Re: Strange/Incorrect/Unwanted Behaviour in 12/8
Same strange behavior here. Maybe input a dotted quarter note and then a dotted quarter rest each time the situation occurs?

Re: Is it notation standard for the pedal on/off symbols to not follow a horizontal line?
The Ped. without a * is the way some have indicated overlapping pedal while still using the old system. It's interesting that Chopin never hit on this way of showing overlapping pedal and this has created many issues. The few times he uses a Ped. without an * it means other things. After the first C...

Re: Is it notation standard for the pedal on/off symbols to not follow a horizontal line?
Back to your original question. No it is not standard for the Ped . * style of pedal markings to align. In fact even a single Ped . doesn't have to align with its own * release. For examples of extensive Ped. * markings check out: https://ks.imslp.net/files/imglnks/usimg/2/22/IMSLP03692-Godowsky_cho...

Re: ties
I agree totally about the clutter, but unfortunately holding notes through each other in keyboard music is something that causes unavoidable complexity given our notational system. Sometimes the double stems are omitted for faster written-out broken chords in a even rhythm, but not, in my experience...

Re: ties
That's it. But you can omit the rests, they are understood. And, of course, do some nice things with the spacing so the dot on the dotted quarter note is not crowded. Check out the bottom system of page 12 (ms. 163 etc. of the last movement) for a famous example of this: http://ks4.imslp.net/files/i...

Re: ties
Yes, that would be confusing for many. I would notate it the normal way with double note heads and/or stems and long ties. And depending on the situation, you might need to write non pedale, as well.

Re: SmartScore scanning glitches
If you are planning on doing a lot of scanning, buy the latest edition of SmartScore at their website. It is far superior to the lite version that used to come with Finale. You will have a lot less head-scratching to do.

Re: Anacrusis and the last bar
It depends on the piece. Many pieces that start with an anacrusis have the same iambic grouping:
3|1 2 3|1 2 etc.
at the end as well, so the last bar would naturally be incomplete. Other pieces might have an anacrusis at the beginning only, so the last measure would be complete.

Re: appearance - stems
No. 1 would be best if the accompaniment is sometimes above and sometimes below a single main melody line. No. 2 would be best if there are two main melodic voices as in a duet between a alto and a soprano voice, the alto below the accompaniment with stems down and soprano above the accompaniment wi...

Anders, I have produced the PDFs both ways: with the graphics tool or through the print menu. No problems either way. I used to go the eps to Acrobat distiller route, but no longer.

Re: Problem 'Articolazioni' (Smart shape tool when PRINT)
Very strange. I must live a charmed life, or need to have another eye exam, but I have never seen such behavior, thank goodness. I just checked the big project that I am completing that has very intricate placement of dynamics, pedaling, fingerings etc. and everything is where it should be when I co...

Re: Tuplet not allowing correct amount of notes
That's an excellent analysis, Anders, thank you. Actually, I am continually amazed by how good the writing is on the music notation forums, especially given the number of non-native speakers like yourself. So the occasional lapse stands out and reminds me of the steady erosion of standard English th...

Re: Tuplet not allowing correct amount of notes
You are right, BuonTempi. Great writers have done and will do all kinds of creative things with the language, especially the ones during the wild times of Shakespeare etc. when the language was just settling down. And the attempt to prohibit split infinitives and ending prepositions etc. is absurd s...

Re: Tuplet not allowing correct amount of notes
I've heard it said that great literature can act as a kind of filter that refines and slows down the natural evolution of spoken language, which is the reason that English speakers can still read Shakespeare (with a little help) after several centuries of language change. So what troubles me is that...

Re: Tuplet not allowing correct amount of notes
Good point, motet, and that might have unconsciously influenced the choice of words in this case. But one hears "amount" replacing "number" constantly now from native speakers, and it sounds like an obnoxious wrong note to me. Then there "less" instead of "fewer" as in "Less people speak correctly t...

Re: tied over into beginning
The natural for the B should appear at the beginning of ms. 26 and 27 as well, and probably every time the augmented octave is restruck. There is a unwritten rule that many composers adhere to: Convey what you want through universally understood musical symbols. Only use words when the necessary sym...
