There is a Lua script, Expression Add Opaque Background. This will "add an opaque background to a single-staff expression in the currently selected region." With the Selection tool, double click on the lyric. This also puts you in the correct verse and layer.

Wasn’t this always the complaint about Sibelius? It’s interesting that since Dorico arrived, we see a lot fewer “but Sibelius does it this way…” posts.

It gives you these options for individual lyrics selected in the score, or groups of lyrics (or an entire verse) in the lyrics window.

I believe it says so in Document Options > Fonts > Lyrics

I make “after the fact” lyric changes this way:
Select All in the Lyrics window
Go to the Text menu (which is there, even though you're in the lyrics tool) and choose Character Settings…
Make your changes in the next window, OK

And besides that, guys only know the colors they had in their crayons as a kid. Not being from an especially rich family, I only had the Crayola 8 color box. So those are the only colors I know!
