Re: Piano L and R hands

I wouldn't use a treble clef in the lower staff, and would definitely go for cross staff.
The number of ledger lines does not warrant using a treble clef.

this "L/R" thing is more confusing and difficult to read than anything. you've added another "line" to the music than the actual musical notes.

Re: Ties between enharmonically altered notes

I' personally fond of the practice of using the same note (as in the example above, and E# tied to an E#), but then placing a grace note-sized notehead (no stem) of the new enharmonic spelling (in this case an F natural) immediately after the second tied note. I am posting an image of the effect, th...

Re: Tie Endpoints: Vertically Offset if Pitch Changes

the problem isn't the ties/slur issue. TIES are for the same note. the 2nd iteration of that note will NOT attack, it will simply hold the 1st note longer by that value. this is the function of a tie. a half note, tied to a quarter note has the duration of the combined notes: a dotted half note. a S...

Re: Sustained notes

remember to compare with the decay of the sampled piano, not a real piano.
regardless of what you write or how you play with the Aria player, you MAY never get a long decay on that piano sample.
it's a consideration.

Re: Sustained notes

it could be one of two things: 1) yes, you might have reached that instrument's polyphony limit (which can be adjusted in the Aria player if I recall) 2) many instruments have a normal decay, so you may simply have reached the point where that instrument won't sound anymore because it's beyond the l...

Re: dead horse

oh! one thing I absolutely love about Dorico, though I'm not at that point in the piece I'm transcribing yet, is the ability to write a completely measure-free cadenza without clunky workarounds, hidden barlines and time signatures, etc...

by the way I only use HP playback. especially since they sped it up and it no longer takes a minute to load up all the information like in the old days.

Re: dead horse

I eventually figured it out... it's the PROGRAM that sets the 2nd partial "by default", and not a music theory concept. if you look at the harmonics function in the program itself, you just choose 2nd, 3rd, 4th, whatever, as the harmonic you want (and it does automatically make the 4th partial the d...

Re: NotePerformer Ignoring Slurs During Mid-score Playback

Sorry Mike, I hadn't noticed your question. I have not had too many problems with stopping and starting playback from anywhere in a score. Although I have to admit that every once in a while a file will have difficulty scanning back to see whether the contrabass should be arco or pizz. That type of ...

Re: dead horse

ok, since there are some Dorico users here, or dabblers at least, can someone explain to me what this means? I looked up "violin harmonic" in Dorico's help file, and this paragraph came up: Artificial harmonics represent the second partial by default. They are shown with a diamond notehead indicatin...

Re: Piano pedal question

you could place the rest in the top staff but pull it down "visually" so that it is below the bottom staff, if you want to use a whole note rest in the left hand staff.

Re: dead horse

And there is in Finale? I just tried this with Finale 27 and, at least on my set-up, it works the same as Dorico. Maybe I don't understand what you are referring to. In Finale, ctrl+page down brings you to the next page, ctrl+page up brings you to the previous page. I posted a bit higher that there...

...but also to defend why it is necessary to fix it. THIS has been annoying. There have been many great people responding with helpful suggestions or comments, but there appears to be a rather stridently "anti-change" sub-group who react as though every criticism of Dorico is a personal affront. Th...

Re: dead horse

aha, ok, so my better half (a computer programmer) has been helping me with this issue, and we appear to have found a minor bug in Dorico that ONLY affects horizontal scrolling. It seems that the amount of "free space" for the "thumb" in the scroll bar MUST be equal to the perceived size of the thum...

Re: dead horse

No, not wrong. The Home and End keys bring you to the top and bottom of the single page on which you are working. There is no feature at all in Dorico that brings you automatically to the top of the subsequent page, unless you change to the equivalent of Finale's Scroll view. While you're busy defen...

Re: dead horse

this is amusing.... in Dorico, there is NO function at all for passing from one page to the next without actually opening a dialogue box and typing in the page number. with Finale I just hit ctrl+Page Down to go to the next page. I can't seem to identify any function in Dorico at all that would even...

Re: NotePerformer Ignoring Slurs During Mid-score Playback

I don't know, I never use the playback buttons.
I've just redefined a keyboard shortcut to "start playback = Alt+P" and "stop playback = Alt+S".

It's become such a habit for me that I keep forgetting that I can spacebar click also.

Re: NotePerformer Ignoring Slurs During Mid-score Playback

as far as I know, spacebar+clicking does not invoke HumanPlayback. it's a dry playback, with no interpretation effects. If you set playback to be "starting at the leftmost bar", then you can simply play from wherever with the playback transport. spacebar+click is why NotePerformer is ignoring your s...

O/T accent notation question

I'd like to know if, generally speaking, string players see a difference between the two types of accents in my enclosed image, or if one is more likely to be seen in string music, while the other used more for other instruments? I've seen mentions of the difference being the 1st accent is either so...

Re: dead horse

unfortunately, it would seem import of XML files into some other music programs isn't always a success.
I tried importing my violin concerto from Finale into Dorico, and it got the first movement right (mostly), and around half the 2nd movement, with absolutely none of the 3rd movement.

Re: dead horse

Surprisingly, Dorico does NOT do cutaway score!!!

In the string piece I'm using as my "test subject" with Dorico, there is a small section that requires cutaway staves. This isn't as yet possible with Dorico, while it's a breeze with Finale.

Re: dead horse

I decided to try DORICO with an XML import of a score for strings. Weirdly, the imported version has no notes starting shortly before the end of the 2nd movement all the way through to the end of the piece. I don't know if this is an artifact of XML export from Finale, a fault in XML itself, or Dori...

Re: dead horse

First off: news about my particular issue. There's a work-around, but it feels clunky to me, and is problematic for parts. However, apparently this functionality WILL be added in the upcoming "version 4" of Dorico. ************************* John, to answer your question: it's all new to me, so I kn...
