Re: Easy tremolo bug?

How did you create the original tremolo measures? If I click on one of them with the Speedy Entry tool and then exit the measure, Speedy seems to think the original measure is missing rests. I created the same dotted-half tremolo in one of the other staves by inserting a quarter rest followed by a d...

Re: Big dot, little doc

That's a pretty nasty lick if it's double-stops. As Zuill said, the bottom notes would probably not be smaller if it were meant to be double stops. I really think in this case it's an alternate version that's easier to play.

Re: Can you split measures and create multimeasure rests across these measures?

In the score, open the measure attributes for the measure where you would like it to break a multi-measure rest and tick the little box for break a multi measure rest.

Re: Big dot, little doc

Typically, when you see something like that, the large noteheads represent the notes the composer actually wants and the small ones are optional notes in case the actual notes are too difficult or out of range. Those upper notes could be pretty difficult, not to mention hard to tune, for a less-expe...

Re: Confuse with notation

1)After a long rest, it helps give you a cue to hear that gets you ready to start playing again. +1 Adding little cues like this in parts can be tremendously helpful for a player who has had a long period of resting--especially if they've been doing things like changing instruments. It helps preven...

Yeah, be forewarned. For those who just click through all the installation options without reading them, one of the options, that is turned on by default, is to delete Finale 26. Pretty dumb for a default setting if you ask me. But they didn't...

Re: Flip tremolo symbol

Finale puts the tremolo sign on the stem side of a note, even if there is no stem. Probably the easiest way to flip them is select the measures with the Selection Tool and choose Utilities > Stem Direction > Up.

That's the "command" key, right? The Mac manual says Option+1 to +9 are for tuplets. Is that in fact wrong?
The manual is correct. On a Mac, tuplets are entered by pressing Option+desired tuplet number. E.g., Option+5 yields a quintuplet.

Doesn't a quarter triplet equal 683 (actually 682.66667)? It's durational amount is 2/3 of a regular quarter note.

Yeah, I mainly used playback just to check notes, etc., but lately I have been wanting to improve that so that I can make better demos for my clients.
You may also want to check out NotePerformer for making better-quality demos without a huge amount of effort.

Re: A notation question

So you'd go with (1), D major key signature. Yes, that seems to be the most common practice for key signatures and modes. I understand the need for people to sonically hear the difference between say, E-major, E-minor, and E-dorian, but we traditionally use the key signature of the relative major k...

Re: A notation question

A minor key is also a mode and we typically use the relative major key signature for that with chromatic alternations in the notation as needed. Therefore, I recommend continuing to use the same practice for other modes?

I don't think the cimbasso, at least in its modern incarnation, should be thought of as a ‘legacy instrument’. The Cimbasso has become a pretty standard instrument for "brassy" film scores. In addition to seeing it in the studio these days, many of the better brass sample libraries that cater to fi...

Slash Notation Hides Slur in Normal Notation

I'm writing a rhythm chart that I want to also include some "licks" for the player. If I put a slur on the notated passage (1st image) and change the rest of the measure to Slash Notation (2nd image), the slur disappears. It isn't deleted, it's just hidden. If I remove the slash notation, the slur s...

within Speedy entry, with MIDI keyboard: enter wrong note (F or F#), using arrows go to that note, then press + to make a double sharp, then 9 to rewrite it enharmonically.
Yeah, that seems to be the quickest approach. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

How are you entering the F## in Speedy entry? I can enter an F# then put the cursor on the note and click the + key but it's all about the same amount of time it takes to click and drag the "wrong" note. I was just wondering if there was a better way.

Thanks, Bill. That also works, but I'm not sure it's any faster since you still have to position the cursor. I may be that I'm looking for something that doesn't exist, but thought I'd check. Unison Double Noteheads

Lately, I'm writing a lot of music for Ukulele and frequently have a situation where the same pitch is played on two different strings. I write in Speedy entry and have been using the approach of playing the chord with a "wrong" note and then dragging it into the correct position with the mouse. For...
