Re: Finale 25.4.1.152 loads VERY slowly

Perhaps this is not relevant in any way at all, but I have very different Finale loading times with F 26.2 on two Macs. One is using OS 10.13.6 and the other 10.14.6, but the crucial difference is that one has a spinning HD and the other an SSD. The HD takes a minute to load Finale, but the SSD is c...

Re: Need help with naming diminished 7th chords

I find the idea of there being a ‘correct’ resolution for a diminished 7th chord quite strange. High romantic and late romantic composers used diminished 7th chords to go from almost any key to almost any other, often via a dominant 7th or a dominant minor 9th, with or without a further diminished 7...

Re: Ties to enharmonic notes/chords to next system

How do you solve ties to enharmonic notes/chords from one system to next? Add ties to nowhere, then use the special tools to adjust the ties. I also added some space at the beginning of the bar with the measure tool. It's fiddly, but possible. The details will vary according to the situation; but a...

Re: Canonic utilities

An interesting example of parallel motion is at the opening of the 5th door in Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. All the instruments of the huge full orchestra, amplified further by eight extra brass and organ, are moving fff in parallel major triads. This brilliantly evokes the vastly overblown tawdrine...

Re: Chord symbols in Anglo-American countries and elsewhere

As I never use chord symbols in my own music, it's always fascinating - if for me a little arcane - to read this kind of thread. Back in the later 1960s to early 1970s I did some work (for a suitable fee) on the edge of the pop/rock/folk world and must then have understood the language of these symb...

Re: Opening an old file in F 26 - articulations

… … …It's hard to see where this occurs, but the tip off is that these articulations appear slightly boldened. I suspect that this happens when the "Implode Music" utility has been used.… … … …By the way, the JW Staff Polyphony plugin has made the Finale Implode function obsolete. It works much bet...

Opening an old file in F 26 - articulations

I can deal with this, but I thought members of the forum might be amused by this. I've no idea why the articulations were so repeated, but at least the repetitions are clearly visible and can be deleted.

Finale Preferences > Folders > Backup Files should show you where you might look to find a backup for the last saved version. For the future you may find software called ForeverSave 2 useful (it may be Mac only - if so there should be equivalents for other platforms). ForeverSave automatically saves...

Re: Flared Hairpins

FWIW (not much perhaps) I have occasionally written those flares in manuscript (in which they are easy - natural even) as far back as the 1960s. No questions were asked in rehearsal when reproduced in hand-copied parts nor were comments made: they were just played as intended. Somehow they seem more...

What's the best way to correct this? I can move the secondary beam easily enough, but then there seem to be orphaned lengths of stem.

Re: note sizes in large orchestral scores

FWIW I use Finale's Engraver font as my music font rather than Maestro. I think it has somewhat larger noteheads. I find that a 30 stave conductor's score seems legible when printed to B4 portrait, but a 38 stave one is better as A3. (Players parts, of course, need a much larger stave size.) There i...

Are you certain that this works just the same on Macs, Motet?
It's option (alt) click on a Mac to move just the one system (at least until the margins collide, if you want to drag further you'll have to reduce the top and/or bottom margins).

Re: Space before mid-measure clef

Thanks, that does seem to work, although it's not completely stable and in certain circumstances can revert.

If anyone does know of a document setting that could globally reduce the space before mid-measure clefs a little, please do let me (us!) know.

Space before mid-measure clef

Finale seems to be putting more space before mid-measure clefs than I think I need. Is there a setting than can change this? (And what might be any unwanted consequences from the change?) In Document Options there is a setting for space before clefs, but this seems to affect clefs at the beginning o...

Re: Finale 2012: How put accidental in parentheses?

That's a key signature.

After briefly checking both the Key Signature Tool and Document Options > Key Signatures I don't see any obvious way to do what you want, but I'm sure it's possible (if unusual) via some work-around.

And I now see a simple way round it is described by N Grossingink below.

Re: Lyrics: 'phrase-end dash' over double barline

FWIW in a 600 page A3 manuscript fair copy I finished in the year 2,000 I didn't use word extensions, and the result seems to look OK (and even ‘finished’), but since I took up Finale in 2001 I have used them. Whether or not they are actually necessary is an interesting question.

Re: Lyrics: 'phrase-end dash' over double barline

It's called a ‘word extension.’ While in the Measure Tool, double-click on the bar which ends with the double barline, then in Measure Attributes untick the option ‘Break Smart Word Extensions.’ I think that should do it, but please come back if it doesn't.

Re: Finale 26 articulation chaos

I'm not sure how to find the relevant post on this forum, but Peter Thomsen recently said in response to a comment of mine that if all the articulation vertical positions were set to zero when opening an F 25 file in F 26 this did not happen (I think that was the gist - Peter?).
