string slurs to clarinet slurs
Greetings! I’ve been asked to prepare parts for clarinets (in B flat) from the 1st and 2nd violin parts and the viola part of Mozart Horn Concerto K417. I’ve just started and am wondering whether the strings’ slurs can stay as they are for the clarinet parts or whether they should be changed. If so,...

Re: toggle between layer 1 and 2
PS
Although I am grateful to michelp for reminding me of the forgotten keyboard shortcut, I must say that Mike’s method is much easier! I think my productivity has increased greatly this evening! Grateful thanks once again!

Re: rests' notation in 9/8
If I allow Finale to automatically enter the final dotted crotchet rest and then make a copy/paste, the two dotted crotchet rests are changed to a dotted minim on pasting. However, if I enter both dotted crotchet rests manually, then copy/paste does work.

Re: rests' notation in 9/8
Yes, I did go through all these different possibilities you mention before posting my question. I just thought there should be a setting to cover this. Perhaps there isn't!
Guess I'll have to keep entering manually in 9/8 instead of relying on the useful 'fill bar with rests'.

Re: rests' notation in 9/8
Good grief – I can’t see for looking as the saying goes! Sorry to be so slow.
Right, I’ve now opened the right menu and see that "allow dotted rests on compound meters".was already ticked, so I guess I’ll need another suggestion to solve my 9/8 difficulty.

Re: toggle between layer 1 and 2
Aha! This is certainly possible under TG Tools > Menu shortcuts and I’ve just (easily!) programmed F5 for layer 1 and F6 for layer 2 as you suggest. So now I have two options – yours could be better than shift > alt > layer number! I’ll run them both side-by-side and see which suits me best. Many th...

Re: rests' notation in 9/8
Thanks for this, Mike, but I can’t get it to work. I cannot find quantization settings, to allow me to check "allow dotted rests on compound meters". I’ve seen the dialog box I’m looking for in the Help pages - I need the More Quantization Settings dialog box. ‘How to get there’ tells me to ‘Choose ...

rests' notation in 9/8
Greetings again! Another difficulty. I’m in 9/8 and want Finale to automatically display the correct rests after entering say a single quaver. At the moment it gives me quaver / 2 quaver rests / dotted mimin rest. I’ve been living with this for some time and correcting it manually, but now I see tha...

Re: toggle between layer 1 and 2
Many thanks! That was the shortcut that was eluding me! I did indeed go to Finale help before seeking help from the Forum members. I didn’t think to look in ‘General’, having found this under ‘Speedy’: Move to next layer = Shift+' (apostrophe). But it didn’t work, possibly because the apostrophe on ...

toggle between layer 1 and 2
Greetings all!
Please can someone remind me of the keyboard shortcut to toggle between layers 1 and 2 in speedy entry? I used this some time ago, but now it's escaped my memory!
Thanks

Re: Finale 2012: Time Signature
Hello Inside Out It’s a little bit complicated, but here’s what I would do. a) bar 1 - enter 5/8 time signature b) bar 2 – enter 4/8 time signature (although looking at the beaming in the 4/8 bars, it might be best to use 2/4) c) copy bars 1 and 2 for as many times as you need the 5/8 and 4/8 sequen...

Motet - I've cleared everything in the filter and just clicked on Secondary Beam Breaks as you mentioned. Just tried it again with a different document, and it's still working!! Finale 2011.

Greetings after a short absence
I am now back at my computer after a period out of town. I am delighted to note that the scrolling playback problem previously reported has cured itself during my absence! Another Finale mystery?

Re: Dealing with Multiple Simultaneous Tempos
Hello again It’s a while since I completed this score but I do remember it took a long time and tested both me and Finale to our absolute limits! Basically, I used an Excel spreadsheet to plot the location to 3 decimal places for every item that was entered into the score (notes, rests, barlines…). ...

Re: scrolling playback pointer
I cannot seem to find the FINALE.ini and FINMIDI.ini files. I’ve allowed hidden files to show; I’ve navigated through AppData > Roaming > MakeMusic > Finale 2011 and now have this list with no sign of any .ini files: Configuration Files; FinaleScript; Font Annotation; Human Playback; Libraries; MIDI...

Re: scrolling playback pointer
No, I haven't tried that. I believe I did it some time ago to try to solve a different problem. I'll have to check back and look at the instructions. I'm not sure about there being two .ini files, though. I may need more help on this, but will see what I can do for now. Thanks!

Re: scrolling playback pointer
Yes, everything's been working fine up to now! This is the first time I've come across the non-scrolling playback and it's a bit of a problem as I use that feature a lot for proofreading (well 'proof listening'!).

Re: scrolling playback pointer
Thanks Ron - I did mention in my first post that I'd tried a reboot and it didn't work.
Now things have gone from bad to worse. I’ve tried playing back a different file and all I get is one note! But the earlier file still plays back (but without the pointer).

Re: Dealing with Multiple Simultaneous Tempos
If it helps, you might have a look at the score I produced in Finale of Evgeni Kostitsyn’s Symphony no 6: www.kostitsyn.org/EvgeniKostitsyn-Symphony6.pdf . This was a complicated polytempo score. It’s laid out for performance but playback wasn’t considered!

scrolling playback pointer
Greetings! Scrolling playback is selected in Playback controls as it’s always been but for some reason the pointer is not showing today during playback and the window doesn’t move to the next few bars. I’ve done a reboot as advised on the previous forum, but to no avail. Anybody any thoughts? Andreo...

Re: slightly OT - 3 beaming choices
It's the 2nd corno di bassetto part from Mozart's Gran Partita - Adagio. Most probably will be beat in 8. I'm tasked with transposing the parts for alto clarinet as we're lacking corni di bassetto players in deepest rural Lincolnshire!

Re: slightly OT - 3 beaming choices
Thank you all for these votes – very interesting! So far, B is the clear winner with 4 votes. Perhaps I should now divulge that A is Finale’s default setting; B is from Breitkopf & Härtel and C comes from Bärenreiter. Certainly interesting that C gets no votes so far, despite the high regard for tha...

In terms of readability, which of the 3 possibilities in the attached file is the better beaming choice?
