Thanks for the replies.
Is it the general consensus that when slurs and ties are drawn almost identically, all repeated notes should be considered as tied -- unless there is some element that strongly suggests an exception?

How to tell Slurs from Ties in older engravings
In older music when some notes are common to both chords, I sometimes find it difficult to tell if the common notes are connected by slurs or by ties, as in the examples. 1. If there differences that distinguish the slurs and ties in the examples, what reliably tells them apart? 2. If they cannot be...

Re: Quick recognition of suggested edits
I haven't found a good solution from within Finale, but it could be done using a PDF copy. The example was done in the free Foxit reader. After opening the PDF of the Finale file, I used Comment > Area Highlight to draw attention to the edit. Then I used the Typewriter to enter a text note explainin...

Re: Measure numbers wrong
Measure 42 is not included in the measure numbering. Select the Measure Tool, then, with the mouse over one of the staves of measure 42, double click. The Measure Attributes window opens. In the lower right, click the option "Include in measure numbering." This is how it is done in Windows, I don't ...

Re: Accidental
If I read the description correctly, the two b-flats actually represent pitches an octave apart. If this is so, then in support of Motet's recommendation, here is what Gould says in Behind Bars (p. 76) "An accidental holds good for the duration of a bar. It applies only to the pitch at which it is w...

Re: German eszett in Finale lyrics font
The problem is that the Finale Lyrics font does not have an eszett. The slot 223 is empty. You can also check this by opening a Microsoft Word document and typing Alt+0223. The ß appears (as it just did here). Still in Word, select the symbol and change the font to Finale Lyrics. The ß becomes an em...

Re: Get rid of "Score" in PDF
Does your Finale file have "Score" visible in the file? When I tried exporting directly to PDF (or printing to another PDF engine), "Score" only showed up when it was visible in the original file. It appears to be added by default by the Engraver Style (and possibly others; I didn't check).

Re: Grace notes won't fit
Another solution is to temporarily isolate the measure on its own system. Usually that will space out the notes, making it easy to insert additional notes (grace or regular).

Re: Custom line tool question
Another solution if you just want to import a particular element is to copy a measure that has it (in another file). Then in an empty measure, paste it in the target file. You can immediately erase or delete the measure's contents. The expression, articulation, or smart line will be retained in the ...

Re: Music Spacing Library in Maestro Default template
I formatted a file using the Masestro template. Then I sequentially loaded the various Music Spacing library files and reformated. Between each library file, I reverted to the Meastro template formatting. At least when I did it, none of the library music spacing choices duplicated the spacing of the...

Re: Music Spacing Library in Maestro Default template
My definition of music spacing for this issue is what Finale includes in a Music Spacing library file. My assumption was that the Maestro font template used one of those spacings, When I couldn't get the library files to duplicate the spacing in the template, I began to wonder if the template used a...

Re: Music Spacing Library in Maestro Default template
My interest comes from wanting to know with precision what music spacing Finale decided would be in their Maestro default template. It is because it did not seem to match any of the music spacing library choices and is not easy to determine in other ways that I became intrigued.

Music Spacing Library in Maestro Default template
Can someone tell me what the spacing option is that comes in the template "Maestro Font Default.ftmx." When I tried sequentially using the various options in the Music Spacing Library, I could not get any of them to duplicate it.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Re: slightly OT - 3 beaming choices
I prefer A or B. I like B best, possibly because it was the way I have seen these patterns engraved for so long. It conveys the meaning without the business of breaking the secondary beam as A (quite correctly) does.

Automatic loigin not working
I"m using Firefox and checked to be automatically logged in on future visits. I'm never logged in automatically. I had no problem logging in automatically with the old MakeMusic Forums. I've not changed any browser settings. I prefer to keep using Firefox and will login as needed if there is no solu...

Re: Posted this in the General section... ads??
I find I just don't notice the ads. I also have AdBlock but turned it off for this site since a blocked ad usually does not provide revenue to the site. After writing the above, I realized I'm not really sure if just having me see the ad provides revenue to the site or whether I have to click the ad...

Re: Four-hand music
I use a method similar to that described in this thread but my process is a bit different. The advantage of this process is letting Finale determine how many measures will fit on each pair of pages. This is all long to say, but rather quick to do. I start with a score with both the primo and secondo...

Re: Quotation marks convert to "smart quotes"
In both the elision script and the hard space script, the caret (^) has the sole purpose of being a placeholder for where the elision slur or hard space should be inserted. It is an arbitrary character chosen because it is easy to type and would rarely, if ever, appear naturally in lyrics.

Re: Quotation marks convert to "smart quotes"
Here's a script for Finale 2012 and later (due to font changes affecting the curly quotes). It also adds a hard space for any carets (^) entered in the lyrics. There is also a variant for adding elision slurs as described in the User Manual. Sorry the entry is so long. //FINALE SCRIPT FOLLOWS—DO NOT...

I originally registered here using the same User Name that I had created for the MakeMusic Forum.
