Re: grace note / slur question
When I suggested a little slur for the grace notes, I was meaning (but didn't state, apologies for that) that that slur should slur the two grace notes to the first normal note. I expect the use of one slur to cover everything is also perfectly correct, but two slurs, one slurring the grace notes to...

Re: grace note / slur question
I would have a separate little slur for the grace notes. In this instance I'd choose to have triple beams for the grace notes, but I don't know of an established rule that clearly specifies the number of beams.

Re: squished notes after merge
The first thing to do is to unlock systems in each part. Select All then Shift/Command/L. Next Update Layout - Select All then Command/U. That might sort it.

Thanks both.
A Staff Style is maybe a good idea. I'll experiment further.

Pitched cues in unpitched percussion part?
What is the easy way to add pitched instrument cues into an unpitched linked percussion part? If I try my usual method of adding cues to layer 4 via full TGTools, I get over-low notes (without accidentals) which don't transpose easily (even if I change to a non-percussion clef) &c &c, but I suspect ...

Re: Dorico 2 is out
And maybe Finale will find a way to to compete with & even surpass these developments in Dorico…
FWIW, at 77 I'm not anticipating taking the trouble to learn Dorico, unless it becomes near enough unavoidable (eg if Finale goes out of business).

Re: Mac 10.13.5?
Well, I've up-dated to 10.13.5 and Finale does seem to be working exactly as before. I became a bit worried when I heard a thunderstorm rumbling away about a dozen miles from here, in case there was a power cut or power surges in the middle of the up-date, but none of that happened. (I do have anti-...

Mac 10.13.5?
Has anyone tried the latest High Sierra up-date with Finale yet? It's apparently more than 2 GB, but with luck doesn't include anything that will have an adverse effect on Finale. I think it was the 10.5.8 up-date and Finale 2007 that caused major authorization problems for me and quite a few others...

Re: How to describe and notate...
I know opera singers do this sort of thing all the time, especially as a way of negitiating a big jump, but I don't recall seeing the grace-note notation Zuill posted, which is why I asked. Having just watched & listened to the Otello DVD mentioned above, there are very few of these vocal portament...

Re: some thoughts and q
It's still Finale 25, although the .5 up-date improved some details. We await news of a new version, but there's no sign of one yet. FYI this recent thread https://www.finaleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16614 shows, amongst other things, how I solved an unexpected disparity between the positions of...

Re: How to describe and notate...
Something similar can be seen in the operas of Verdi, Puccini and others. Do you have an example? In the next few days I'm aiming to watch the recently issued DVD with Jonas Kaufmann as Otello (from the ROH with Pappano conducting). I'm expecting to hear quite a few of these, so will then check whe...

Re: How to describe and notate...
If you're very, very careful with the term, and absolutely clear that it's never a sliding or glissando, it is actually a form of vocal portamento (ie a ‘carrying’ of the voice).miker wrote:Thanks, guys. Does it have a particular name?

Re: How to describe and notate...
I do this from time to time and usually notate it as has Zuill. Something similar can be seen in the operas of Verdi, Puccini and others.

Re: This notation: how in Finale?
There's a Carl Maria von Weber horn piece where we sing into the horn to create three-part chords with the difference tone that's produced. It's rather difficult because acoustically strange things happen in the throat. I wonder if the trombone is any easier. The particular combination of sung and ...

Re: This notation: how in Finale?
Just a tiny up-date. I've decided that it looks better with the ‘sing’ noteheads reduced to 80%. This wasn't relevant in my MS score (and I don't have the hand-copied part), but it definitely looks better in Finale. I've also taken the opportunity to make the solo bass trombone part a little less de...

Re: This notation: how in Finale?
Hurray! I've found a solution to the wandering articulations. Not entering them as expressions (although that did seem to help a little) but by not only hiding the layer 3 noteheads, but also resizing them to 1%. That did the trick. It's astonishing what one seems to be able to find out by trial and...

Re: This notation: how in Finale?
This is my interim result. It was quite fiddly, using three layers and JW Change. One unexpected problem was that in the PDF (shown here) the +o etc articulations were noticeably too far to the right when the third layer (with noteheads & ledger lines hidden) was in use if they were in the right pla...

This notation: how in Finale?
How might it be best to do this in Finale? (It's from the 1983 piece, mentioned in a recent post, which I wrote for myself to play on Bass Trombone accompanied by brass band.) I think I can possibly work out something using three layers, but all ideas are welcome. I already have articulations for +o...

Brass Band template
I rarely write for brass band, but this is the first page of the manuscript score of a little piece I wrote in 1983 for myself to play on the bass trombone together with a 4th section brass band. As far as I know, this is more or less the standard brass band line up, so I was surprised that Finale d...

Anyway, glad it's working for you. It's now working correctly from Services. I think my Finder was playing up yesterday, but it's now OK and not likely to repeat that particular misbehaviour.
