There's an option (under Program Options) to show Tools on the tool bar. That can be accessed with alt-T, and will show a list of tools which can be selected from the keyboard. I forget how to program Function keys to switch tools, but that's another possibility. And isn't there a TG Tools method of...

Not a keyboard command, but a direct route: You can have the "show active layer" button permanently appear among the tools on the top of the screen. Window / Toolbars / Customize Toolbars / View Menu Toolbar , and then Window / Toolbars / View Toolbar.

I agree with Peter, but that's because when I was learning the program, Simple was massively slow, requiring a tremendous amount of mouse-clicking all over the place. Now that it has been revamped so that it's more keyboard-dependent, many people find that entry method more to their liking. It's pre...

You're sure it's a slur and not a tie? You don't say which flavor of Finale you're running, but if you have the Selection tool, double-click on the "slur" and it will become active.

Quickest way to do it: In Speedy, enter the final eighth-note chord as a quarter note. Dialogue box will give you the option to "move extra notes to next measure." Result: eighth-note chord tied to eighth-note chord, no accidental showing in second measure, playback accurate. There are lots of other...

If you don't like layers, maybe you should go to a three-staff system and put the melody on its own line?

Not sure if anything will happen, but you might try entering them as 128ths and then making them 50% or 25% of their value.

On many laptops, the number pad overlays the keyboard. Look for it below 7-8-9 (U-I-O should have 4-5-6, etc.). This would be activated by a Pad Lock function. Alternatively, Radio Shack sells a USB number pad for not much.

The empty measures have to be truly empty. If you replaced the default rests with actual rests, you need to undo that. (99% of the time, that's the problem. If not this time, we'll need more information.)

I'm not exactly sure what wall you're running into (there are so many!), but I suspect that at least part of your problem will be solved when you read up on Optimization in the manual. With Finale products, it's not so much adding staffs where you need them as it is making them go away where you *do...

Switch to layer 2 and turn on "show active layer only." (I keep a button for it on my toolbar rather than using the Edit menu.)

You make a very good point. Making it here, though, is useless. AFAIK, nobody from MakeMusic reads this board. Better to post these thoughts over on their forum. Even better, contact MM directly.

Spectacular screen name, by the way.

Those are not baselines. They're called word extensions, and they are automatically placed when you have syllables attached to tied notes (among other times). You can turn the option off. Read up on this in the Lyrics chapter of the manual.

You need to have all the staffs present throughout the piece, but then make them go away when you don't need the extras (most of the time). Read up on optimization in the manual.

If Songwriter parallels Finale, you want to use the Text tool (looks like a letter A) to change your title -- you have to be in Page view to do it. And you should be able to add a staff using the Staff tool (treble clef symbol) -- Scroll view is better here.

Did you uninstall Finale 2001 after you installed 2006? If so, your font files need to be reinstalled. No need to reinstall all of 2006; just custom-install the fonts. (And reboot.)
