Musetta above. Goes up to a B.
No, don't take that up the octave. I've heard precisely one player play that high: Ian Bousfield.

There's a C at 5:39. And that's not written, he just wanted to play that high.

Re: elbsound.studio Perfect Layout

Is m 17 too high up an octave? Which piece? The Waltz or the Meditation? Still for trombone or another instrument? For trombone, a high F is the max you want to go. That's second F above bass clef (or the F at the top of treble clef). Even a D is pushing the range. Keep in mind that unless you're d...

Re: elbsound.studio Perfect Layout

Yep, definitely a hard piece for trombone. About a year ago I wanted to play it so I wrote a version in Bb, which is not quite as high (only a D vs an F#). I've yet to hear a tenor trombone player play it in the original key, so I'd be really curious as well to hear her play it if she could. This pi...

If you're familiar with JW Lua, I modified one of Jari's scripts to change all possible harmonics in a given region. By default, it also only checks for valid harmonics. https://nickmazuk.com/Resources/JWLua#stringharmonics Just install as you would any other JW Lua Script, highlight the entire musi...

Re: Roman Numberal Prolongation

The link in the original post is about using the Finale Numerics font for adding the numbers (Arabic, not Roman) under the staff. The method Finale uses stacks 3 numbers under the staff. If Word Extensions is on, it produces one extension aligned with the bottom of the stack of numbers, which is no...

I've also seen a piacere , meaning "at your pleasure/will", which will signal that it doesn't have to be strictly in time. In terms of other suggestions already here: Rubato : Specifically means to steal time. The assumption is typically that if you are going to take some time here, you're going to ...

Re: JW Lua

I tried that, and a message popped up saying I didn't have permission to do that. It wanted to put things elsewhere. I found a folder in my downloads folder, and asked the Lua plugin to look there, so it's now up, and running. I was able to add the Jazz Font Move Dots script (using copy/paste) to t...

Re: JW Lua

Most people I know put JW Lua and all their JW Lua scripts in /Plugins/JW Lua. You have to create the JW Lua folder yourself.

Especially once you start adding new scripts to the plugin menu to act like plugins, it can get really chaotic so it's useful to have them organized in their own folder.

Re: JW Lua

JW Lua is technically still in beta, though with the exception of a couple known bugs and a few missing features, it's very complete and stable. For all intents and purposes, you can consider it out of beta. The only real issue right now is that not a ton of people have adopted it. For the most part...

Roman Numberal Prolongation

Ok, so let's say you're using the lyrics tool to type in Roman Numberal analysis into the score using this method: https://usermanuals.finalemusic.com/FinaleMac/Content/Finale/ht-figured-bass.htm How would you add the horizontal lines used to prolong and extend chords? Is there a way to do it still ...

Re: Figured Bass Analysis

Different schools and theorists call the cadential 6-4 differently. Some call it a I 6-4, others a V 6-4. The I 6-4 interpretation is more literal, while the V 6-4 is more functional. I 6-4: Literal Yes, a GCE chord in C major is a C Major chord, and so it is technically a I chord in second inversio...

Re: Page orientation unexpectedly changed

It looks to me like the new page's system is just resized incorrectly. This often happens if you add instruments to the score later on, or the systems reflow onto a new page. You can either use the resize tool and/or page layout tool to fix each of the following systems manually, or you can use a JW...

Re: percussion and voice assignments!

Glad to be of help.

By default, layers 1 and 3 will stem up and layers 2 and 4 will stem down.

Of course, you can always change the defaults like Peter noted.

Re: percussion and voice assignments!

Hi jjvibes, I'd suggest looking into using different layers. Put the snare line in layer 1 and the bass drum in layer 2. Then, by default, the snare drum stems will go up and the bass drum stems will go down. You can switch layers in the bottom left corner or through View > Switch Layers. Hope this ...

Re: Correct use of a repeat

Yeah, I've never seen double measure numbers for a repeat. It would be like having a repeat from measures 20-29, and the next measure is somehow 40! Just doesn't make sense to a player. Your best option is to either repeat in all the parts or not at all. They are perfectly acceptable to use to save ...

Re: Correct use of a repeat

I have to agree with Motet that you should not have repeats in some parts and not in others. I've been in many rehearsals where that's the case, and it has never gone well. Especially if the conductor doesn't know that only some parts have repeats.

Re: question mark symbol in Symbol Selection

I've never been 100% sure what that means, but my guess is that it's symbols that aren't defined by the font.

I know that when it comes to web design, if you require a symbol that the font doesn't define, you get a similar question mark symbol. So maybe that's it.

That is the default output if the music font they used is not installed on your machine. Double check that whatever font she used in her document is also installed on your computer.

Re: attachments keep getting rejected

Miker is probably asking about the size of the image.

Since you're on a Mac, open the image in Preview. Then use Tools > Adjust Size to make the image smaller. That's probably the easiest way to lower the file size so you can upload it.

Re: Trombone "splat" sound notation

As a trombone player, I know of no notation to indicate "splatting". Classical trombonists do not splat by default, so even marking sf or sfz will not make us splat. Even at fffffff, sfz does not mean splat. It just is a heavy accent. However, I'd use Motet's suggestion of just writing "splat!". Eve...

Eighth Note Beaming in 4/4

Finale often likes to beam eighth notes in 4/4 as if it was 2/2. Especially when there are three eight notes together. I find that both as a composer and musician, it can make the rhythm harder to read because at first glance they can look like triplets instead of normal eighths. Screen Shot 2019-03...
