Re: Finale 27 advert

Greetings! Thanks to Hector’s recent e-mail, I’ve just paid for an upgrade to Finale 27 and the download consists of these three files in MakeMusic Finale v27.zip. Namely: License file, finale27 Setup.exe and Installation Steps.txt. I’ve no idea what to do now. Nothing seems to work when I click on ...

Re: copy and paste multiple times not working

I am pleased to report back that ctrl-alt-V is now working! For some reason (and I don't know how it happened) yesterday a copy of a programme called Clipboard Help+Spell installed itself on my computer. i have now deleted this programme and all is well again. Apologies for taking up your time - I s...

Re: copy and paste multiple times not working

Thanks for your replies. I have restarted my computer but alt-ctrl-V is still not working. I am now thinking this might be a Windows problem, as when I was in Word this morning, there were some strange feint noises audible when I was doing copy and paste in that programme.... But that doesn't help m...

Re: copy and paste multiple times not working

Still no joy with alt-ctrl-V, but having checked for a solution, Paste Multiple using the ‘one-click method’ does work and brings up the Paste Multiple dialog box. Still not ideal and not as quick as alt-ctrl-V.

copy and paste multiple times not working

Greetings!

Does anyone have any idea why ctr-alt-V is no longer working to copy and paste a bar multiple times? Instead I get the 'elapsed time' announcement! This worked fine yesterday and is now across all files.

Re: Global cautionaries

Hello Motet! This is an interesting question! Here’s one idea which may help a little. For a piece in, for example, C flat major, tell Finale to change the key signature to D flat major, but select ‘Hold notes to original pitches’. At least that way all the C’s and F’s will have their cautionary fla...

Re: OT - definition of 'nested tuplet'

Thank you for your replies. I always thought it was both tuplets together, but a pal of mine has done some brief internet research and 3 sites say it's the smaller value tuplet and 1 site says it's both together! So like Motet says, it seems to be a little unprecise. Interesting, though!

Oh my goodness me – I would never have solved this without your help! Thank you so much Peter! I wasn’t sure at first where Beam Over Barlines was to be found, but finally discovered it at Plug ins > Note beam and rest editing > Patterson plug in lite > Beam Over Barlines. It’s worked perfectly! All...

OT - definition of 'nested tuplet'

Me again!

Slightly off topic… How do you all define 'nested tuplet'? Is it the combined group of more than one tuplet together or is it the tuplet within the group which has the smaller value of the two?

a lyric problem

Greetings yet again! I have a vocal piece to do which has a couple of bars with two quavers beamed over the bar line. How do I get the lyric onto the 2nd quaver? Click assignment on the 2nd quaver doesn’t work. I can place that lyric under the first quaver but then can’t move it along! Andreo Basisto

Hello Michel

One possibility would be to cut away the lower stave and just leave the upper one with the cues.

Re: match bar number fonts

Greetings Motet! Many thanks for your reply. I have now got the bar numbers displaying as I wanted (and like all my earlier documents). It is certainly something to do with the second section. It wasn’t working for me because I’d used that region to create bar numbers with brackets for repeated bars...

match bar number fonts

Greetings! I have decided to start afresh with a new document rather than editing an old one. It looks OK so far apart from the bar numbers. How do I get the bar number fonts to match up? I want Arial 14 to be the number showing at the start of each line and also above each bar when in scroll view. ...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

Yes, this is fine now. The normal fingering for an artificial harmonic is thumb-three and that’s what I’d do for the higher harmonics, But for the lower ones, even as low as the B flat on the G string (bar 25), I’d use thumb-four; they’re perfectly possible and less painful for the poor old thumb th...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

Yes, that’s a good idea – it gives the player a choice. Three comments: In the original line of artificial harmonics, bar 24 should be on the G string (and thus G string to the end of the line). In the ossia bars, bar 22 is on the G string – it’s the natural harmonic at the 4th above the open string...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

As for the harmonic at the augmented 4th or minor 7th (for the C in bar 24)… . Well, Hellouin says they are slightly flat so perhaps it’s not a good idea to depend on them. He calls them false harmonics, whatever that means precisely. I’ve just tried them both on my double bass. The one on the G# is...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

Yes, that’s how I notate the double harmonic with the two diamond-headed notes. So in bar 23: the low D means “play on the D string”; thumb plays the lower harmonic (which is the 8ve of the open string, so easy to find) and then the 4th (or 3rd) finger can stretch out to the upper harmonic. I first ...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

For double bass harmonics, the book I most consult is Pierre Hellouin Les Harmoniques á la Contrebasse [Leduc]. I see that he suggests the E or the A string for Michel’s first harmonic on the F# but I still maintain it’s very difficult. I have now given this series some more thought and see that mos...

Re: not specifically Finale, contrabass question

(I’ve replied to Michel’s PM at first, but I now see that his question is also here, so here’s a resume of my reply to him.) My first thought is that any use of the E (IV) string should be avoided for artificial harmonics. It’s too painful for a start to press the thumb down on the lower note and it...

I'll be pleased to help if I can. Artificial harmonics are certainly possible on the double bass, but in the higher register of course.

missing 'segno' sign

Greetings! I have recently upgraded to Adobe Acrobat X Standard to produce all my pdfs and usually it is excellent – especially when I need to combine files. Today, I noticed that it doesn’t like the ‘segno’ sign and prints ‘fi’ instead (which means ‘shame’ in Esperanto!). I’ve tried this sign in th...

Re: 1st and 2nd time brackets' spacing

Greetings Miker! Many thanks – I’ve now sorted this and the 1st and 2nd time bars look much better. It was a question of going to Document Options > Repeats > Repeat Endings like you said, but the next box to use is labelled Inset for End of Bracket. After a few experiments, I entered 0.2cm which lo...
