Re: Measure numbering of repeats

Yes I see it in orchestra scores and some concert band scores. JR must not play in an orchestra because perhaps not common but certainly not unheard of. Sorry, I didn't mean to say that it was unheard of, ebiggs1. No, certainly not unheard of, unfortunately. But Arnstein avoided everything that cou...

Re: Measure numbering of repeats

Arnstein numbered straight through, because it avoids complication. But the other system is standard practice in current Urtext and scholarly editions. Often letters are appended to the alternate numbers so 160 becomes 160a etc. I think the rationale is that in many cases, the second ending just rep...

What if a repeat is written out in one or some part and others have a 1st and 2nd ending?
Hopefully, that would never happen. One of the big no-nos for A. Arnstein. He didn't tolerate first and second endings in one part that were not in all.

Re: Contra Bass or Double Bass?

I like to use Contrabass, abbreviated as Cb. This is consistent with Violoncello, abbreviated as Vc, Viola as Va, and Violin I and Violin II, abbreviated as Vn I and Vn II. Nothing OCD there. I think that system is often used. Arnold Arnstein took the opposite approach and wanted each of the instru...

Re: Manual spacing

Just in case the following would be helpful: When two notes or more are too close together, such as the situation in the OP, I open the beat chart in the measure tool and drag the appropriate beat square right to widen the gap with the shift key down , which moves all the notes from this beat on to ...

Re: articulation markings

Tradition also plays an important part in making decisions concerning music notation. Some things are "always done" in a certain way, so musicians come to expect to see them that way. That might explain some of the apparent discrepancies in the information that you have received here. Questions like...

Re: articulation markings

Great questions. Tales of a Grandmother no. 4: A staccato dot is actually a notational convenience to eliminate a lot of unneeded rests and means: play the note at half its normal value. (Unfortunately, the staccato dot is misinterpreted by many pianists to mean: play the note as short as possible.)...

Re: Stuck with unwanted Bold Italic Text Blocks

Glad that fixed the problem, Mel-o-drama. But questions remain. Since Time New Roman is possibly the most-used font and presuming that the problem occurs for every Mac user of Finale 27, why haven't there been more complaints about it? Why doesn't MakeMusic provide better information about it and ho...

Re: Stuck with unwanted Bold Italic Text Blocks

This problem occurred to me also after I installed Finale 27 and was solved midway down the following thread: https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/7957358389015-Jumbled-up-Fonts-in-Finale-27 David Cusick suggested installing the following Times font: https://www.freebestfonts.com/t...

It may be a matter of personal taste. The fact that you asked the question may mean that you would really prefer it the other way around. I guess I am OK either way.

Re: Seconds with accidentals

Elaine Gould says that the accidentals "may" be reversed in this case so that both accidentals are closer to the notes they pertain to. (p. 91)

The 16th rest looks too low to me.

I'd say it was a very bad issue. You might post a file for members to look at. Never had such an issue, but then I am not using Finale 27.

Re: Musescore the answer?

Try a Finale XML export to Dorico import XML. I did this on a recent not-terribly-complicated duet I just completed, and it is acceptable, really. I could move forward with it if that were all I had. Might be a good idea to systematically create music XML files along with the final MUSXs, PDFs and ...

Re: Musescore the answer?

Actually, Dorico imports XML files made in Finale very well. It even imports the fingering correctly and ports it into the correct tool in Dorico. I rely heavily on scanning and have been impressed by that aspect while doing a current trial of Dorico 5. I think that users without special requirement...

Re: fingering slur

You can use one of the elision symbols to be found in the Engraver Font. They look like little slurs. Then you position it by hand over or under the numbers. Or you can use an actual beat-attached slur. This becomes necessary when the numbers get further apart.

Re: Text size and fonts..make your own default?

Finale can't even do perfect justification and requires special keystrokes for curly quotes, so I doubt it can do anything more subtle. Maybe I am wrong. In any case, if the text becomes at all complex, I take the project into InDesign or Affinity Publisher.

The wavy line seems a little close to the tr in no. 2 and a little far in no. 3. Half way between is what I see in a Weiner Urtext I just checked.

It is standard practice to have just a little airspace between interlocked voices so the notes are not actually touching. This is something that Finale should be doing automatically, but doesn't.

Re: last breath

I can't use Finale 27 for old files because so many of the articulations and expressions are mispositioned and have to be readjusted, as mentioned by dtoub, and I can't use it for new files because tuplet adjustments don't work in page view and graphics seem to be iffy. And who knows what other prob...
