Re: Position of lyric syllables in short melismas

It looks a lot better, for which very many thanks. It seems possible that I'd applied a plethora of manual adjustments back in F 2003 and that these are now coming home to roost. Hazards of computers! I thought I'd only uploaded just one page (the first), but the thing was I hadn't saved first, so a...

Re: Position of lyric syllables in short melismas

This is the first page from the file. The settings should be the same as for the full file. All that's changed is the ‘final’ barline at the end of the page from the removal of all following pages.

(The placing of that first pp has now been put right - it's never ending!)

Position of lyric syllables in short melismas

When I opened this file originally created in Finale 2003 (from my manuscript of 1993) I noticed that in some of the short melismas on tanzt the syllable was well to the right of where I have now put it (see screenshot as now adjusted: crotchet = 52). To get that in F 25 (I haven't yet tried it in F...

Yes, very quickly and easily, so if these are the only occurrences I don't need to worry too much.

PS I think the group paradigm changed in Finale 2011 or 2012, so being created in F 2010 the original file was before this change.

Re: Strange phenomenon of missing groups

Am I safe to assume from the absence of any reply that experiencing this phenomenon is unique to me? If it's also unique to the specific file, I should probably forget about it (having corrected it). It's just (no more) possible that my applying various Staff Styles to other groups within these thre...

Strange phenomenon of missing groups

This is something odd I've just noticed and I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered anything similar. In a score of 410 systems, 315 pages nearly 1900 bars (all in one Finale file), created in 2012 in Finale 2010 and now opened in F 25, there appear to be three systems in which the woodwind gro...

Re: Page format dialogue staff height

3) To calculate the resulting height when the page size is increased to a bigger size (e. g. A3), multiply by the corresponding scaling factor. To increase the page size from A4 to A3 (= the double area), multiply the height by the {square root of 2} (= 1.4142…). 0.35cm x 1.4142 = ca. 0.49cm Right(...

Re: Page format dialogue staff height

Thanks, I think I sort of understand! Once I have the stave height for A4 then it should be simple enough to calculate the height when printed to B4 or A3 by multiplying it by the B4 or A3 page height divided by the A4 page height. The people who usually print my scores make the appropriate % adjust...

Page format dialogue staff height

Even after 20 years of using Finale, I remain confused by this part of the page format dialogue. The units are cms (except the first at the top which seems obstinately to remain in inches). I use a notional A4 for all Finale documents, but this file is actually printed to either B4 or A3. The inform...

Re: What does m. v. mean?

And note that mezza voce does not equate with mf . For a singer ‘half voice’ is really rather quiet and without fully projected tone, indeed sometimes almost tonelessly. One has to create/imagine its instrumental equivalent according to context (as with sotto voce ‘under the voice’). There were quer...

‘Messa di voce’ is a standard (but fairly advanced) vocal technique. I've not heard the term applied to instrumental performance.

Re: First time using graphics tool...wasn't as easy as I'd hoped

This is made up from four separate font-based wavy smart lines (available in several different sized waves), but their joining exactly in the Finale file doesn't seem to guarantee exact joins in the PDF. For my purposes that's not the end of the world as long as the player understands what's needed ...

Quick answer: in Mac System Preferences you can set up application specific keyboard short cuts.

There are other ways too plus the already existing short cuts mentioned by Peter above.

Re: Anacrusis and the last bar

Gould has a brief mention on page 484 under the "Bar numbers" heading.… … … Ah, I see her term is ‘up-beat bar’. I often heard ‘pick-up bar’ in the late 1960s early 70s when I did some commercial studio work, but maybe up-beat bar is the more usual term here in the UK (although an incomplete openin...

Re: Anacrusis and the last bar

I can't find it in Gould either, but I expect there's a mention somewhere. I don't think it matters if you start with an anacrusis and end with a full bar (I've certainly seen it in scores from reputable publishers). That apart, I think the best modern convention, at least in the broadly ‘classical’...

Yes: as Peter says, you must restate the accidental for each octave in which it occurs and it only applies for one measure.

Re: Quarter note triplets with mixed note values

If you're using Speedy Entry key option(alt)-3, then enter a quaver (8th) to establish that it is a triplet of 8ths, then if you actually want the triplet to begin with a crotchet (quarter) put the cursor on this first note and change its value from an 8th to a quarter, then enter the rest of the tr...

I agree with Motet. When you go into 5/4 for the first time you might add (crotchet = crotchet) for clarity. As for the general question of 180, both the very different mechanical metronomes I have here (one nearly 10 ins tall with the traditional wooden pyramid case, the other a Wittner Super Mini,...

Re: Tie from 'Nowhere'

Simple Entry is correct. T is to tie to the next note, Shift-T to the previous. This also works when you have ties into a second ending. It even plays back correctly! Nick, are you doing it at the beginning of a staff? It doesn’t work mid-staff. It seems to be exactly the same shortcut in Speedy an...

Re: Ver. 26.2.2.493 Crashes

In my limited experience of something like this happening (with an earlier version of Finale, maybe 2009) it was caused by a specific entry of a specific expression, maybe a dynamic. Try removing in turn different categories of expression, smart shapes &c from the harp part. If this is the cause of ...

Re: Finale 25.4.1.152 loads VERY slowly

Perhaps this is not relevant in any way at all, but I have very different Finale loading times with F 26.2 on two Macs. One is using OS 10.13.6 and the other 10.14.6, but the crucial difference is that one has a spinning HD and the other an SSD. The HD takes a minute to load Finale, but the SSD is c...
