Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

And, dtoub, I agree with you 100%. As far as: I suspect that other than metatools and better support for cutaway scores (which I have only rarely used because it’s just so 1960’s), I’m not sure what Finale has that Dorico doesn’t. Actually, Dorico has a lot of issues for someone who "wants to do it ...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

The problem is not that Finale is complex in itself, because the present manual takes care of that. The problem is what is not in Finale and the manual and has to be found in a myriad of sources and brought into the mix from outside to make a complete engraving tool. The whole unstated point of this...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

My sincerest apology, ebiggs1. You were clear, but somehow I misread your post and thought you were referring to students in your class googling. What I should have said was that many of us, including me, have to google for Finale information because there is no central site that contains all the ba...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

I never said that music teachers were not professionals. I've been a music teacher for 47 years and consider myself a professional. My father, my sister, my brother-in-law, my nephew's wife, an aunt and an uncle are or were music teachers. All professionals. Also, I didn't write that quote about Dor...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

On Teacher Development days I have taught how to use Finale. It is our district notation software. We have 12 music teachers. I asked one time how many used or read the Finale manual. The answer was none. The prefered answer was I Google it or I ask you (me). Hey guys and gal I have no desire to pr...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

Perhaps a reasonable (and environmentally conscious) compromise could be just a better organized and more comprehensive online manual than what currently exists. The way that old Finale boxed set was organized was wonderful since it had a detailed manual, a reference guide to show various examples,...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

I have had to learn a lot of not particularly user-friendly software from scratch in my career, and I see great benefit to good manuals. There are indeed people who don't look at the manuals, but I think that's a big mistake. There was a lot of dissatisfaction when Dorico first came out without a c...

Re: using "a piacere"......or......?

There is also molto espressivo to distinguish it further. But freely in tempo as suggested by RimasG might be best if the playing around with some of the notes is more a rhythmic effect than a dynamic or emotional effect. It is also possible that there could be away of notating this passage without ...

Re: "Advanced" Finale manual needed

I could not agree more. Thanks, AnneMillington. Finale as used by advanced users is really a collection of various tools. Information about this is scattered all over the place. It all needs to be brought together, at least conceptually. A manual would be one way to do that. What other power user w...

"Advanced" Finale manual needed

I think that a carefully-indexed online manual that includes all the plugins, add-ons, workarounds and hints would be very helpful to users. It could be assembled from the various posts on several websites by the expert users on this site. Since Finale development is now at a glacial pace, it would ...

Re: graphics disappearing

You are certainly in the discerning category, Anders. But I will be using them in publishing my current project, because I want to keep it all in Finale. and I am willing to compromise a little. I don't have the energy to lay out everything again in Affinity. Maybe in the future. The small footnote ...

Not quite useless. I find them acceptable for small reduced musical examples in footnotes. But the more discerning might not.

Re: graphics disappearing

I think I found one potential workaround; although we shouldn't need a workaround, we all know that. In Shape Designer, click Create Misc. Expression. Then click the add graphic button (instead of using the Graphics Tool in the Tool Palette) and then add a graphic. That way, your graphic is added a...

Re: Template Help

I suggest taking a look at some well-engraved unaccompanied choral music to see what is standard in terms of spacing and margins. Having so little room between the systems (first page, the second page is better) is not good for reading. Now that it is clear that this is a multipage arrangement, fewe...

Re: Template Help

So what I have could work if I have 4 systems on the first page and the 5 systems on the second page? Very iffy and certainly not if you keep what you've got. What you need to do is reduce the size of the music, either by reducing the whole image on the page as N. suggested or by reducing the staff...

Re: Template Help

I fail to see how a template can help. You can certainly narrow the space between the staves on the last three systems of the Chorus, especially since your hairpins are much too wide. So that would allow more space between the systems and the second page would work as it stands. But the first page i...

Re: Tuplet weirdness

Thanks, BuonTempi. That would explain it. It does seem to be OK except for the issue above. So I can live with it just for editing older files in Finale 25. I'll have to move on to Finale 27 for newer files. Finale 25 only exists as Intel code, so it can only run in Rosetta on an M-series Mac. Of co...

Re: Template Help

The OP may need the large space between the staves for the lyrics. I would first put in the lyrics and then experiment with the staff size to allow more space between the systems and to see if it will fit on two facing pages If not, it will need to go on three pages.

Re: Tuplet weirdness

I am getting the distinct impression that no one else has my problem. But then maybe I am the only one running Finale 25 on a M1 Mac, which I think is the problem, because the problem doesn't exist on my older Intel Mac. So the question is, is it possible to run Finale 25 in Rosetta 2? I don't see t...

Re: System Spacing Issue

It looks like you dragged the systems apart by hand using the Page Layout tool. Instead use top menu Page Layout>Systems>Edit margins and put in margin values that keep all the systems on one page. Set Distance Between Systems to 0. I respaced it here:

Re: a lost file

No command line for me. No way. Way too scary. Yes, "Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die." (from "The Charge of the Finale Users") Dorico is enticing, but there dangers also lurk. For example, Dorico users have been asking for quite a while for the ability hide cautionary time signat...

Re: a lost file

I just tried a Spotlight search to see how long it would take to find a file in the templates folder. You're right. It's not great at that. In fact, neither Spotlight nor a Finder Search will find any files in the Finale templates folder. I tried modifying the search criteria in the Finder search (w...

Re: a lost file

Glad you found it. The first time it saved a file in Templates by default, it didn't make sense to me either. The templates folder would be the least likely place you would want to save a new file. Better it should save to the desktop by default. My wife, an experienced programmer, thinks some sort ...

Re: a lost file

I am running OS 12.6 also. I've had a file not show where it was supposed to be according to a Spotlight search or not actually be in a mail folder that it says it's in a Mail search. But they always turn up eventually and mysteriously. I hope yours does too. Very sorry about that.
