Re: Unwanted 2nd ending bracket at end of system

I haven't used endings much, but several years ago I needed them and spent a good amount of time fiddling with them, since they look terrible by default. I wish I'd take notes. I think Mark's stray bracket may be a piece of one of the endings--there are several handles to fool with and I could see ...

You're looking at the score, rather than at the flute part.

I think you can grab the handle and move it off the page.

Using the Selection Tool or the Repeat Tool, select it and delete it.

Bill
Unfortunately, when I do that, using either the Selection Tool or the Repeat Tool, it also deletes the repeat sign at the end of m. 11.

Unwanted 2nd ending bracket at end of system

In the flute part (the only part) of the attached, movement 3, at the end of the 2nd system is a 1st ending measure. The 2nd ending measure is, of course, at the beginning of the next system. That should be clear enough, but there is what you might call a cautionary 2nd ending bracket following the ...

Re: Unlocking selected systems only

mark carlson, In what tool are you? - Page layout Tool? - Selection Tool? - or? The keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘U will unlock all systems, no matter what tool you are in. When you are in the Selection Tool, you can lock selected systems by hitting the letter L key (⌘L works too). When you are in the Select...

Unlocking selected systems only

I could have sworn it was possible to unlock only selected systems, but now, if I select even just one system to unlock, it unlocks all of the systems of the piece, undoing all manner of effort to get those systems just as I want them. Is there no way to just unlock selected systems? UPDATE: If I us...

Re: System Margin Woes

In the Staff Tool, there is a large space, almost an inch, above the top staff. Reduce that to zero for starters. Also, the fact that the top staff is reduced in size has some bearing on the look. Zuill Thanks! I think I got it back to what I consider normal by reducing the space above the top staf...

System Margin Woes

I'm editing a piece by another composer, and I started by trying to reset the page and system margins, according to the requirements of the publisher. I've tried setting the system margins for the attached piece to be .5" both on top and bottom, but it's obvious to my eye that the top system margin ...

Re: Finale 26.3 released

Always wait a few weeks before upgrading--there's typically some major screw-up. I wish I had read your comment first! I downloaded and opened it right away, and it has abruptly quit on me twice in as many minutes. Is there some way to go back to the version I had before I did this upgrade, or am I...

Re: Trouble with easy harmonic analysis

Eureka! I reread the directions and discovered that in order to place something to the right of a zero-width character (figures and diminished symbols included), you type `, which advances the cursor to the right but not to the next note.

Problem solved.

Re: Trouble with easy harmonic analysis

Could you use the figured bass font? (Keep in mind that I know nothing about harmonic analysis or figured bass.) Looking at the manual page it looks like a lot of what you need is there. Thanks, Miker. I tried your suggestion, but alas, the very same things are happening. The figured bass numbers a...

Trouble with easy harmonic analysis

I've never entered harmonic analysis with Finale, but now because of Zoom teaching, I am doing it for the first time. I'm having two problems with things that should be but are not addressed in the online manual: 1. How to add the / to secondary chords, like "V65/V" (imagine the 6 and 5 being vertic...

How to make a vertical line with hooks

I want to make a bracket on the left side of a chord, in other words, a vertical line with hooks at both ends that point towards the chord. I cannot figure out how to do it. I've tried creating a smart shape and making sure that "make horizontal by default" is unchecked, but no matter how hard I try...

Try unchecking "avoid accidentals on notes with stems". I think the flat on the E caused the extra gap on the right.

Re: Moving tremolo bars?

Mark, I do not understand why you could not get the tremolo beams centered. I could easily do it. See the attached document. ATSHS-1 MCxyz-Fixed.musx Thanks, Peter. Can you please explain how you did it? There was nothing I could do to get the beams to move, including expanding them, as you seem to...

Moving tremolo bars?

In m. 12 of the attached, I don't understand the placement of the quarter-note tremolo bars—closer to the left stem than the right—and I also don't understand why there seems to be no way to center them. Can anyone help me figure out how to move them to the right so that they are centered? It just l...

Re: Ties and notes in different layers

I was thinking I should keep them when they are three in one hand against two in the other, unless that had been going on already. But if you suggest doing it even in those places, like mm. 18-19 and 25-26, I'll gladly eliminate those, as well. I'm in favor of a score as uncluttered as possible. Pe...

Re: Ties and notes in different layers

Just another thought: I notice that you have triplet figures and brackets in a number of places. Now, some of us omit these repetitions, to avoid cluttering. In my opinion there's no need to reenter neither figures nor brackets once the simple and well-known pattern is established: left-hand figura...

Re: Ties and notes in different layers

Hi Mark. I think your solution is much better than the original and quite clear. The two A's you mentioned could be made distinct within the style I mentioned with stems up and down, (the triplet could even be played by the right hand at that point), but I think that you, as the composer, just pref...

Re: Ties and notes in different layers

Could you put the triplets on the top staff? C is kind of low for the treble clef, but still readable. Thanks, motet! I tried it, and wasn't altogether happy with how it looked. I eventually opted for adding a 3rd staff for the two systems in question. I attached it to my previous response, in case...

Re: Ties and notes in different layers

What you have just run into is the reason that I prefer Chopin's method of indicating pedal with pedal marks rather than the actual held value in notation, which can be cumbersome. It might then look like this. (I wasn't sure if you intended a pedal retake in m. 10 so I put one in.) Chopin style pe...
