Re: Piano L and R hands

This sort of thing needs never-ending post-entry adjustment with the Special Tools Note Position and Beam Angle tools (see screenshot). One problem seems to be that Finale is still spacing the cross-stave notes horizontally as though they are still all on one stave. I don't suppose I've got this one...

Re: Ties between enharmonically altered notes

If there's a key change involved, though, hanging on to the old pitch too long might not look good. There is what seems to me to be a notationally slightly awkward example of this in the vocal score of Luonnotar by Sibelius. The key signature changes from F sharp minor to B flat minor, but the voic...

Re: Help needed: how to ask finale to reassess and remove unnecessary accidentals

If you've got the full (ie extra paid for) version of TGTools, Music > Accidentals > Check Accidentals may do what you want.

Re: O/T accent notation question

Ah yes the Scarpia chords - I suppose there are strings at work too, although we (the trombones) try to make sure they're not heard! (Not really, but we don't hold back.) Anyway, a perfect example of the same accent marking across woodwind, brass and strings all to the same purpose: very loud, stron...

Agreed.

On the trombone I was always expected to play ^ more strongly and heavily (very) than > and I have always understood these accents in this way as a composer whatever the instrument.

I suspect this particular death notice may be a trifle premature, although nothing is immortal.

Re: dead horse

What I find even more frustrating than Finale's malaise is that none of these GUI products gives the user complete control over all elements of music engraving. This after so many years of software development. But Finale has fewer show-stoppers than the others and they can be worked around. So I s...

Re: tuplet dynamics resolved

I don't know why you can't enter the hairpin as I can enter either sort of hairpin anywhere in your file with ease.

To tilt the hairpin, right click on its main handle, untick ‘Make Horizontal’ then drag its end handle and reposition as you wish.

Re: tuplet dynamic

That more or less fits with the translation of sforzando as ‘forcing’. Maybe try writing the Italian word out in full under the roulade ? Could that serve? I take the view that sf is as much an articulation as a dynamic, and as such usually applies to a single note. Anyway, I do now understand what ...

Re: tuplet dynamic

My earlier post in this thread was too convoluted. However, I have a simple question.

What is meant by a sforzando that applies to all the notes of a piano roulade?

In our several ways we all seem to be asking this question. It would be interesting to know the answer.

Re: Percussion notation question

Gould (p 283) ‘recommends’ stems up but describes stems down as ‘acceptable’.

FWIW I usually notate stems up, with down stems for special techniques (eg striking an SD on the shell) &c.

Re: Things not staying in place.

It could be Automatic Music Spacing which is rather irritatingly a programme rather than a document setting. I'll try that if/when I have to do more of this, but I have just managed to export it all as PDFs (again, I had some parts printed for proofing etc, which is why I've been making further chan...

Things not staying in place.

I've been spending more time than I expected (or wanted) on a modest set of parts for just six instruments. The piece lasts 70 mins and is 1317 bars long, but it is for the very modest forces of six instrumentalists plus two principal singers (a mother & daughter in their stage characters) and a two...

Re: PDF printing oddity with hard space

A small up-date, not yet put to trial: Having concluded that the problem was probably specific to the Finale Lyrics font, I've used Text Search and Replace to find the total of nine instances in the files that make up the PDF where I have used hard (or non-breaking) space followed by hard hyphen (or...

Re: PDF printing oddity with hard space

This is the relevant bit of the libretto. The hard hyphen is in effect an m-dash (which is needed) and, unless I'm missing something, a non-hard space would jump me to the next note.

PDF printing oddity with hard space

This may be of interest. How it should have come back from the printer and (shown with the red arrows) how it did. Everything else in the 247 page 1,317 bar score, including a little non-standard notation, seems to have come back as it should, but the hard space followed by hard hyphen appeared with...

Position of accidental

I think there was a recent thread about this, but I can't seem to find it.

Question: am I right in thinking that Finale is wrong to place the natural so far from the lower B in the cue and that I am right to move it closer? (First as placed by Finale, second as adjusted by me.)

Re: double trill question

If it were me, I'd probably use either or both according to which worked best for space et al in each context. As far as I know there's no rule. In such notationally demanding music, I don't think there's any need to be consistent through a piece as long as what is meant is clear on each occasion. I...

For flipping I've been selecting the handle and keying ‘F’. However, I'll try choosing the direction via the right click menu next time. Since the score I've been using is a unique version specifically for the parts, there's been no particular disadvantage in my flipping in the score first, other th...

Linked part fliped slur oddity

Is this normal behaviour? I've been preparing parts for a 1,317 bar file. When I flip a slur in a linked part it flips back at some later stage unless I also flip it in the score. This applies both to the main part and to any cues added. Another very strange, and for a while rather alarming, strange...
