico, and trained just shy of a hundred new users, so that helps me keep a pulse on what is easy for others to learn and what isn’t. Note entry for me was t...

Re: dead horse

it seems [Dorico] isn't up to Finale in that respect (control). Well, sort of. It’s true Dorico is much more semantic, and it’s a younger program, so there are things it can’t do yet, or limitations to what it understands. But that semantic structure pays huge dividends in workflow. And on the othe...

Re: Graphics programmes

If it's not an intrusive question Dan, could I ask what what sort of graphic elements you modify in a graphics programme? Also what sort of text edits do you do that cannot be done in the notation programme? For PDF text edits, it’s mostly staff labels. There’s a small but annoying limitation prese...

I periodically export from notation software into Affinity Designer or Acrobat. For the former, I do either PDF or SVG (though I prefer SVG) in order to add and manipulate graphic elements. For the latter, I open the PDF to make text edits that might be easier in Acrobat. I wish I didn’t have to do ...

Re: dead horse

Not to turn this into a Dorico thread, but to answer your question: Dorico makes many of these calculations in real-time as you enter notes and other items in the score. The benefit is obvious, but the drawback is that it does require a little bit more powerful of a computer for large scores. And ev...
