Re: Strange situation with ties
I'm tinkering with this, and I've found it only happens with Bb transposing instruments. I recreated the situation in a new document with different instruments, and the problem shows up on soprano sax, flugelhorn and Bb clarinet. But alto sax, baritone sax and french horn work fine.

Re: Strange situation with ties
This is in fact a feature, to keep the ties from intersecting the key signature, as in this example: 0145.png In your case, it's being a bit conservative here, since the tie probably wouldn't cross the flat on the E space. But to fix it, use the tie tool to raise up the tie a bit (select all three ...

Re: Strange situation with ties
Thank you for your reply. The attached file is the section of the score in which the problem happens. In this excerpt, the problem is on measures 2 and 10 ("Tie End" attribute doesn't work for trumpet and sax).

Strange situation with ties
Hi. Thank you in advance for reading. I'm working on a transcription for a 3-horn band (trumpet, tenor sax and trombone), and something weird is happening in two specific measures that have the same situation. Here's one of them: https://i.imgur.com/FC74zdm.jpg The top staff is the trumpet one, the ...

Staff styles on "voiced" parts
Hi. Thank you in advance for reading. I created a score in which there are two instruments per system (i.e. trumpets 1 & 2), and I used the "specify voicing" tool to create separate parts for each. I used two layers for each instrument, and set up layer 1 for the existing part and created a new part...

Re: Barlines puzzle (for me, at least)
Have a look at this file. Maybe it will help. Feel free to ask questions if it's not clear. I would have never thought of creating a staff style that hides barlines. A huge THANK YOU! Everything is clear. Just to make sure: You put the second dotted half on the 1/2 staff by unchecking "Check for ex...

Barlines puzzle (for me, at least)
Hi. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Please check the attached image. The problem here isn't making one time signature independent of the others, but measure grouping: Three 6/8 measures in the same space of one 3/2 measure. I honestly don't know how to solve this. I appreciate your help. T...

Re: Metric modulations
If it occurs after the barline the equation is new = old. If the equals sign = is over the barline, then it is old = new. Or that's as it should be, but unfortunately this rule is not invariably applied correctly. Alternatively, add small arrows to the equation which makes things absolutely clear. ...

Metric modulations
Hi. Thank you in advance for reading. I always have a hard time annotating a metric modulation the right way. I know I can use metronome markings instead, but may this be the chance to make this clear to me once and for all: I'm working on the arrangement of a medley that starts at cut time, and I p...

Re: Copied/pasted staff styles in score to parts
Did you already see and try Christopher Smith's advice from here ?: This is a very old bug, dating back to the first version of Finale that had linked parts, 2007. In the score, select the Staff Tool. Select All (command A on my Mac, probably control A on a PC). From the Staff Menu select "Use sele...

Copied/pasted staff styles in score to parts
Hi. Thank you in advance for reading. This is something that has bugged me from a long time and haven't been able to find an answer: If I copy and paste a staff style in the score instead of using the staff tool to apply it, it will we correctly pasted in the score but it won't appear in the instrum...

Re: Notation question
Thank you! My main concern was about the pitch to be written since it's at random, and I didn't want the performer to think that the effect must be played from an specific pitch, but the highest one within his / her skills. Thank you again!

Notation question
Hi. Thank you in advance for your assistance. I'm arranging a piece for a band, and I need all the wind instruments that can do frullato (flutter-tonguing - is there a wind instrument for which this technique isn't adequate?) to play a downward glissando effect from the highest note they can, played...

I've tried that link before, but always get the same response: This site can’t be reached. www.dolmetsch.com took too long to respond.zuill wrote:Scroll down to the Using Accidentals section in this link: http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory9.htm

Re: Looking for an authoritative resource to settle a disput
Thank you for your replies so far! I know the Wikipedia article on the subject, but Wikipedia isn't considered an "authoritative resource" around here. I'm thinking of something along the lines of the Harvard dictionary of music or the essential dictionary of music notation (couldn't find anything t...

Looking for an authoritative resource to settle a dispute
Hi and thank you in advance for reading. This morning I was talking with a colleague at the university about general music notation stuff, and we got into an argument: According to him, if you put a "redundant" accidental (without parentheses) to an already altered note because of the key signature,...

Re: Non-ternary 9/8
If I understand you correctly, your question is a layout question, right? Here are some ideas: 9-8.jpg The first example uses only the beaming to tell the beat pattern. The second example adds an explanatory parenthesis above the staff. The third example displays a compound time signature. Exactly....

Non-ternary 9/8
Hi. This is my first post at the Finale Forum. Thank you in advance for your assistance. I'm writing a piece of music in 4/4 with one 9/8 measure in the middle, but it's not the expected ternary measure (three dotted-quarter beats) but just a regular 4/4 measure with one extra eighth note. No proble...
