Re: Contra Bass or Double Bass?
Anyone mentioned "bass viol", the granddaddy of them all? Also, Violone, and bass violin, although bass violin doesn't seem correct since I don't think the contrabass is part of the violin family. I always think it's funny that "Violoncello" means "Little Violone", and of course Violone mean "Big V...

Re: version for Apple silicon?
I'm more than a little dismayed to find that the OS plunked the app in the Trash for me saying "Finale.app is damaged and can't be opened." I had the same error when I migrated the contents of my old Mac onto my new one (including Finale). The OS will render an app 'damaged' if it is modified in an...

Re: Error Notice
So the problem is with the iPhone (!) and Continuity Camera, whatever that is. It's basically using your iPhone as a webcam for your Mac. Here's MM's support page about the problem: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/10852042413207 Ironically, I don't have an option for CC in my Settin...

Re: from Finale to Logic Pro X
About the only thing I can contribute is that Logic can import MusicXML, as well as MIDI; and you may find that one provides more useful/complete data than the other.

Re: favorite font for lyrics
The two main factors are: legibility at small sizes, and a relatively narrow width, to avoid the syllables affecting the note spacing. And, of course, it has to match (or complement) the font styles of your other text elements -- expressions, tempi, and "page furniture". Serif fonts are usually cons...

Re: Where does one buy older versions of finale?
My mistake, I meant that I am running on Sierra, 10.12.6 and I can't upgrade to a newer OSX because my computer is too old. System requirements state that V27 only works with 10.14 and newer. It is possible to install newer OS versions than supported, using third-party fixes. https://dortania.githu...

Re: Where does one buy older versions of finale?
Once a new version is released, they don't sell older versions on the site. It's always been this way, and I've never understood why. It's hard to justify selling something that you're not 'supporting', in terms of meaningful bug fixes and compatibility updates. And updating two version of Finale i...

Re: Where does one buy older versions of finale?
I have a mac that can't upgrade past osx 12.6, so it seems I cannot buy finale V27 which is osx 14 or later. You are confusing OS 10.14 (Mojave) with OS 14 (which is not released yet!!). MakeMusic's system requirements state that Finale 27.3 will run on Mojave (10.14), Catalina (10.15), Big Sur (11...

Re: Stuck with unwanted Bold Italic Text Blocks
Since Time New Roman is possibly the most-used font and presuming that the problem occurs for every Mac user of Finale 27, why haven't there been more complaints about it? Why doesn't MakeMusic provide better information about it and how to fix it? Why haven't they fixed it after all this time? Wha...

Re: Stuck with unwanted Bold Italic Text Blocks
There's a lot of confused and confusing** information in that ZenDesk thread, and the link (which also includes Facebook tracking data) is dead. Everyone with this problem should let MM know that it needs fixed. Times is one of several fonts that for some reason, Apple has declared 'legacy': meaning...

Re: Hollywood Choirs w/Finale
It works well enough with Dorico, so it might work with Finale.
You have to type the syllables into the VST itself (and it has its own phoneme system). Then it just sounds each syllable to whatever MIDI notes come in. So playback always has to start from the beginning.

Re: Musescore the answer?
Since I'm dealing with big pieces, I've put a lot of time into customizing it for efficiency. With the aid of a third-party program called Bome's MIDI translator, I'm able to enter most everything note-wise without moving my hands from the MIDI keyboard. The lowest octave is for rhythm and a few ot...

Re: Musescore the answer?
One of my big issues with Musescore was with how it fills the measure with constantly changing rests, as you enter your notes. Thank you, but I know how many beats I’m using. I don’t need the help. And I couldn’t find a way to turn it off. Even Finale will fill the bar with the correct rests automa...

Re: Musescore the answer?
I have pain stakingly gone through most of my scores from the beginning of time and updated them to 27.3. I have made a PDF of each. I have made an XML of each one which brings me to this thread. I have always kept a PDF of every completed score in Finale. There have been a variety of issues over t...

Re: last breath
I tend to disagree. Finale, as is, runs pretty darn well for me and what I do. I think I am pretty typical in the way most folks use it. "It can't be like that for others because it's not like that for me" is a logical fallacy, at best. People have been complaining for decades about bugs in core Fi...

Re: last breath
On top of the general lack of support, there is the question of what and when the next release will be. There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern recently, but it's been 199 days since 27.3 was released. If they follow v26, then 3 releases is it. If MM are going for a 2-year release strategy, Final...

Make sure that the Speedy Entry menu is configured to use the MIDI device!
If it's working in Cubase, then it's certainly just a Finale settings issue.

Re: importing mxl files from cpdl
Thanks. CPDL used to offer finale and Sibelius files but they now changed to mxl which is troublesome to say the least! It's up to the person who uploads their editions what formats they choose to supply. I'm not aware of any policy change. There's no reason why MusicXML files should necessarily be...

The wavy line should align with the body height of the tr symbol, so I'd suggest that No. 2 is what you should aim for.

Re: last breath
Finale 27.3 is the best Finale ever. Oh, come now. On what possible criteria do you judge that? Apart from the fact that it's simply the summation of all previous versions. It has a paltry number of bug fixes from the previous version; and as others have said, old documents still aren't handled wel...

Re: importing mxl files from cpdl
CPDL documents are often full of mistakes, in both music and layout, whatever format they are in. I swear it must take people more time and effort to produce some of the awful scores there, than it would to make a half-decent one. You will often find several formats -- usually the notation app's fil...
