Re: Finale suddenly doesn't recognize my synthesizer

Hi Capricorn, I don't have an authoritative answer, but... Check if the USB ports on the computer and the midi interface are dust free. (Mine have been known to clog up). Also, powering down and starting up everything afresh might help. Have you tried the check box in your picture that says Auto-det...

Calculations to do with printing cost for music

Hi everyone, I'm working out the cost per page of printing my Finale score... With regard to laser printer toner cartridges, the one I am researching says it's good for 15000 A4 pages at circa 5% coverage. Do you think that printing music would also be 5% page coverage, generally speaking? If so, $4...

Re: Slow playbackslow reproduction, does not match the time set

Could it be related to the expression definition? Try editing the expression marking using the expression tool (eg. metronome quarter = 90) and see if you can tick the box so that the expression plays the tempo specified by the expression.
Just a thought... Good luck!

Re: Pages not registering as actual pages

Maybe check the View menu and the type of view (single-page) ?
Or possibly try opening the document in a New Window and then close the old window.
Or saving the document as another file and trying that.
Maybe try regenerating the parts.

Just some ideas. I wish you good luck :)

Any good books re: placement of divisi rests

Hi all, In a piano score, I have some instances of divisi writing where both hands play on the treble stave, and indeed sometimes on the bass stave. (Stems up for RH and stems down for LH). I want to place the divisi rests for each hand at precisely the correct heights. I’ve read what Gould advises,...

Triplet secondary beam

Hi all, Which is the correct beaming: bar 4 or bar 9? Screen Shot 2020-08-19 at 10.24.08 am.jpg I intend to use bar 9 beaming and I just wanted to check with y'all if I have made the correct decision regarding the breaking of the secondary triplet beam. The music is in 6/8. Thanks once again, Hector.

Re: Single automatic accents positioning advice needed

Thanks everyone. I ended up not being able to make the slur avoidance distance work, so in the end I tried "ignore" slur collision in the accent's articulation definition box, which caused most of the accents to move to an unhelpful position. However the silver lining is that I can at least now manu...

Hi zuill :) Yes, I recently created the document in the latest version. Actually, I have worked it out (i think) after reading this in the manual... ========== To unstack a single articulation Most articulations stack on entry (see Articulation Selection dialog box). Use these steps if you would lik...

Single automatic accents positioning advice needed

Hi all, Some of my accents are positioned well automatically by Finale, but there are several other automatically-positioned accents which are simply too far away from a slur, etc., in my opinion. What is the best approach to moving each of the single ill-positioned accents, one at a time ? (When I ...

Re: Publisher's iPad app looks interesting

Hi miker, Yes, as far as I can tell, the app is free. However, I am pretty sure that one would have to purchase any desired scores to view in the app. This publisher mainly publishes out of copyright works, urtext editions of Beethoven, etc.

Publisher's iPad app looks interesting

Hi all, Not intending to advertise anything, but... I just was looking online at some publisher websites (admiring various music score samples!) and happened to see this app from Henle that facilitates use of their library of scores on an iPad. It seems quite feature-rich. Just thought I'd mention i...

Re: title/subtitle placement

Hi Ryan, I select the little handle of the text box and go to Text menu > Frame Attributes. I then make sure to use the same settings in the vertical and horizontal for each different file that I want to make consistent. Don't forget, you can also take advantage of view menu > ruler, too, if you jus...

Re: Ped. symbol

In Finale you can offset your custom shape (position), so that it does the job automatically without further editing. Thanks, OCTO. I really appreciate the control that Finale offers ...

... I decided to centre on the vertical stem of the "P". I looked at a few score samples on big publisher websites and there were some variations, including aligning the left edge of the "P". I also made a quick visit over to the dark side (just joking) to see what Dorico is doing and it appears to ...

Ped. symbol

Hi again, I am creating a smart shape damper pedal line with a fancy Ped. character at the beginning of the line. Should I centre the middle of the "P" under the note stem , or centre the left hand edge of the "P" under the note stem? (Note: On the left is Finale default positioning of its Ped artic...

Re: 8va

Hi motet, indeed I think I mis-understood the paragraph on p.324, where she referred to separate staves, whereas I was thinking separate layers.... Must be time for a coffee break!

Cheers,
Hector.
PS: I have adopted your (and zuill's) sage advice.

Re: 8va

Hi zuill,

Yes, I understand what you mean. Incidentally, Finale playback correctly interprets the notation that you suggest, whereas it doesn't correctly interpret Gould's (although one could force it).

8va

Hi all, I would like layer 1 and layer 2 to be played up the octave. Is my usage of the 8va markings ok? At first, I just extended the 8va for layer one all the way over to cover the layer 2 bit, though I abandoned that idea as Gould says to indicate it separately for each layer. Interestingly, I al...

Hi all, Sorry if this is a bit off-topic (again): When a crescendo leads to a dynamic at the first note of the next system, should the hairpin extend to the system margin or only to underneath its last note? Rehearsal letters

Hi all,

When scoring for one instrument + piano, is it a good idea to use boxed rehearsal marks like A B C, etc. throughout the score? On page 520 of Gould, she refers to their usage, so I guess they are deigned useful. I do have bar numbers at the beginning of each system.
Cheerio,
Hector Pascal.
