Contemporary Music Scores

Use the "hide barlines and time signatures" method. In that way you can control, exactly how many notes you get in each system. To enter a note that exceeds across a barline: In this example let's say that you want to enter a half note on beat 4 in a 4/4 measure: 1. Enter the half note as a tuplet: ...

...since rick is located in Florida, he is probably using the american keyboard layout. In the american keyboard layout Mac users can type character #212 with Option-]. For Windows users it's Alt-0212 (type the number characters on the numeric keypad), regardless of the language keyboard layout. Peter

Harmony Assistant and Melody Assistant indeed sound like interesting alternatives to Finale.

alternate Simple Entry method

Finale 2004 has the desired feature in Simple Entry Tool.
Quoting from the PDF manual for Finale 2004's Simple Entry Tool:

"With the caret active, play a note or chord on a MIDI keyboard to enter pitch(es) of the chosen duration."

Although Finale itself doesn't have these options, at least some of them are available through third party software. To get MP3 files with Finale 2003 or earlier, you can export from Finale as a MIDI file. And from the MIDI file it's possible (with third party software) to create an audio file that ...

Importing from Mac to PC - Finale 2004

Two ideas: 1) When importing from Mac, make sure that the files names end with the .MUS extension. 2) Before transferring the .MUS file, compress it as a .ZIP file. Mac OS X 10.3 Panther can create .ZIP files (Look in the Finder's File menu). The .ZIP file format is a common file format in Windows, ...

Fingering Chart

Finale's Chord Tool has a Fretboard Editor that can be used to create woodwind fingering diagrams.

With the Fretboard Editor you can easily create vertical fingering diagrams.

If you, however, want the fingering diagrams to be horizontal, it's back to "good old Shape Designer".

One quarter tone

Youssef, You ask "How can I have a standard sharp raising a 1/2-tone file?" I think that you misunderstand me. I wrote "a standard sharp raising a 1/2-tone". It's not a special file. A standard sharp raises the pitch a 1/2-tone. You can have a standard sharp in any Finale file. To put a standard sha...

Since you right-click, I suppose that you are using Finale for Windows. In this example, let's say that you have a standard sharp raising a 1/2-tone, and you want to change that sharp to a 1/4-tone sharp. 1. Switch to Special Tools Tool. 2. (Left-)Click the Accidental Mover Tool. 3. (Left-)Click the...

If it's only one quarter-tone, you might just as well enter a standard accidental and edit it: Switch to Special Tools Tool. Click the Accidental Mover Tool. When you click in the staff, you will get a handle on every accidental in that measure. Context-click (Windows: right-click ; Macintosh: ctrl-...

Quarter tones, how can I get them??

Yes, Finale can do quartertones. I suppose that your problem is the layout, not the playback. There are step by step instructions below. Come back here, if you are having problems with the playback (the playback depends on your playback device). How to set up a quartertone key signature. Key Signatu...

In Finale versions before Finale 2004 there is only one way:
Save as a MIDI file, and use third party software to create an mp3 file from the MIDI file.

In Finale 2004 you can also save as a .wav file, and then use third party software to create an mp3 file from the .wav file.

Your question is a bit unclear. Please explain what you are trying to do. Finale can export as MIDI (.mid format), thus enabling MIDI instruments to play the notes. This is done from the File menu. I can think of at least two other ways to do this: 1) Use the Resize tool to make the first system smaller (if desired), then use the Page Layout tool to center this system at the top of the page. 2) Create a Finale file of only one measure with the appropriate number of beats and not displaying a t...
