Re: Dorico for iPad released

… … Beethoven had his sketchbook; today's composer has his iPad. I suspect a small sketchbook is tougher and more portable than an iPad, plus it doesn't need to be kept charged. Maybe it's just my age (80), but I wouldn't want to rely on technology for spur of the moment sketches. Mind you, I suppo...

Along the top menu bar, it's visble in your screenshot to the right, first is ‘Finder’, then is ‘File’ &c. ‘Go’ is number 5 counting from the left.

Re: Cues for single line stave part

Could you turn the single line into a five-line staff with a staff style where you want a cue? That probably would have been the simpler (and more orthodox) way of going about it. I did look at that briefly, but then I thought I'd try what I've now done. If I have time, I may do a second version of...

Re: Cues for single line stave part

Have I been making this too complicated? For example, is there an automatic setting one can apply so that the vertical position of the numbers on multimeasure rests of single-line stave parts is different from those of five-line stave ones in the same set of linked parts? Better still, can one apply...

Cues for single line stave part

I'm currently doing the single line stave percussion part for a theatrical piece of mine. Possibly unwisely (or not) I'm providing the cues on a separate five-line, reduced-size cue-stave which is 'cut' when not in use. This has been a bit more fiddly that I expected, as can perhaps be seen from the...

This may not apply to you, but when I move files to a new subfolder in Box or Dropbox on one computer while they are open on another (but still using Box etc), I get identical messages. If I close and reopen the files on the second computer, all returns to being as it should be. I may be wrong, but ...

Heavens! Completely OT, but this illustrates how different one's perceptions can be. It reached 24ºC (75ºF) here today which is abnormally hot for us and it made me feel a bit uncomfortable. (Air conditioning is unknown in these parts.)

Re: Problem with Finale 27

I don't know if this is related, but with Box Sync which I think operates much the same way as Dropbox I've once or twice had a somewhat similar (not identical, but then I'm on Mac) message if I've had a Finale 26 file open on two computers at the same time in their desktop Box folders. I'm not sure...

Un po' ubriaco Somewhat drunk? I think that might need further explanation in another language, preferably the language of the performers, as Michel suggests (depending on context etc etc). Unless you are a fluent Italian speaker, idiomatic Italian and musical Italian are not always quite the same....

I'm far from expert on the subject of fonts, but I suspect the more compatible the various professional music typesetting softwares are as far as such things are concerned the better for all users in the long run.

Re: Mac: programming key shortcuts, other command line hacks.

If you're moving up to Finale 27, you'll want to transfer any keyboard shortcuts that you've added and got used to. Yes indeed, and thank you very much for your suggestions in this respect. One other useful Terminal command for Finale: if you generally use Dark Mode, but don't want Finale to, then ...

… … … Peter, could that be played as a double stop, or is it one or the other? It can be played as double stops by a good player. At a glance that's how I interpret it. One quite often sees that kind of thing in solo parts. Indeed I've written exactly that way for optional double stopped lower octa...

Can a smart line span system and page breaks? Yes. I regularly use a zero thickness smart line with a text beginning such as SD or BD etc to show what percussion instrument is in use. I drag it in scroll view for as far as necessary and then the text shows at the beginning of the stave for each sys...

Re: Cannot change 6/8 signature to 3/4

If you want to change 6/8 to 3/4, I am imagining each 6/8 will be 2 bars of 3/4, so the values will have to double as well. Zuill I don't think so. The dotted half notes in the example shown will remain the same and are the same values in a measure of 6/8 or 3/4. Correct. A piece of mine from 2012 ...

If the spacing between systems 1 & 2 is exactly as you want, try this. Page Layout, select the top left handle for system 2, then in the menu choose Systems > Edit System Margins. Since you've selected system 2, the dialogue should say Change from System 2 Thru 2. Make the second figure 12 and then ...

Re: Timer

One oddity I've noticed, which may be Mac specific, is that if screen save comes on, however briefly, during playback the counter shows a figure which is wildly inaccurate. I find silently conducting to myself from the score and then adding a little (the % added varying according to the nature of th...

Select all in the Selection tool, then go to Utilties/Check notation/Check elapsed time. Supposed to work, anyway (I don't use it). I think that in the Selection Tool after selecting all (or the passage you want to time) all you need to do is to key ‘3’ (on a Mac anyway). With either method Finale ...

I don't know its official function, but I am glad of it as it prevents the frame from jumping automatically to the next bar after entering notes to the full value of the bar one is in. Could this actually be its purpose? Or is that something more arcane?

… (Most professional players now have an F attachment that extends the range to include all those notes except the B-natural.) On a Mac the layers retain their colours in the Speedy frame. The one you're working on is bold, any others are fainter but still in their assigned colours.

On the Mac, Switch does a good job at converting any audio format to any other audio format (even in batches and different mp3 qualities). FWIW I obtained Switch about a year ago, when the only way I could buy a particular recording of some Schumann songs was as a download, as there was no CD avail...
