Re: Numberpad issue
It sounds like the numpad is producing the same results as when you press the numbers on the main keyboard. I don't know whether that's an issue with the way the numpad works, or how the OS/Finale handles your numpad.

Re: Thank you Finale
I concur. It's very easy to complain about things that don't work, because our expectations are so high, that we forget about why we use Finale. For me, it's still the fastest and most precise way of getting notation on the page.

Re: iMac or MBPro?
I have been using Finale 2014.5 on a MBPro Retina for the last couple of weeks on a large project. The MBPro is running Sierra. I believe that 2014.5 is not recommended to run on Sierra (or rather that Sierra is not recommended for using 2014.5). There may well be a variety of odd little quirks. I'...

Re: allowing rhythmic values not to add up
The Note Entry tools have not changed between 2012 and 25.5. Simple or Speedy Entry. Both have menu options to Check for Extra Notes, or not. For early music, which often lacks bar lines... Early music typesetting wants the whole note to *stay* as a whole note. " In some styles of early music editio...

Re: inconsistent hairpin ends
As motet points out, the fact that the lines have flat ends affects how they appear when they join. Finale can't do 'mitres', which specify the kind of join, regardless. Not so much a bug, as a lack of feature. However, you may find that the recent feature of setting open widths (surely heights?) fo...

Re: Quickly changing fonts
You can change the Default Music Font under the Documents menu. You can load in a Library of options and settings that suit a different font.
That will get you most of the way. There may still be some things that need manually adjusting. Chord suffixes are not without difficulty.

If you want to get a feeling of what different instrumentations will sound like, the Garritan sounds will work pretty well.

Re: Finale and Automation
Finale comes with FinaleScript, but this is little more than a 'macro' tool that sequences commands. There's no flow control or logic. So by the time you had typed in everything you wanted to do, you could have just ... done it. It's useful for saving and recalling sequences of commands or batch pro...

Re: What computer specs would be perfect for Finale?
Conclusion: updating a 9 year old laptop increases Finale's processing speed significantly. So, faster computers are faster! I've certainly noticed a performance improvement updating from a 2012 Mac to a 2014 Mac. Seriously, it might be useful to have some way in which anyone can benchmark th...

To avoid losing elements like lyrics, articulations, etc when you Retranscribe:zuill wrote:Retranscribe loses some markings (articulations and maybe expressions). A bit of redo there.
1. Copy the entire passage.
2. Retranscribe.
3. Paste back the passage, using the Edit Filter to de-select Notes and Rests.

Re: What computer specs would be perfect for Finale?
Firstly, I'll check with MM whether those specs are up-to-date. As said, I use Finale on my Retina display with absolutely no problems. I also use it on my Mac Mini with a 27" Thunderbolt Display (2560 x 1440), and haven't seen any (related) problems in the last six years! If those specs were true, ...

Re: getting final layout right
Briefly: Finale spaces the music according to the values in the Music Spacing options. A quarter note has a 'reference' width, which is the distance assigned after it, and all other notes have a proportional value of that distance following them. (E.g. half note is 1.6 times the distance, or whateve...

Why? I always lock the systems.lynndavidnewton wrote:(Yes, system locks are off.)
9+9+8+8+9+2 = 45 over 6 systems. So 7.5 (!) each.
Lock the systems, then 'knock' a measure or two over on to the next system using the down arrow.

Re: 4K resolution issues
There have been several complaints about this on the Mac side with people using Retina or other high-resolution screens. Apparently Finale isn't able to deal with this well yet. My 2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro works beautifully with Finale. Compared to my 2012 Mini on a Thunderbolt Display, the disp...

Re: em dash missing?
Bear in mind that Finale's Edit Preference "Substitute Font for Missing Unicode Characters" may affect things. In short, if the font you're using doesn't contain the char you want, Finale will change the char to something that is in the font. E.g., if you don't have š , then it will just do s . The ...

I've read all I can find out, but am still wondering what the paper quality would be like for the printed scores/parts. Yes, November is a third-party purchase font. It's highly recommended, both for 'traditional' engraving symbols, and for historical symbols and forms. http://www.klemm-music.de/notation/november2/en/index.php There are other third-party music fonts which may suit your work. https://www.musictypefoun...

Re: double whole note
If you're writing lots of music with breves, I would avoid using Maestro. The standard breve's 'sidelines' are far too tall (it looks like a TIE Fighter!), and the rectangular version is ... very rectangular. Engraver is better; November better still. Also, if you're doing an organ part with a chord...

The Bach font actually has standard alphanumerics (resembling Times New Roman) for the ASCII range. The idea being that you can write text and music symbols in the same font without switching. Screen Shot 3.png Most of the other symbols are Unicode chars that have no keypresses. You have to use Appl...

By 'cautionary', do you mean 'courtesy' clefs and time sigs at the end of a system, warning that they are going to change? Because those are separate settings, in Doc Opts > Clefs and Time Sigs respectively. Otherwise, if you just want the current time sig to appear in a given measure, you can use M...

If you're doing 6 pages of text matter before the music, I would (and indeed do) create them in an app that is capable of better text layout than Finale. Then make PDFs of the preface and the music, and combine them together.

Re: Printing not black, more like 70% grayscale
I've done a bit of sleuthing, and here's something you may like to try: 1. In System Prefs > Printers, create a new Print queue for your printer. Add "Finale" to the name. When you print from Finale, this is the printer you will select. 2. Open ColorSync Utility. Click on the 'Devices' tab. 3. Selec...
