Re: Spontaneous quitting while adding cue note

I'm going to weigh in here too, because this also happened to me recently. The file in question was a 10 minute chamber orchestra piece of mine that I was thoughtfully trying to add cues for the parts. (18 staves; 1,1,1,1 2,2,1,0 Timp, 2 Perc., 2 Gtrs, Strings) I should also say that I'm one of thos...

favorite font for lyrics

Hello All, I recently received a vocal/piano arrangement of a choral work that I've been asked to engrave. For all you out there often working with lyrics, (vocalists, choir directors, barbershop, etc.) what is your favorite font for lyrics? I was just going to default to using Finale Lyric font, bu...

Re: Ties start AFTER the dot, or not?

Motet: thanks for weighing in; Finale's defaults are, at best, a starting point for me. John: I seem to have a similar 'aerial' view about the situation as you. Defaults will take care of some of the work, but tweaking is inevitable. I guess maybe I was looking for a magical, one-size-fits-all solut...

Ties start AFTER the dot, or not?

Hello, I'm working on a piece in 12/8 and 9/8. Needless to say, there are many instances of dotted notes and dotted notes that are tied. I see Gould says "Place the dot within the tie - the tie does not follow the dot." What is the general consensus here? Sometimes I don't feel like Gould is the fin...

Re: Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

I seem to have the most success by getting my score as correct as possible, then making a duplicate of it and re-naming the duplicate compositionPARTS_SCORE.musx There are so many things that I want/need to do to the parts (Cues, for one) that altering/hiding things in the Conductor's Score is not w...

Re: Soliciting Opinions about Repeats

N: I used that 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 size paper back in my pen-and-ink days! My current paper size for computer-age parts is 9 x 12. I already buy 12 x 18" paper and then cut it in half for use in my personal printer, which can handle it. I understand that the larger paper sizes are available, and would be...

Re: Soliciting Opinions about Repeats

N. and John: Thanks for your insights. Yes, I was aware of the ledger lines touching and crowding; I just wanted to get an example up of what it was looking like unadulterated. You can see what I'm up against. Will fix all that when I start laying the part out for real. I am thanking both of you for...

Soliciting Opinions about Repeats

Hello All: I am preparing parts for an orchestral piece I've written. In the full part for one of the guitars, I have several two bar patterns that I have not yet decided on how best to notate. (clarity vs. saving space/page count, etc.) In the attached file I pulled out a few examples. A = how the ...

Re: Finale Experts

Buon Tempi,

Thank you. I get it now.
Also, it probably hinged on the fact that I just got the update email this morning.
I guess Jason Lafredo had his update before me, so that's what he was talking about.

Finale Experts

Hello, I recently looked at the Make Music Blog Post about 9 Finale Experts gushing about what their favorite feature of F 27 was. Jason Lafredo mentioned that the new key combination shortcut in F27 of Command-Option-Shift-S (on a Mac) opens the huge collection of SMuFL font glyphs. This combinatio...

metatools in smart shapes palette?

Hi All, I finally remembered to post this question, hoping that someone smarter than me might be able to shed some light. I was watching one of Jason Lafredo's "Conquering Finale" videos recently hoping to pick up (or jog my memory for) any tips, techniques and tricks. Lafredo mentioned metatools in...

Re: converting .mus files to midi/xml WITHOUT Finale

Thanks, everyone. It turns out that my friend is using Sibelius now. I told him his two options; get Notepad or just send me the files. He sent me five .mus files so I opened them and exported them as .midi files and as Music xml (v3.0) files, then emailed all of them back to him. took about 5 or 6 ...

converting .mus files to midi/xml WITHOUT Finale

Hello all, I have a friend who used to use Finale. Not sure what he is using now, but it could be Sibelius or Dorico. I don't think he is using one of the lighter notation apps out there, but I guess I can find out. I kind of have an idea what to tell my friend, but I thought I would check in with p...

Re: Printing 11 x 17 score

everybody on this thread: I too am having an odd printing problem-sounds similar to what the OP has said. Here's my situation: I recently decided to upload several of my older printed scores (2015-2019) and parts to J.W. Pepper's MyScore program. I am largely printing to 9 x 12 these days, with 11 x...

Re: Symbol for percussion with the side of the thumb on strings (guitar)?

Mike, I too saw Segovia three times in my youth; all at the magical Academy of Music in Philly. The first time I saw/heard him, it was exquisite. The second time, as we both were getting older and I was a university guitar student now, not as great-too many mistakes and not playing the music as writ...

Re: Symbol for percussion with the side of the thumb on strings (guitar)?

Tomas E, Glad it makes sense now. Great piece. Michel R E, Maybe we can chalk this up to it NEVER being included in the first printed editions, but rather something Segovia added because he thought it was a good idea; the rhythm and the the two last strings being struck probably 'cried out' to him a...

Mike, Mini-splits rule! We had one at the small Air BnB in Madrona and it worked well; we were comfortable. When we're not in Seattle visiting, we live outside of Philadelphia, where we're used to it getting hot (and humid) in the summer. We live in a 120 year old house so mini-splits were a good mo...

Re: Symbol for percussion with the side of the thumb on strings (guitar)?

Tomas E, I just viewed the first minute of the video and although his right hand is out of frame, it sure sounds like (and I'm familiar with the piece) he is executing your basic-garden-variety Tambour on the guitar. Tambours can be notated different ways. I haven't seen the edition you're alluding ...
