Re: Very Low Out of Range Notes for Tenor Sax

Go to View -> Out-of-Range Notes and select the "Off" option: https://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/Finale2014Win/Content/Finale/Ranges.htm If I forget to turn the check range off it drives me wild, the players I work with can go way above the range generally quoted. I think maybe Finale has a huge ma...

Re: Registering/copyrighting/publishing?

Unless I have misunderstood this thread (which is always possible) you cannot copyright or sell an arrangement or reworking of a work still in copyright unless the copyright owners agree - and they will probably not agree. However they may let you sell the arrangement providing they get a percentage...

Re: Accidentals carrying through the measure

Definitely only in that octave. However, it is usually wise to add a cautionary to clarify if you have (for example) E flat in one octave and E natural in another ocatve later within the same bar. Exactly as David said. Musicians correct what they estimate is a copying mistake when they are sight-r...

Re: Matt or Gloss

I think I used the wrong description, shiny would have been better than gloss . I went to a rehearsal this morning and the score did not glare and pen and pencil can write on the paper without problem. It is presumably just a shinier version of normal paper, certainly not photographic paper. Thanks ...

Matt or Gloss

I have been extensively changing the settings in Finale to get the appearance I want (and hopefully closer to the Henle look). For a rehearsal I sent the PDF to a commercial printer to print the score, exactly as it was engraved in Finale, and he printed it on gloss paper. I usually use gloss when I...

Re: Spelling diminished seventh chords

I am not entirely sure I understand the question and can't point you to any university websites. If you are asking about chord symbols, in Britain it is usually dim7 as in Cdim7 . Some jazz parts I have seen use Cº7 - which I personally really dislike. If you mean notating the individual pitches you...

The reason he wrote those few bars for A clarinet is so that they can play the written E-natural shown above (concert D-flat). That would be an E-flat on a B-flat clarinet, which is lower than the instrument can go.
Of course, I didn't notice the low concert C#.

Re: Key signature and accidental problems for transposing instruments

Out of interest, unless it is an authentic performance, the clarinetist may well play the A clarinet part on a Bb instrument - transposing at sight - so they don't have to swap instruments. Depending on the range, the E trumpet and E horn parts will now probably be played on the standard trumpet and...

Re: Invalid Paper Size

Surely the simplest (and in my opinion best) way to do this is: Page Layout->Page Size and choose *Custom* from the drop down menu and enter the dimensions Graphics->Export Pages and choose PDF from the drop down menu You may have to go to Finale Preferences and in the Edit section change the Measur...

Re: Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

Using two Finale files, one for the conductor's score and one for parts is a really good system; it's just taking me time to get used to changing the linked parts in the Parts score, not the conductor's score.

Re: Is this just a quirk of Finale?

I move the last bar to the previous page by highlighting it and pressing the up arrow. Maybe I shoud use fit measures instead. Thank you for that advice. When I do the next score I will check every crescendo to see where they are attached. This is the first time it has happened with dynamics, althou...

Is this just a quirk of Finale?

I have extracted parts from a new work - and many thanks for the help received in another thread. When I extract parts I find: Occasionally a particular dynamic marking appears above the staff, instead of below it, in all parts. Crescendos suddenly change to another part, sometimes there are two hai...

Re: Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

I have extracted the parts from a PARTS_SCORE copy of the conductor's score and everything seems to be working fine. Although the parts look usable I spend a lot of time improving the layout and positioning of various expressions; there is also odd strange slur and crescendo marks which suddenly app...

Re: Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

Thanks Motet. I extracted a section of the file to upload and the generate parts command worked properly. I then went back to the original complete file and again everything worked properly; early afternoon today it did not. Tomorrow I shall extract parts from a copy of the score and see if the prob...

Re: Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

The default page format should be fine--did you change it? I use my own settings for page format as I do most other things - such as slurs, beams etc. Thanks for the instructions on changing the colour. I don't look at the duplicate score as opposed to the conductor score (PARTS_SCORE as Thomsmit57...

Re: Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

Good points Motet, with linked parts there isn't a folder full of extra files and you can't accidentally erase a bar. I'm going to try your suggestion Thomsmit57. I don't like the orange dynamics on the score because I changed it in a linked part - your method is a good compromise as said. The condu...

Extracted Parts or Linked Parts?

I can't seem to get on with linked parts and I am going to try extracted parts again with a new work. Does anyone else find linked parts inconvenient to use? Making adjustments or adding text to linked parts are two things I find more difficult.

Re: Garritan doesn't appear in score manager

In the score manager, Aria Player appears in the drop down device list if I open a new document in Finale 26.3. However when I opened a score from 2007 into Finale 26.3, it does not appear - only SmartMusic SoftSynth. However with the 2007 score I went to MIDI/Audio->Audio Units Banks and Effects, c...

I think you do it in Window->ScoreManager, on a Mac it's Command-k. In the lower left of the page there is an Auto-Number Style tick box with several numbering options.

Many thanks for your advice John. I did have Avoid Accidentals set which I have now changed. I am glad you find the short slurs over wide intervals acceptable. Short slurs look untidy

I mentioned this in a previous engraving thread but I am still having difficulty making short slurs look good; I mentioned in that thread that even some published scores do not always have good short slurs. Here is a page of a score I am finishing and the slurs over eight notes look fine but I am st...

As far as I know you would not need permission to perform the work if it is readily available. There seems to be a misunderstanding around this; I tell my colleagues they can perform my works whenever they want but still they sometimes ask me for permission. I do like it when they tell me of a perfo...
