Re: Stuck piano pedal

Update: I switched the sound to Smartmusic Softsynth grand piano as a workaround. Doesn't sound as good but at least I can keep working :)

Stuck piano pedal

Hi all, I set up a piano score and I selected the garritan steinway piano from the GPO4 collection.Playback seems fine but when I am simply improvising ideas on my piano keyboard, the damper pedal gets stuck on even if my foot lifts up. I then have to play some more and pump the pedal a bit until it...

Anacrusis and the last bar

Hi all, I have a piece that starts with an anacrusis (one beat of 6/4). A long time ago, when I was a kid learning theory/musicianship , I understood (or perhaps misunderstood) that if a piece starts with an anacrusis, then the last bar should have the anacrusis-worth-of-beats omitted. Now that I am...

Improve look of metronome mark

Hi all, Do you think the sizing of my metronome marking could be improved? I'm using Times New Roman Bold Fixed 14pt for Vivo. Page resize at 80%. Should I make the crotchet etc bigger? Also, should I italicise the c.? Screen Shot 2020-05-07 at 10.48.23 am.png Any thoughts appreciated. Cheers, Hector.

Question about notating metronome speed

Hi all, Hope you are all going ok. I am writing a piece and the time signature is 6/4 (with some bars of 5/4 here and there). I feel that the piece sounds good at crotchet = 180. I am wondering if it is ok to express this tempo with such a high number? It seems rather a big number! But it is a good ...

Dark Mode

I use dark mode for quite a few apps on my mac (such as Mail) and I find it helps my eyes. Basically, it's white text on a dark background. I just had a finger poke with Finale's view menu settings and palettes/background textures etc, but it seems that one can't change the colour of the staves, alt...

Not sure if this applies to your situation, but try plugging in any headphones into the headphone port on your computer before opening the program. This once corrected a similar issue on my mac.

Hector.

O/T: Puccini autograph manuscript

Hi all, Hope you are all going ok... O/T: I found, online, a few pages from Puccini's "La Boheme" manuscript score, with some interesting info about his choice of score paper, notational practices, orchestration, etc. https://scholarship.richmond.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1033&context=universi...

Re: A3 printer

Hi jmus! Gee, your xerox printer sounded heavy! I was going to buy the Fuji Xerox 4405D for my print-music manufacturing business. After considerable reflection, however, I realised I wanted my print-music manufacturing business to be a lot more mobile. So, I now plan to focus simply on producing PD...

A3 printer

Hi all,
Thinking about buying a mono A3 laser printer (for printing Finale scores). I have found one with a resolution of 1200 x 1200.
Is that a satisfactory resolution for printing music like orchestral scores, etc... Should I look no further with regard to resolution?

Cheers and thanks,
Hector.

Re: Oddity with incomplete PDF printing

Hi David, Just to clarify, do you get the same problem at your location, or is it only at the SMC end that the file misbehaves? (edit:try a test print from page 235-250). Also, perhaps try to re-create the file, then see if the problem persists. Also, what is the size (in MB) of the 250 page PDF? Ab...

Re: Courtesy natural in key signature

Update: If I go to Document options and uncheck "Cancel outgoing key signature", then the F natural in the key sig at the beginning of my 2nd movement goes away, however it also removes all key sig cancellations mid-movement which I'd like to keep.... I now am thinking that maybe Finale is correct t...

Courtesy natural in key signature

Hi all, At the first bar of my second movement (key of B minor), Finale is putting a "cancel natural sign" in my key sig. Re: Design a notehead

Hi again,
I have just found the two noteheads required.... (I had previously used a hollow harmonic notehead I think, by mistake).

Here is my latest attempt, with all noteheads at 100% now:

Re: Design a notehead

Hi Zuill,
Thanks, I found the filled-in one.

Here's my best attempt (I reduced the filled-in notehead to 85% to be more like the hollow one).

To my eye, it looks to be a slightly different angle, or a bit more square than the hollow one.

Design a notehead

Hi all,
I have some silently-held-down piano notes and I am using the hollow diamond-shaped noteheads for them, however I am lacking (in my chosen Petrucci font) a blacked-in diamond-shaped notehead. I'd like to make one... Which is the best tool / approach for making the noteheads?

Thanks,
Hector.

Hi all,
What does the numeral 2 mean? I wonder if it is something to do with the pedalling, or maybe something about there being a 2 beat anacrusis...
