Scribus, InkScape, GIMP – In my opinion very good alternatives.

I think that you do everything correctly. The printer will stop if anything is wrong.

Save as a new file(name) is the best solution.Or take a screenshot. Or export page. Or work in a scroll view and place your ideas on the end of the file, measure 1000.

Finale can mess up all this, particularly when you have parts that break the system at different places than the score.
Than you get this ugly tiny "rest" of the hairpin in the next system.

So I never use that way, but just finish precisely on the barline, or just before.

It works absolutely great under Win 10. All saved (or autosaved) documents are automatically backed up. A very good tool if something goes wrong, or you want to use a version that you cannot undo.
