Changing instruments in a complicated Percussion Score
Given a score in which percussionists are switching back and forth between instruments in rapid succession, it is pretty straightforward to set up a staff where different layers are sending midi to different channels on VST Banks (or even to different banks...) as a way to ensure best output. BUT......

Re: Wessmusic's suggestion that the error is the result of calculations not taking into account the width of the stem line stroke... Isn't the Euclidean 0-width line the center of the physical stroke? Wouldn't that mean the beam is aligned to the center of the stem? If so, I would have expected stem...

Finale Mixer Issues
Dear All - In the attached except, there appears to be some errant midi data which resets mixer settings as soon as I hit play. Can somebody with a similar setup confirm the behavior, and maybe even isolate the problem? Background - fin 25.3 running on a win 10 machine (playing back through flexasio...

Re: portamento
Yet another two cents... I would have preferred tenutos under the slur, and interpreted them as a "semi-legato." The issue is not with the note separation (implied by both stacc. and ten.) I would understand that to be modified by the slur (or vice versa.) However, because the dot also requires shor...

Re: Saving an .musx FINALE file to an MP3 file
There was a recent post about dropout and stuttering in exported .wav files. I think Michel found it occurred in files longer than 10 minutes or so. (So exporting fails when you need it the most!)

Try checking the reverb settings in Aria player:

Re: Sound help
So... as I thought I mentioned (but didn't, at least not explicitly)... there is a pretty sophisticated set of basic mixing tools (reverb, EQ) built into the aria player. If you haven't found them yet: Ctl-Alt-i (banks and effects pop up) pencil/edit button next to one of the Aria banks (you're now ...

Re: bracket direction
So personally, I would find a horizontal bracket such as you have confusing, no matter whether the hooks point up or down. The screenshot below shows something closer to a standard way of indicating l.h. Also, I attached the edited .mus (but in fin 2012; not sure whether you can open it with 2011.) ...

First... Glad you like "Extrada"! I'm still looking for a live premiere, and if you have some rock-star horn players... Second... Forgive me if any of this is obvious, but just to start with the basics: the effects I am discussing do not add functionality to the Aria player. Instead they are separat...

Re: Sound help
Sorry, I wasn't quite clear... Neither Aria Player nor NP3 Player can be used as a master (Bank 0 - for everything) to add reverb or other effects to the other player's output. I happened to have an old convolution reverb library from waves central on my hard drive. When I pointed finale to that VST...

Hi Guys... Re: Master effects section of the VST Banks & Effects dialogue... This serves to route output from the 8 "player" banks to global effects & plugins; in practice these would all be 3rd party add-ons. If you are using garritan instruments exclusively, then the added layer of processing is p...

Re: Key accidentals in titles
Motet - The short answer to your last question is, "you don't." For better or worse, the input fields in Score Manager/File Info are just that - database fields. As Peter noted, you can look up the character 'slot' (the Alt-####) for the accidental in say EngraverTextT, and insert it into the file i...

Sorry, our posts crossed paths... Resizing the finale application window is also a windows issue... If you click the "box" icon in the top right corner (between the minimize "-" and the close "x") the finale window (any window actually) should resize to fill the entire desktop. You should also be ab...

Re: Finale on a portrait monitor?
Not sure whether you are looking for a hardware rec or a how to... There are plenty of monitors that mount on a pivot stand and can be physically rotated from landscape to portrait. I've been using my trusty Dell (model 2414) for years and years. If you already have the hardware, and are asking how ...

So I downloaded the file, and *something* plays back for every note on my system (fin 25/win 10/NP3, GPO, GIfF.) However, the oboe patch wasn't loading, and NP3 was using the generic trumpet as a fall back. (Which I didn't notice for a a few secs because the NP3 oboe is suspiciously trumpet like to ...

I seem to remember having encountered a parallel problem with an automatic rit. that wouldn't go away. Believe it or not putting in a "non rit." expression solved it; perhaps a "non dim." would do the same?

Gould is without question the most comprehensive reference on music engraving available, so I can't think of another volume to recommend. Instead, you might check out the notat.io site for very knowledgeable (and very opinionated) advice.

Re: Broken beams on opposite sides of 8th note beam
Mark,
One thing which you may already have noticed is that the various special tools are actually 'hierarchical.' Whenever I need to invoke more than one (as here - reverse stems/beam angles/secondary beam breaks), things generally go fine if I work top down, but can end up weird if I don't.

Re: My Mix Levels are "Auto Changing"
Hi Zuill - That would indeed be the default behavior, but as I noted, I've set vol and pan to *not* send from finale to Aria and NP3. (You can right click on the controls in studio view to confirm.) Also note that the baseline vol shown in score manager is not what is propagating to the Aria mixer. ...

My Mix Levels are "Auto Changing"
And I'd rather they not do that... Dear all, could some wise guru (that is, any colleague with a similar setup) test this file for me? In this fin 25 file (win 10), the percussion mix settings are correctly saved with the file, but change immediately when I hit playback. Finale mixer/score manager v...

Re: Studio View Volume Setting
Jim, Yes indeed, your setup eliminates many variables. But the basic "philosophy" remains the same: the finale mixer sliders and/or numerical entry in the volume column of score manager should be treated as setting mic levels, and dynamic markings in the score are... well, dynamics. In midi terms, C...

Re: Studio View Volume Setting
Jim, There are two separate chains which affect playback output: the dynamics attached to each instrument/staff, and the 'mix' volume (which is set by midi CC 7.) If you are talking about "turning up (or down) the mic" on a particular instrument, then you can insert an expression anywhere in the sco...
