Or, enter them as usual but in Layer 4, then apply the Staff Style "Blank Notation - Layer 4".

EDIT: Enter the melody or just the rhythms with lyrics, then the Staff Style will hide the notation and leave the lyrics.

Under Edit—Preferences, I selected Reset All Preferences. I think you have to trash the preferences to get an absolutely clean set. This sounds vaguely similar to the dreaded "file overwrite bug", where the contents of the file on view are overwritten by the contents of the file in the dock. This is a rare occurrence, but has happened to me a few times, years ago. Mac only, apparently.

After entering the hidden articulation, are you applying music spacing to that measure? As already mentioned, Spacing Options should be set to "Avoid Collision of Articulations".

It would help if you could post a Finale file containing one or 2 systems that exhibit this problem. Right now, it's just a guessing game as to a possible solution. I'm wondering about page size and system scaling. Letter size will be a challenge - reducing the system scaling (staff size) will help....

You can use the Macintosh Font Book to preview installed fonts. Set the view to "Sample" and type over the sample type with your own choice of musical terms.

Here is a visual font map that may help. The Opus Percussion font I'm using is a "dfont" dated 2009. If yours is older, that may be a problem.

Additionally, in Document Options > Chords you can change the vertical position (baseline) of the alteration.

You might want to consider deleting the troublesome page breaks. Make your own page breaks. Let's say a tune should appear in one page. Lay it out and lock the systems, then adjust the system margins so the systems are spaced evenly and occupy most of the vertical space on the page. There is no room...

Document Options > Fonts > Text > Measure Numbers. Change to your Arial 14 there.

This only affects measure numbers entered after you make this change. If you have any already entered that are wrong, delete them and re-enter to get the new font.

If I would have known that you imported this music into Finale and not entered it using Finale's entry tools, my first suggestion would have been to manually run music spacing to make sure Finale properly "sees" what's there.
