Velocities does not match in Finale/Kontakt

There seem to be a mismatch between velocities in Finale v.s. Kontakt. To get a playback velocity of about 60 in Kontakt (I say about 60 since I can't determine the exact figure) I need to tell Finale to play a value of 90. This means that I can never play louder than about 100 if I set it to 127 in...

Re: Change Default Key velocity to 40

Happy to find the answer to my question. Unhappy after making the change since all key velocities on notes already entered were changed throughout the whole score. Luckily I could just revert to the last saved version and get it all back. Changing the Base Key Velocity is not available in the Undo/R...

Re: Layer playback

I jump in as well. My Oboe and English Horn don't sound for as long as I want to at the end, so I need to add a second layer to play the last beats to the end of the piece. But then I need to fade out the first layer and fade in the second one. Is this possible to do? It should be, since this is ver...

Treble clef is also used for cello for very high passages.
Seems as if one should be able to figure out which clef to use in any instrument by just counting the ledger lines. Unless of course - as mentioned before - it results in too much shifting.

Re: Bass Clef or Tenor Clef for Cello and Bassoon?

In an older Swedish music theory book they say Tenor Clef is used for these instruments. I hope the book has a nice binding so it will look good on your bookshelf. Yes, indeed it has! 😆 Well, I guess this book isn't intended primarily for composers but more as a beginners guide. We used it during m...

Re: Bass Clef or Tenor Clef for Cello and Bassoon?

I learnt the cello up to Grade VIII and for a time played the trombone professionally (albeit mostly bass trombone). I agree, don't chop and change willy-nilly, and I also agree that too many ledger lines below the tenor clef are a little awkward, although for any competent classical player, at lea...

Re: Bass Clef or Tenor Clef for Cello and Bassoon?

It's mainly to avoid ledger lines. You should avoid switching back and forth too often. I've found that players can more easily read ledger lines above in bass clef than ledger lines below in tenor clef. Thanks, that's good to know! I guess it's more common to alternate between them in solo contexts.

Bass Clef or Tenor Clef for Cello and Bassoon?

In this example the Cello as well as the Bassoon is notated with Bass Clef. https://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory26.htm In an older Swedish music theory book they say Tenor Clef is used for these instruments. I opened the Study of Orchestration (Samuel Adler) and found an example on page 596 (Shoenb...

Re: I can only make MIDI edits to the violin staff in the MIDI window

Okay, so now I've discovered that I need to use the Studio View. It's odd anyway that I can see the MIDI data of the Violin Staff in Page View. That shouldn't be possible either.

I can only make MIDI edits to the violin staff in the MIDI window

No matter which measure in no matter what staff I select I get the first eight measures of the Violin staff in the MIDI edit window. For instance if I double-click a measure in the Flute staff with the MIDI Tool selected, when the MIDI Edit window opens Finale shows me the MIDI values of the violin ...

Re: Does a hidden staff play back midi if desired?

Yes, it's working here as well. I need to try it again with my score then.

A question about your example: I'm unable to "unhide" the staff since "Force hide staff" is unchecked for staff 2. Did you use the Edit Staff Attributes?

Re: Does a hidden staff play back midi if desired?

The plug-in is here: http://finaletips.nu/index.php/download but michelp's idea of devoting an entire staff to it might be easier. Force Hide Staff (Collapse) might be better than Cutaway. Thanks for the link! I've tried the Collapse option earlier, it didn't work. Haven't had time yet to try the C...

Instead of hiding the note with H, which mutes as well, use JW Change/Note entries/Visibility. Or, if already hidden with H, use JW Change/Note entries/Playback to unmute.
Can't find it. Is that a third party plugin which is not installed by Finale?

I'm curious to why you've deleted the "sounding" column. I find it useful.

Does a hidden staff play back midi if desired?

Does a hidden staff play back midi if desired? I need that since I don't get the desired playback style from my VI:s. I have some staccato notes followed by a sfz that shall be sustained. Therefore I need to have two staves, one for the sfz whose sound will disappear too early complemented by a sust...

I attach another image as complement so that you can take a look and see if there's something that can explain it. Maybe this applies to Windows only and not Mac?

That's right.

How do I make the staff names look like in the Full Orchestra template?

As you can see, the staff names are just 1,2 (and 3,4). Still, in the Edit Text window it says Horn in F 1,2 plus that the text is not moved vertically as in the score. I've noticed that it takes some experimenting to understand the text formatting when you want to make vertical changes. But there a...

Re: Contra Bass or Double Bass?

Somehow I would find those first two names not to be used by a true composer, but someone just "fiddling around".
