I had luck by turning the playback settings to off for the AU and softsynth playback. Some how that forced the midi into my Audio Midi System. Good luck

Get a free midi utility called Midistroke.

Great little program it will convert notes, CC or any midi signal into keyboard strokes.

Let me know how it works for you. I know this is late but maybe it will help the next person attempting to do the same.
