Re: Layer 2 doesn't align with layer 1 after pasting

I answered this in the 'other' forum: There are keyboard strokes for many of Finale's functions and most of us have created others via the OS and/or a macro program. The function being referred to here is Utilities/Music Spacing/Apply Note Spacing to Current Part/Score. If you look there, you'll see...

Re: Layer 2 doesn't align with layer 1 after pasting

This is actually a shortcoming in Finale. Notes a second apart are offset correctly, but if Manual Positioning is set to Incorporate or Ignore, transposing the offset notes won't reposition them properly. As Motet said, setting MP to Clear will take care of the problem but it will also undo any manu...

Well said!
Come on, Michel. That’s hardly reasonable, considering what Dorico’s already capable of and how intelligently its features have been implemented. Hardly comparable to a car radio!

Re: EPS files

This is perhaps skirting the issue but I used to do exactly the same thing: send endless single-page EPS files to publishers. At the time (I’m talking about many years ago), many publishers wouldn’t accept multi-page documents. In the meantime, multi-page PDFs are no longer a problem and many publis...

Re: Slightly OT: Automating F14/14.5 w Quickeys - best way?

FWIW, I was an avid QuicKeys user for many years, even long after support had been discontinued, which speaks for how cleverly and 'tidily' it was programmed. A couple of years ago I finally made the transition to Keyboard Maestro, an excellent program, although with a different concept. They appare...

Re: Disappearing Cursor

I have this problem regularly but in my case it's not a matter of the cursor disappearing but more that the cursor has become a caret, or a thin line, (one can get a similar problem in word processors) and, on a busy screen full of music, it becomes very difficult to see. The MacOS has a solution fo...

Although beware of doing that for too many updates. Last year I redid most of my templates because my old ones were showing anomalies.

Re: Correcting articulation positions

Try selecting Utilities/Stem Direction/Use Default Direction and then removing the manual adjustments to the articulations. Perhaps the stem direction got frozen in, for Finale, a non-default setting during the xml translation, causing the stem-side placement. Otherwise, try double-clicking one of t...

Just make sure that you have the option to show locked systems and page breaks turned on. Then you don’t need to remember where you put them.

Re: Moving Systems to an Inserted Blank Page

Inserted blank pages are not intended for that purpose. They're generally used for blank pages, title pages, etc. As far as the music is concerned, Finale ignores them. If you want to decrease the density of the layout, you shouldn't add pages manually but instead let Finale do it. There are several...

Singers who can read notes well are still the exception and singers who can hardly read at all are not at all uncommon. When I have to coach them, I can oft...

Re: Finale won't open file

P.S. Sibelius has its headaches, too. Check out Dorico. In most regards it has already left Finale (and Sibelius) far behind and those differences are only getting greater as the Dorico team is working quickly, diligently and intelligently on new features as well as refining the old ones. Sorry MM, ...

Re: Finale won't open file

I know this is really annoying and it's indeed inexcusable. One small consolation: something I've invariably noticed when this happens to me is that redoing lost work always takes a fraction of the time it took the first time around.

Re: Expressions in multimeasure rests

I don't know of a really correct way of doing this, either, but the following works. If it's just a matter of having 'attacca' appear at the end of a MM rest, you should attach it to the first measure of the MM rest. Assuming that you've set the expression to be right-justified and aligned to the ri...

Re: Baroque non-standard key signatures

That’s right. Igor is the violinist, Felicity Goodwin (my wife) is the organist and I played harpsichord. BTW, tuning keyboard instruments for those works really requires some creative manipulation!

Yes, I believe they were produced by Brilliant Classics. I'm afraid I don't have much more info than that. We decided to use harpsichord and organ (often simultaneously) for the continuo.

Re: Baroque non-standard key signatures

Is it Biber? Make sure you include the incipit with the string tuning (and omit the editor's continuo realisation!). With scordatura, there's no way you're going to get proper playback in Finale anyway because the notes are actually 'fingering notation', so you might as well make an expression (as M...

Re: grace note / slur question

I agree. I would slur the two [16th] grace notes (without a dash) to the first of the 'real' notes and just make sure the slur ends don't coincide. The only time I've avoided slurring grace notes is in a case like the following, which I feel gives too much clutter and would technically put the slur ...

Re: New upgrade to Finale.

Wouldn't surprise me if MM were working on a intelligent collision avoidance. Finale is the last major notation program not to have such a feature; Sibelius has its magnetic layout and Dorico already does this very well by default. I can also imagine their trying to implement an intelligent way of s...

Re: Adjusting piano pedal marks with grace notes

Do you want this for playback? If so, you'll probably want the grace notes included in the pedalling which is more difficult since they're before the beat. In that case, you could conceivably place the pedal mark at the end of the previous measure and slide it to the first beat of the next, while pr...
