Re: Fermata on default whole rest
An empty measure doesn't even need a rest symbol at all (a practice used by some new composers). FWIW (not much maybe) in my numerous manuscript fair copies (as well as in my still continuing MS sketches) from the 1950s until my acquiring Finale in 2001, I always left empty bars empty of any rests ...

Re: Human Playback Glissando Help
Possibly (but this may not be how Human Playback works) because a *true* glissando on the trombone cannot be greater than a diminished 5th/augmented 4th. To test this you could try it with B natural to F which would be 7th position to 1st on the 3rd harmonic. Are you using GIFF sounds for the trombo...

Re: Bass Clef or Tenor Clef for Cello and Bassoon?
It's mainly to avoid ledger lines. You should avoid switching back and forth too often. I've found that players can more easily read ledger lines above in bass clef than ledger lines below in tenor clef. Thanks, that's good to know! I guess it's more common to alternate between them in solo context...

Re: My system won't move up
Without seeing the file the only guess I can make is that it is to do with either ‘System Margins’ (top or bottom) or ‘Distance Between Systems’ both of which can be edited via the Page Layout menu.
I expect somebody here may have some other ideas if you've already done that.

Re: Contra Bass or Double Bass?
i wouldn't go that far. The appearance of the music definitely affects the player's impression of a composer's skills. Yes; but I think the point being made here is that some aspects of appearance matter more than others, and there are some which probably make no difference. If a double/contra inst...

Re: Couple of questions
It just matters for me knowing what's what when editing something which I didn't do myself. I think I cannot make myself clearer than this. Sorry. I sometimes feel a little unsure even when editing something which I have previously entered myself using voices, since I only use them occasionally. If...

Re: Contra Bass or Double Bass?
FWIW for some reason of quirk, in my own scores I use the label Double Bassoon rather than Contrabassoon, but write Contrabass Clarinet and then Double Bass for the stringed instrument. In theory, perhaps I should be consistent and call them all double or all contra; but nobody cares.

Re: Best keyboard
I use only the computer keyboard for all Finale entry and editing, including large operas &c. However, it's just my habit: I doubt that there would be any tangible advantages. It works; but so would a MIDI if that had become my habit. A serious pianist would probably be more comfortable using a MIDI...

Re: Finale graphic absent from PDF
Thank you all for your comments. David, if that ossia is for technical reasons, it's unnecessary, because any pianist who can span an octave can play it in the form shown in the main text by playing the bottom two notes with the thumb. I had indeed supposed this to be the case, but when my rather aw...

Finale graphic absent from PDF
This was odd, but cured by relaunching Finale. The graphic oppure or ossia shown in the attached screenshot was absent when I exported the page as a PDF using Finale's graphics tool (usually reliable as a way of creating PDFs from Finale on a Mac). Initially I thought in might be because I used EPS ...

Re: Finale's odd bugle transposition
Hope that helps, or is at least of interest. G. That's of great interest. Recently I wrote a 45 minute collection of songs for voice and piano (public premiere of the complete collection due 10 Sept: Covid, storms, Putin et al allowing) in which I have quoted an extended cavalry trumpet call in E f...

I once had the temerity to say to Boulez that while he was a rule maker (he did have rather dogmatic views) I was a rule breaker.John Ruggero wrote: ↑Tue Mar 01, 2022 4:41 pm… … …I've never liked the "Rules are made to be broken" approach.… … …

Re: similar intervals
As people have said: it depends on the sound you want. Consecutive fifths (which I've called them all my life, and I was 81 on Saturday) can be found in all sorts of pieces, including in the ‘standard repertoire’, but not often in basic part writing, unless a rather stark effect is intended. This is...

Re: "Opp.?" What is this Dynamic?
Might it be an abbreviation for oppure = ‘or’ or ‘otherwise’. It is a viable alternative word for ossia often used by Italian composers and indeed sometimes by opera and vocal composers who are not Italian. Ah! I missed the last line of Peter's post. He is likely to be right: I use the word oppure m...

Re: Finale's odd bugle transposition
Ha! Yes did I type “in D”? Finale's bugle is indeed in G, which I've not encountered myself. Motet, I'm relieved that B flat is usual in the US too, and, MIke, that Wikipedia seems to agree! Who knows why Finale has chosen the unusual (but not unknown it seems) G transposition: another Finale mystery.

Finale's odd bugle transposition
Since I intend to quote them in a piece I hope to write, I'm transcibing some army bugle calls from the UK Ministry of Defence manual of the complete British army bugle and trumpet calls. A British army bugle is in B flat, but it seems if one chooses ‘Bugle’ as the instrument when setting up a Final...

Re: How do you notate an optional measure? Or ad lib repeated notes
I have seen scores, mostly opera scores, that use "Vide" for an optional cut. They would have Vi- at the beginning of the cut and -de at the end. ::: Bill In case anyone is interested, ‘Vi………de’ as used to indicate an optional cut does not, as Elaine Gould incorrectly says in her excellent book Beh...

Thanks: I'll give that a try.
Apologies for the slow acknowledgement, but we've just been having another prolongued power cut because of violent storm force winds.

Changing the way part names appear
I have a set of parts, created nine months ago, cueing, layout and all the rest complete, in which currently the names appear as I should wish on the first page of each part. Following my usual practice, I deleted the names which appear at the top of each subsequent page. However, I should now like ...
