Mowing Devil -- You are using 2014.5? If so, your preferences file should be:

Re: please help. 8vb is not working.

A follow-up on Peter's earlier post -- 8va below the staff doesn't make sense if you think of it as "octave above"; however, 8va is an abbreviation for "ottava" so putting 8va below the staff means octave below. Ditto for 15ma, abbreviation for "quindicesima". But 8vb and 15mb are in common usage an...

I am not sure what Finale’s Preferences file is called, possibly Finale Preferences (or something like that)

It's the second: com.makemusic.finale.fprf

On the Mac you can reset the preferences by going Command-comma. The reset button is in the lower left hand corner.

How did you do that? You can fix it with Special Tools > Note Offset Tool, but there is a cross-staff shortcut that will take easily and quickly care of it.

Re: Two Accidentals

Assuming you want an F natural followed by an F sharp, on the first F use Speedy and type *. That will cause the natural to appear.

Re: O/T: engraving question - tempo changes

I hardly ever use the dashed line unless in some rare example it makes sense to me; for instance:

slowing gradually to ----------- q=60

There the tempo mark sort of completes the expression.

But in general I agree with others that there is the risk of clutter.

Re: Placing a note

Jim,

Give the exact steps that you are taking to place a note. It sounds like you are successful in changing a rest to a note, but you can't place a note in a measure that is already full.

We would need to know what method you used to change the instrument, and maybe see the file.

Re: can't edit word extensions

My advice (which is not popular on this forum): Don't use word extensions.

I use slurs instead of word extensions, and only use word extensions in the rare case that it clarifies something.

Re: selection tool and using and moving notes up / down 1 oc

With the Selection Tool selected, type shift-command-8.

How is it set? Is it possible you have it programmed for down an octave PLUS an octave? The "Plus" box should have a zero in it.

Using the same Finale version and Mac OS that you have, I can't reproduce your problem using your sample file.

If you start from the default file or from a template, does the problem still happen?

Assuming there is nothing in the Tab measures after the first line, use the Staff Tool > control-click the box at the beginning of the staff > Hide Empty Staves.

Re: Odd Bug

I'm full of long shots here, but another trick is exporting XML and importing the same.

Curious that I have essentially the same set-up as you but don't see the problem. Maybe it has something to do with some plug-in that you use that I don't.

Good luck.

Re: Odd Bug

Your Finale version is listed as 26, as is mine, but mine is actually 26.1 -- is yours?

If you clear or delete the next-to-next-to-last measure and re-create it, does the problem reoccur?

Re: Odd Bug

Using Speedy I changed some pitches and durations in both voices but didn't get the dropout that you showed. I am using the same Finale version and OS that you are.

A long shot, but since the download from the forum worked for me, if you download it might it work? That's a REAL long shot.

Editing what, specifically, causes the disappearance? I did some spacing editing with the measure tool but didn't see a problem.

Re: to silent Repetion

There are a couple of ways to go about that. One would be to make an expression (which can be invisible) which plays a note at a certain key velocity on a certain pass. You set this up by editing the expression and then making those choices under the playback tab. There will have to be two expressio...

Re: volume

If there is a reason you don't want dynamic markings in your piece, remember that you can use f's and p's and other dynamics but mark them to not show. You can either do that individually with markings, or create dynamics that are hidden. (You will still see them on screen as gray.)

Please be more specific about what you mean by "Instrumentation Page". If you mean a blank score that you can use, Finale offers many templates, or you can use the Setup Wizard.

Messing around with it, it did seem something was hinky with verse 4. I switched to verse 5 and put the words in there, thinking it would be easy enough to move that verse up, but when I did that, verse 4 suddenly started working properly.

Go figger.

Re: Hymn verses

This is a long shot, but under "Adjust Baselines" see if the offset for that verse is some huge number so the verse is there, but off the page floating up near your ceiling.
