Re: Default Show/Hide for Expressions

Hi Michael,

I can figure out how to do that for items like Tempo Markings. I'm currently entering these expressions as technique text because they belong to the staff, not the system.

How can I do this for technique text?

Default Show/Hide for Expressions

For my orchestra scores, I like to often have two parts on the same line (e.g. flute 1/2) in the score. I also like to split this single staff into two parts using Manage Parts > Specify Voicing. This means, though, that in the score I need to input expressions like "1.", "2.", "a2", etc. so the con...

Re: Slu issue

I would not use either of those slurs. Definitely using two slurs in that situation is more information that what you would need. I would slur from the first note to the end of the tied note.

Re: Slu issue

For choral music, I wouldn't be surprised if the double slur is to show a melisma in both voices. I'm not terribly versed in choral music, but that would make sense to me. My personal opinion is to have as little ink as possible on the page. Everything on the page is something that a player/conducto...

Re: I just lost hours of work!

Personally, I have a couple automatic backups happening to make sure that I don't lose a ton of work. I have one service that automatically backs up to the cloud continuously, another that automatically backups to the cloud every day, and an external hard drive that I backup to each week. It may be ...

Re: Staff spacing in orchestral scores

Hi Jeffery, To be honest, I'm not 100% sure why it isn't working. I'm currently running Finale 25.5 (64 bit) on a Mac. Maybe it's because of that? I checked the docs and that shouldn't be a problem, though I don't have a Windows computer to test it on. It shouldn't be that you have some staves hidde...

Re: Staff spacing in orchestral scores

Hi Jeffery, So you will need to download JW Lua to use this script. It is a third-party plugin. You can follow this link: http://finaletips.nu/index.php/download/category/28-beta-version?download=233:jw-lua-beta-v0-54-for-64-bit-windows To install the plug-in: Find out where your plug-ins folder is ...

Re: Staff spacing in orchestral scores

Hi Jeffrey, A couple of years ago I was running into the same problem. So I wrote a JW Lua script to take care of it. You can find it here: https://nickmazuk.com/Resources/JWLua#setsystemtopageheight Here's what it does: Resizes systems to take up full height of page Checks if there is more than one...

Also, if they are metatools I'm going to be using for every document I create, I like to edit my document styles. That way the metatools are there by default.

Re: Maybe silly question

As a player, I would try to play them both the same way unless they are marked different (i.e. one is "esp." while the other is "marc."). If there is little rehearsal time, however, I would appreciate the reminder because I might not get the time to really dig into the piece.

Hope this helps,

Re: OT: score size

Most music stands I've used are 12.5 inches tall. This is the height of the normal Manhasset stands. And almost every other stand I've used is about that height. Given that, I would say 14 inches is probably too tall for the parts. Conductors are often used to larger size scores and could potentiall...

Re: Breaking Through Bar Lines

Hi Zevy, Welcome to the forum! Here's one way to achieve the effect that I think you're going for. Assuming that the "Sempre Staccato" is an expression, go to the expressions tool and edit the expression. On the Main tab, make the enclosure shape a rectangle. Hit edit. Check the "Opaque" box and set...

Because of this post, I decided to play around with the PDFs via the graphics tool. I've always used the print dialogue. Do you know how to export the score and all the parts at the same time with the graphics tool?

Here are two options other than TG Tools that will allow you to define the shortcuts on Windows:
FinaleScript would be easier, but there will be a slight delay every time you use the keyboard shortcut.

Re: entering triplets

Hi Hal, What's worked for me in the past with similar situations is to go to the Simple Entry Options and deselect "Check for Extra Notes". Then input your last triplet. Then reselect "Check for Extra Notes". The reason why I've had to do this in the past is that triplets are 1/3 the value of beat. ...

For you on a Mac, your FinaleScript files are going to in (unless you changed the default install location): Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Makemusic > Finale > FinaleScript There you will see even more folders with the same structure as you get in the FinaleScript tool. Like motet s...

Re: Measure Numbers Below Measure Distance

I'm not worried about the parts. I'm more concerned about the actual score and I am not messing with the part measure numbers at all. I guess you could say that I'm looking for "fixed positioning" in the same way that fonts can have "fixed size". And if that isn't a thing, some way to use JW Lua to ...

Measure Numbers Below Measure Distance

Hi There, I like having measure numbers below every measure in the score to speed up the rehearsal process. I'm trying to find a way to make them appear the same distance below the system no matter how large score is. For instance, they should always be 1 inch below the score (I just picked a number...

Hi There, Along this same thread, I recently wrote a Python script that would merge the score and parts into a single file in score order (it reads the score to figure out what the specific score order is). Re: percussion layers

Hi There, What you are looking for is actually two different functionalities. For the percussion notes, as Zuill pointed out, they don't transpose the same way that ordinary notes do and hence 6/7 won't work. Instead, use the Transpose Percussion tool (Utilities > Transpose Percussion). For the othe...
