Re: Whole rests in non 4/4 measures SOLVED

That's odd. I often wondered about a 'simple' solution for this myself. Mainly for attaching fermatas to a whole rest in time signatures other than 4/4 or 2/2. I tried the solution miker described, but Simple Entry will not allow me to enter a whole rest in, say, 4/8, 3/8 or whatever is smaller than...

Re: Tuplet not allowing correct amount of notes

Back to the subject — sort of, Finale has a problem with tuplets, though. Try this: in speedy entry use the option to fill an incomplete measure with rests. Then create an incomplete tuplet (on a Mac: option-3 and type the number 4 twice) at the end of a measure. Exit the (incomplete) measure and se...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

Unfortunately, English is not for all of us the native language. The extend of the command of the language largely determines how subtle one can express oneself in that language, as well as how many subtleties in words one picks up from others. Please don't just assume that the words you read are al...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

If the program did exactly what I wanted all the time, how could I persuade my clients to pay me for more than opening a file, punching the notes and pressing the button? I seldom copy, and almost never overwrite when I do. See, that makes a world of difference right there: how and for what purpose...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

Double slurs and the addition of an extra unwanted slur with copied notes are two different issues, as stated in my second post in this thread. The former happens without any additional editing and in just about any sizeable (orchestral) score, the latter only once (albeit in an also somewhat sizeab...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

Reporting the problem to MakeMusic is what I can do myself, but a long history with MakeMusic taught me that has very little to no result, which is why I turn to fora like this one, only to be greeted with exactly what I wrote. Need I say more? No, the file doesn't help in this case, because I canno...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

If you just want to vent in the expectation of a return chorus of, "Yes, Finale is a piece of junk," though, you're probably going to be disappointed. Finale, as any piece of software, has room for improvement. One can only improve once one knows the limitations and imperfections. The constant prai...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

I do have the file, but the problem -of course- has long since been solved. Since all I needed do was to remove the superfluous slur, it was not all that much of a hinderance to continue working on that document. Unless a problem makes continuation impossible, I never stop to wait for an answer, nei...

Re: Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

I have never changed the default settings of the slurs, but do no notice that Finale quite often draws slurs starting and/or ending at ludicrous distances from the note (either ludicrously distant or at no distance at all) for no apparent reason. On system breaks Finale very often draws slurs throug...

Wouldn't it be great if Finale did what I wanted it to do?

I very much dislike software that makes its own decisions contrary to what I told it to do. Finale has a long and very rich history of doing whatever it pleases, regardless of the commands given. Latest example is as shown in the image: I copied (dragged and dropped) the selected two measures onto t...

Re: Boulez?

I indeed do not remember downloading and installing the Elbsound fonts, but a quick check learned that I do have the Aruvarb font (e.g.) on my system, so that must be the case. Still odd that it comes with a library for Finale that Finale can't open.
Thanks for the reminder.

Boulez?

In the Libraries folder there's a file called 'Boulez.lib'. Not sure why I never noticed it before and certainly not sure if I'll ever have any use for it, but merely out of curiosity I tried to load that library into a Finale document. I won't. Finale claims it "cannot open the selected filetype". ...

ARIA engine update (un)available

Finale tells me there is an ARIA engine update (1.958) available and asks me whether I would like to download it. Yes, please. Funny though, when I arrive at the download page, it reads: "Downloads removed as ARIA is now 64bit only. Ask your ARIA product vendors for details". Nothing on the subject ...

Re: When one in four isn't good enough

The smart shapes were drawn in scroll view. As a matter of fact, I always work in scroll view, but turn to page view for layout when the score is completed. That's when I noticed that the smart shapes weren't drawn correctly on some staves. The align vertically command is redundant since MakeMusic m...

Re: When one in four isn't good enough

That did draw the diminuendi correctly. Thank you. In other words: aligning a smart shape vertically does not align a smart shape vertically, evidently. Finale never ceases to amaze me. Still, why doesn't Finale always draw a smart shape from starting point to end point over a system break? They sho...

When one in four isn't good enough

Momentarily I'm working in a score in which Finale manages to actually draw only one in four exactly the same diminuendi correctly. Only the bassoon staff (Fg.) has the correct starting and ending point of the diminuendo. Flute and clarinet are missing the ending and oboe misses the entire beginning...

Re: Composing in Finale....Is there a more satisfying feelin

I know a composer who fired a shotgun at blank manuscript. Music concrete was composed using a tool for composing. Yes, aleatoric is (was, really) a method of composing, but that has nothing to do with Finale. Finale will never enter notes for you (nor will the lawn mower), you will have to enter t...
