Re: water mark

… …Perhaps I need to create an installer...! I've found where I was going wrong. I was putting them in ‘Services,’ but it seems I needed to put them in ‘PDF Services.’ Having done that, they have appeared via the Finder with Option or via right click. I'll experiment tomorrow (I'm somewhat drained ...

Yes, both the latest version 10 and at least as far back as version 6 are 64 bit, according to my System Information.

Re: Finale 2012: How to write

I did this by first entering the bass notes lower than wanted (Es in this case) and then dragging them upwards in Speedy Entry using the cursor and trackpad.

PS I'm not sure I like the vertical alignment, but that can be adjusted (if you agree) with special tools.

Re: Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

It's turned out to be a bit of a non-problem, as each of the short cadenzas for Bsn 1 in this little (4 min) piece can be made to fit on one system.

(Parts are now complete with the Bsn 1 cadenzas cued into the other three parts.)

Re: water mark

I did this a few days ago with PDFpen 10.0.1 from Smile (I think also available from the App Store). Not free, but not expensive. It took a while (2 or 3 minutes) to apply the watermark to all several hundred pages of the score, but it only required the one instruction and then got on with things at...

Re: Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

Following advice from the notat.io forum from John Ruggero to look at Gould p 610, this is how I now have it (some fine tuning required).

I changed the Staff Style to cover all four bars and not to ‘display rests in empty measures.’ In addition, I created a whole bar rest as an expression.

Re: Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

… … …What did you do to create it, and to position it where it is now? I suppose you could use the Smart Shape Tool, and create it as a (zero thickness) custom line with the whole rest centered between the endpoints. I did nothing clever! After concealing the barlines, I hid the whole bar rests in ...

Where & how to place whole bars rest during cadenza?

What is the best solution for placement of the whole bar rest plus pausa under the mini cadenza for bassoon 1? Is it OK where it is, or should it be more to the left? If so, how best to move it? I used JW conceal barlines for the cadenza and blank notation in the three lower staves for the concealed...

Re: Finale 2012: Moving staves

Rather than the Staff Tool, I'd suggest using the Page Layout Tool. Once in that tool click somewhere in the system (the 5 staves grouped together you want to move) and drag down (using mouse/trackpad) by the amount wanted. Or use the Page Layout Menu > Systems > Edit Margins…

Re: Thank you Finale

FWIW As a composer I usually (not always) like to work from freely expressive and often interweaving lines, out of which some (not too much!) rhythmic and harmonic discipline later grows. As a result, my preliminary work is usually done in manuscript: Finale ties one (or me at least) down to a presc...

Re: Piece for 4 bassoons, score manager sounds?

… … …let me know what you think worked for you; I'd be interested to learn. Out of curiosity, I'm now trying 4 x Bassoon Player 1 for experimental playback, although I'm not sure how well this might evoke the reality as described by the players themselves. I had a message today from the quartet (fo...

Re: Piece for 4 bassoons, score manager sounds?

Thank you both for the responses. I don't think (not certain) that the players will have any interest in a playback file. As for me, being mildly ancient (77) and having started composing in childhood, I compose in the first instance in pencil before making my fair copy in Finale: thus playback is m...

Piece for 4 bassoons, score manager sounds?

I'm sketching a piece for four bassoons. Is this arrangement (see screenshot) of the four sounds the most useful for playback via GIFF? I don't rely on playback and I don't think the four players will expect computer generated sound, but I'd like to get this right if I can. The piece is for four equ...

Re: Complete failure of playback after High Sierra

Bummer! Under Device Set Up, see what Output Source is Selected, set Sample rate to 96 and be sure the Buffer is 4096. Lower settings cause stuttering! That's it! I've no idea why, but when I installed High Sierra the Buffer Size in Finale's Audio Setup reduced to the minimum 32. As soon as I put i...

Complete failure of playback after High Sierra (solved)

This is distinctly odd. After up-grading from OS Sierra to High Sierra, in all files, including new ones not from template (ie new via setup wizard), whether GIFF or SoftSynth, HP or not, scrolling or not, playback consists of the odd detached stutter, or of nothing at all. If there are stutters the...

Re: Crash Cymbals

How they are used and their name can be different. The fact is the ones that are "crashed" together are called clash cymbals. A crash cymbal sits on a stand in a drum set. I know how the term has come to be used, still doesn't change the fact. Here in the UK, I think we'd certainly interpret these ...

Re: moving notes up and down the staff

One possibility, although it may not be the best, might be while in the Speedy Frame to click and hold on each note in turn whose pitch you wish to move up or down and while holding the cursor on the note to drag it up or down as appropriate. I suspect this would rapidly become tedious if you're doi...

Re: Question about staff names in divisi staves

Do you want something like this? While in the Staff Tool the full name for the bassoons was done by applying a negative baseline shift (Text submenu) to the word ‘Bassoons’ and returning that to 0 for the ‘1’ and then typing ‘2’ on the next line. The horns were done with ‘Horns’ as a Group Name rath...

Re: Low G doesn't sound in some GPO5 trumpet sounds

Why write so low for tpt? Have you heard a tpt player play down there? That's Trombone and Horn territory. Tpts will likely sound weak and wobbly down there. There's some very dramatic low trumpet writing in the symphonic & operatic repertoire (eg in both Shostakovich & Prokofiev). It's quite a dif...

Re: Looking for an authoritative resource to settle a disput

Just adding my support to what everyone else has said: a sharp before a note, irrespective of key signature or anything else, is just that - a sharp. It cannot accumulate a key signature sharp to become a double sharp.
