Re: default install tree

> Surely, unless you're root, you are limited to where you can put stuff on traditional Unix...? Ha! File permissions were about the only thing holding people back from disaster in the old days. (I started with AT&T Unix System 2 in about 1983, about eight years before we even had graphics.) Newer s...

Re: default install tree

Ah yes, that Settings > Folders window. I used that long ago to move things in the first place. I can't fully explain what I dislike about the ~/Documents tree. It started years ago when I had to use Microsoft Office apps and found it was putting my files in locations that seemed weird to me at the ...

default install tree

I'm using a Mac (macOS Sonoma 14.1.1) and Finale 27.0.3.160 This probably falls in the category of a beginner question because it involves installation parameters, but I've had Finale on various Macs for a very long time (since 2004), and I've tinkered with it a lot. My main question is this: Does F...

notation of strumming patterns

I'm on a Sonoma 14.0 Mac and Finale is 27.3.something. I'm writing a guitar piece where there's a certain amount of strumming. (As in funk.) What is standard practice for notating a chord that's basically a chop, i.e. the right hand crosses the strings but the left hand mutes them? Some kind of X I'...

slash notation

Can someone direct me to where I can do a crash remedial information gulp about so-called slash notation, as for instance is often used in drum parts and sometimes in guitar parts in jazz and popular music? I have (and read a few years ago) Elaine Gould's Behind Bars , which might be overkill, and i...

Re: finding out how far back I go

That's fine. I was seeking to find out only for the sake of a writing project. I don't have any issues with compatibility of files with versions or anything like that. I just wanted to be sure of when it was that I first acquired Finale. And that information is recorded in the Order History. Thanks ...

Re: finding out how far back I go

Not in spam. However, I solved the problem. Below the regular login there is a link that says: Looking for Finale, Garritan, or MusicXML? [Login Here] Duhh. Well, I saw it and I saw Garritan and MusicXML but somehow read right through Finale. I must have assumed that Finale was the default thing. Wh...

Re: finding out how far back I go

Hmm. It's been a long time since I've logged into makemusic.com, but I do have an account login name and a password. So I tried it but it rejected it. This happens far too frequently on sites I don't use often. So I clicked the usual Forgot Password link. The email login is correct. It's recorded in...

finding out how far back I go

I see that on the Finale / About Finale menu it shows my serial number. Is there any way to determine from this what was the earliest version of Finale I bought and when? I've had it for a long time, probably since about 2002 or 2003, as I remember getting in on my daughter's student discount at Ari...

Re: playback output to headphones

motet ... how would one know? Does someone from the manufacturer monitor this group? I would think it to be an important source of information ... if they care about their users and the problems they have with their software. I'm not complaining. I love Finale and I'm deeply grateful for the excelle...

Re: from Finale to Logic Pro X

blueshift, I'm gratified to learn that all you describe is possible, though I've suspected it. Most of it is way over my depth of experience. I'm an old guy, someone whose composing career flourished mainly in the 1960s, and although I still know a lot about classical music and notation (I worked as...

Thanks for that suggestion oldmkvi.
That option is enabled on Finale and every other app in the list except Chrome (where I certainly don't want it).

Re: playback output to headphones

Huzzah. I tested my hypothesis from yesterday. If I have the Bluetooth switch OFF on my $$$ Bose headphones and then plug it in the pin jack on the Mac Mini and set Finale's MIDI/Audio Device Setup to External Headphones, it DOES PLAY ! So my previous problem was that I had the thing polling Bluetoo...

Re: playback output to headphones

This morning I learned that my inexpensive, ordinary, wired headphones with a pin jack work fine with Finale. Note that this is not my $$$ Bose headphones that have a pin jack hole in them and supply a wire, which I plugged in yesterday and found that it does not work. I'm not sure about this, thoug...

Re: playback output to headphones

Ha! I have five functioning Macs and two Apple iPads (in addition to two Android phones and two Android tablets, counting my wife's stuff), but no iPhone!

I do have a set of earbuds (Plantronics, not Apple) that I'm reluctant to try. They work wonderfully well on my phone.

Any other suggestions?

Re: playback output to headphones

I hadn't tried doing that. My Bose headphones come with a pinhole jack and a short cable. So I tried it — plugged it in and went to the Audio Device setup page and defined the audio device as an external set of headphones. While I had the phones in but before starting them, I heard a quiet ker-chunk...

Bill Stevens: Yes, everything is correct. This is a new system, so I checked everything carefully just to be sure. But I've been enduring this problem for some time on my MacBook Pro. Ebiggs1: That sounds like my problem all right, and the fact that you're running on a different platform certainly s...

playback output to headphones

System is a Mac Mini M2, macOS Ventura 13.5.1, Finale is 27.3.0.160, but I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro. My Mac is correctly set up to send audio from (e.g.) YouTube to my Bose Bluetooth headphones (QC45s). In Finale (newly reinstalled with universal binary code to run on Apple silicon), ...

Re: version for Apple silicon?

All of what Buon Tempi says is true. When I installed the new binary in /Applications, it came right up. I tested it on the most recent piece of work I've done, and all my preferences are intact. Nonetheless, I did copy the files recommended just in case. Hint to less-than-expert Mac users: Never me...

Re: version for Apple silicon?

Evidently all my preferences are intact. michaelp, although I'm sure most Mac people navigate the system using the Finder as you de...

Re: version for Apple silicon?

I didn't realize preferences were saved in a file. Where is it? I won't be able to save it from the program because I can't load it, which is the original problem. I was a software system tester in a Unix/Linux environment for 25 years so I'm completely comfortable with prowling around pathnames wit...

Re: version for Apple silicon?

OK, but this is a dumb question. I'm a long-time Finale user, and whenever I've downloaded Finale it's been from some link that MakeMusic supplied, i.e. for upgrades and fixes and the like and it somehow knows that I'm a legitimate paying customer, etc., and things work out just fine. What URL can I...

Re: version for Apple silicon?

I have version 27.3.0.160 of Finale. My macOS is Ventura 13.5.1 running on an M2 Mini (with 8 cores, 24 GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD). When I click on the app to open it, I get a popup that says "Finale.app" is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash. Obviously, I'm not going to do ...

version for Apple silicon?

Is there a version of Finale that works on macOS running Apple silicon? I just acquired two new Mac M2 Minis, and while I also still have my MacBook Pro, I'm more than a little dismayed to find that the OS plunked the app in the Trash for me saying "Finale.app is damaged and can't be opened." I unde...

from Finale to Logic Pro X

My computer is a MacBook Pro (soon to be an M2 Mini), which is relevant. Are there any Mac users among us who sometimes import the audio output of their Finale scores in Apple's Logic Pro X DAW, such as by exporting it as a MIDI file and importing it to Logic to get a better-sounding output? If so, ...
