Re: Unhandled exception caught

Someone will respond who is much better informed about this than me, but as far as I understand it Finale 2011 doesn't work correctly on High Sierra. ie You may need to up-date Finale to the current version to get round this.

Re: New MacBook for Finale: Air or Pro?

I have one of the 12in Retina MacBooks with 8GB memory and 512GB storage. It seems to work very well with Finale 25.5 and can be connected to a large portrait orienting monitor, an Apple Superdrive and various other peripherals. However, it does need adaptors to connect to almost anything, and throu...

No! Mine are various key combinations, as in my screenshot, none involving the F1–12 keys.

Re: Passing from PC to MAC Finale

Greetings... is there any way of establishing this shortcut on a Mac (10.13.1) running Finale 25 ? Show active layer only : SHIFT+ALT+S — which does not function. You can set up a shortcut of your choice in System>Keyboard>App Shortcuts (see screenshot), taking care that it is not already assigned ...

Re: Independent expression assignment

This may set you in the right direction, although it may be a little different in Windows. On a Mac with UK keyboard you press the grave accent ` key while moving the expression. That ought to do it anyway, but it may depend on how you assigned the multi-stave expression.

Re: Finale 25 - what exactly is different from the previous?

So far MM tech has been of no help whatsoever. Maybe they don't know their product. They aren't doing their job and I've been letting them know. I get the usual runaround that it's Microsoft's problem, which so far hasn't been the case. It's all been in Finale. The product isn't working as advertis...

I have in the past had a few glisses which have behaved liked this and printed all over the place in PDF. Unfortunately, I can't remember the solution, let alone the cause, but it was correctable.

Re: cue sized courtesy accidentals

I hate to be difficult, but as a performer I would strongly advise against using smaller cautionary accidentals. It makes it very easy to confuse sharps and naturals while reading, especially under less-than-ideal lighting conditions.… … Which leads indirectly to something which sometimes concerns ...

Re: combination of normal notation and x note heads

The sometimes snag with that method can be that in a crowded score one is bit liable to select other things instead of a part bar, such as slurs, hairpins &c, which can become a bit frustrating. Another way to select a part bar using the selection tool is first to select the whole bar, then to use s...

No, they are now staying as I want. However, something to do with MIDI data might possibly have been the original cause, even though all is now apparently OK.

In Speedy Entry, enter two separate pitches and then drag the ‘wrong’ note up or down to the correct pitch. They ought then to show side by side. I expect there's an equivalent in Simple Entry. Just a thought: if I had inadvertently clicked on Reset Panning under the MIDI/AUDIO menu, could that conceivably have had the effect described above? Mixer has changed volume settings without my input

In September last year, I exported an audio file from a Finale 2014.5 score for substantial vocal and orchestral forces. In order to make the balance acceptable I made numerous adjustments via the Mixer and/or Score Manager to the various instrumental and vocal channels (some GIFF, some SoftSynth). ...

Re: What's stopping you from upgrading to F25?

FWIW I've been editing a couple of fairly large (2,000–4,000 bars, 50–70 staves) vocal and orchestral scores in F 25.4 without problems, except the need to relaunch from time to time when things begin to slow after Finale has been open for two hours or so. These scores were originally created by me ...

As to Garritan, I have the volume in Audio Units turned up above 100 (usually c. 130) for both the master volume and the ARIA units. That seems to bring it to normal level. Ha! This is what I ended up with (see screenshot) trying to get an approximately realistic balance for playback of an opera sc...

Re: System scaling

Elaine Gould on page 483 of her book Behind Bars recommends that piano staves are within a height range of 6.5mm to 7mm, with a maximum ‘less frequently’ used range of 6mm to 7.4mm. I think Finale's default may be 7.2mm.

Re: No beams on notes for singers in musicals

FWIW I sometimes use ‘beam to lyrics’ for recitative, but not elsewhere. Apart from anything else, this immediately separates the look of somewhat free recit. from the look of expressive legato. However, this is probably irrelevant in the world of musicals.
